How to Compare Website Screenshots Before and After a CSS Refactor

Capture the same pages and states before and after a CSS refactor, control rendering conditions, and review screenshot diffs before approving new baselines.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Save a screenshot of the original page, capture the refactored page under the same conditions, and compare the images at matching routes, viewport sizes, and interface states. Treat the diff as a way to find visual changes—not as a verdict: review each change to distinguish an intended design update from a regression or rendering noise.

Build a comparison that can reveal real regressions

Choose representative pages and states

List the routes most likely to be affected by the CSS changes, then include the states that exercise those styles: for example, navigation open and closed, a form with validation messages, or a component at narrow and wide widths. Capture the original implementation before editing the CSS. That image is the baseline against which the refactored version will be reviewed.

Use the same route, content, and interaction state in both captures. A page screenshot can show broad layout changes; a screenshot of a component can make a focused review easier when the refactor targets a particular element.

Match the rendering conditions

Keep the browser engine and version, operating system, viewport dimensions, device scale factor, fonts, test data, and page state consistent wherever possible. Wait until the page has settled before capturing it. Disable or control animations and other time-dependent or unstable content when practical, so a changing banner, clock, or feed does not obscure the CSS changes you want to assess.

These are practical controls, not a guarantee of pixel-identical output across machines. Playwright’s visual comparison guidance warns that operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can all affect rendering. Its PageAssertions API documents the screenshot assertion options.

Capture and review in a controlled sequence

  1. Capture and preserve the original page or element screenshot before the CSS refactor.
  2. After the refactor, run the same route, state, viewport, and browser setup, and capture the corresponding screenshot.
  3. Inspect the baseline, current screenshot, and diff together. Check page-level captures for overall layout and targeted element captures for components affected by the change.
  4. Classify each visible difference as intended, an unintended regression, or capture noise. If a change is unclear, inspect the relevant DOM or computed styles.
  5. Approve and commit an updated baseline only after review confirms the visual change is intentional. Do not replace a baseline automatically just because a comparison failed.

Use Playwright for repeatable screenshot checks

If the project already runs Playwright tests, its screenshot assertion is a direct way to compare a page or element with a stored reference. Playwright Test documentation says: “Playwright Test includes the ability to produce and visually compare screenshots using await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot().” On an initial run, the test runner generates reference screenshots; later runs compare captures against them. Keep the environment consistent between runs to make the comparison meaningful.

Page-level assertion

In a Playwright Test file, a basic page assertion looks like this:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('home page visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('http://localhost:3000');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});

Run the project’s Playwright tests in the same browser and environment for baseline creation and subsequent comparison. The first run creates the reference image; review and keep that reference with the project’s test artifacts or source control according to the team’s workflow.

Element-level assertion

For a component-focused check, target the locator instead of the whole page:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('header visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('http://localhost:3000');
  await expect(page.locator('header')).toHaveScreenshot();
});

Use a stable selector that identifies the component consistently. Ensure the component is in the intended interaction state before asserting its screenshot.

Set tolerances deliberately

Playwright provides maxDiffPixels, maxDiffPixelRatio, and a per-pixel threshold to configure how screenshot differences are assessed. These settings address different aspects of comparison, and the right values depend on the project and its rendering stability. There is no universal threshold to copy: first stabilize fonts, browser setup, animations, and data; then select tolerances that fit the visual changes the team needs to catch. A permissive setting can hide a real regression.

Choose a workflow that fits the review

Playwright Test: local baselines in an existing test stack

Use Playwright Test when browser tests already run in the project and you want page- or element-level assertions against stored screenshots. The comparison lives alongside automated tests, while baseline changes remain subject to your team’s review process.

Chromatic: hosted visual review

Chromatic documents hosted snapshots, baseline pixel diffs, and a diff inspector with side-by-side and overlay views. Its documentation also describes using existing Playwright tests to generate visual snapshots. This can suit teams that need centralized visual review or collaboration. Manual comparison: a small one-off check

For a one-time comparison, capture both images at identical dimensions and align them before using an overlay or image diff. Manual review is simple, but it does not itself provide repeatable test coverage or baseline management.

Compare the operational fit

  • Local or hosted: decide whether screenshots and review should stay within the existing browser-test workflow or use a hosted collaboration flow.
  • Capture scope: determine whether you need full-page coverage, focused component captures, or both.
  • Baselines: decide where reference images live and who approves changes to them.
  • Review: consider whether side-by-side or overlay inspection and shared review are important to the team.
  • Cost: check current vendor plans and limits directly before choosing. Current prices and plan limits are not stated in the cited workflow documentation.

Interpret diffs without hiding CSS regressions

A pixel difference only establishes that the images differ. It does not tell you whether the change is wrong. A changed margin may be the intended result of the refactor; a shifted navigation item may be an accidental regression; a changed glyph edge may come from a font or rendering difference.

When a diff is noisy, check rendering conditions and unstable content before increasing tolerance. Confirm important differences against the page and, when needed, its DOM or computed styles. Keep visual checks alongside functional tests: matching screenshots do not establish that interactions work, that markup is semantically correct, or that the page is accessible. Add appropriate functional and accessibility testing for those questions.

Troubleshoot common comparison problems

The diff changes between runs without a CSS edit

Look for differences in browser version, operating system, headless mode, device scale factor, fonts, hardware, or other rendering settings. Also check animations, dynamic content, and unstable test data. Make the capture conditions and page state more deterministic before changing comparison tolerances.

The whole page or component appears shifted

Confirm that both images use the same viewport and device scale factor, and that the same route and interaction state were captured. Check whether content loaded or expanded differently before the screenshot.

A screenshot assertion fails on the first run

The first Playwright screenshot assertion generates the reference image rather than comparing against an established baseline. Review the generated image and retain it as the baseline only if it represents the intended appearance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A tolerance change makes failures disappear

That can mean the comparison now ignores differences you still care about. Revisit the images and address the source of noise—such as inconsistent fonts or dynamic content—before settling on a tolerance. Do not treat a passing assertion as proof that every material visual change was reviewed.

The images look the same but behavior is broken

Screenshot comparisons assess appearance, not functionality. Keep interaction and other behavior checks in the test suite, and use accessibility checks for accessibility requirements.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a clean hosted capture rather than configuring a browser for a one-off baseline, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Its API can return PNG, JPEG, or WebP, and supports full-page capture and element screenshots. A hosted capture is useful for a review image, but a CSS regression workflow still needs a saved baseline, matched capture conditions, and human review of differences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can matching screenshots prove a CSS refactor is correct?

No. They show visual similarity under the capture conditions, not semantic correctness, accessibility, or working behavior.

Should I update the baseline whenever a screenshot test fails?

No. Review the images first and update the reference only when the visual change is intentional.
