To compare which playlist keeps viewers watching longer on a 24/7 YouTube stream, compare playlist-context metrics over the same date range: average time in playlist, playlist average view duration, views per playlist start, playlist starts, and playlist estimated minutes watched. These metrics answer different questions; none is a substitute for another. Keep them separate from video-level audience-retention curves and from the live stream’s concurrent-viewer data.
Choose what “retention” means for your comparison
A playlist can attract many starts, generate substantial total watch time, or keep viewers in its sequence for longer after they start. Those are different outcomes, so first decide which one you mean by retention.

- Playlist-context continuation: how viewing proceeds after a playlist is started.
- Individual-video retention: how viewers progress through a particular video’s elapsed timeline.
- Live-stream audience pattern: how concurrent viewers change during the stream.
Use playlist metrics to compare playlists with one another. Use a video-retention report to inspect a particular video, and live-stream metrics to describe the stream’s audience pattern.

Some playlist measures, including average time in playlist, playlist starts, and views per playlist start, are documented as web-only metrics. Confirm that the metric is available in the report or API method you use.

Compare playlists over the same period
- Set the scope. Decide whether you are comparing playlist-context consumption, individual-video retention, or the stream’s audience pattern. Do not combine these into one retention score.
- Open playlist analytics. In YouTube Studio, use playlist analytics and select the playlists you want to compare. Alternatively, use an authorized YouTube Analytics API playlist report; the documented report can be filtered to one playlist.
- Align the date range. Apply the same start and end dates to each playlist. If using the API, its time-based reports use day or month granularity; keep the comparison period and granularity consistent.
- Record the metric names and values. Capture average time in playlist, playlist average view duration, views per playlist start, playlist starts, and estimated minutes watched where available. Put the date range and metric scope beside the results.
- Read duration, continuation, and scale separately. Compare average time in playlist for time after initiation; compare playlist average view duration for the average individual playback; examine views per start for continuation, and starts and estimated minutes for scale.
- Check what content is included. Playlist-context measures may include videos from other channels. Aggregated video metrics, by contrast, cover only videos owned by the channel that owns the playlist. Make that scope visible in any comparison.
Keep video retention distinct from playlist behavior
YouTube’s documented audience-retention report is video-level: it tracks elapsed positions within a video and requires a single video ID filter. It is not a single retention curve that compares multiple playlists. If you want to understand where viewers leave a specific video, use that report for the video; do not present its curve as playlist-wide retention.
YouTube Help states: “Data in YouTube Analytics is based on Video ID.” See See your live stream’s metrics for the live-stream reporting context. The report’s video-level basis is another reason to label playlist and video measures separately.

Add live-stream context without attributing it to a playlist
For the 24/7 stream itself, include average view duration and average and peak concurrent viewers as stream-level context. You can also review concurrent viewers by stream position for an individual live-streamed video; the documented position generally represents one minute.

These figures describe the live stream’s audience pattern, not playlist-attributed retention. They do not tell you which playlist viewers watched. Keep them in a separate section or column from playlist-context metrics. YouTube’s live-metrics guidance also distinguishes real-time Live Control Room figures from processed Analytics data, so identify which report and reporting window you used.

A practical comparison layout
A clear report can use one row per playlist and separate columns for the following:
- Period and scope: date range, playlist identity, and whether the metric is playlist-context or limited to channel-owned videos.
- Duration: average time in playlist and playlist average view duration.
- Continuation: views per playlist start.
- Scale: playlist starts and estimated minutes watched.
- Live context, separately: stream average and peak concurrency, plus position-level concurrency if relevant.
Do not create a single “winner” from total minutes watched alone: that total can rise with more starts. State which measure supports any conclusion, and avoid an industry retention target. YouTube’s official metric documentation defines these measures but does not establish a cross-playlist benchmark.
