Compare U.S. spot Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded products (ETPs) by what they hold, their current prospectus terms, total costs, liquidity and tracking, custody and operating risks, and— for Ether funds—whether staking is allowed. These funds offer brokerage-based exposure, not direct ownership or use of the coins, and neither Bitcoin nor Ether is interchangeable with the other.
What is the difference between a Bitcoin ETF and an Ether ETF?
A spot Bitcoin ETP holds Bitcoin; a spot Ether ETP holds Ether. They track separate cryptoassets on separate networks, so owning both is not the same as buying a broad basket of cryptocurrencies. Fund shares give you an interest in the product through a brokerage account, not direct possession of the underlying coins.

“ETF” is common shorthand, but do not assume every product has the same legal structure as a conventional registered investment company. Check the fund’s current prospectus for its structure, rights, fees, and risks.

In the United States, the SEC approved listing and trading of certain spot Bitcoin ETP shares on January 10, 2024. Its chair said the action did not approve or endorse Bitcoin and cautioned investors about crypto-related risks (SEC statement, January 10, 2024). The SEC approved rule changes permitting spot Ether ETP listings on May 23, 2024; Ether products began public trading on July 23, 2024, according to an issuer’s SEC-filed disclosure (SEC-filed disclosure).

How do I compare spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs?
Use the same comparison date and, where possible, the same trading conditions for each product. Start with the fund’s latest prospectus and filings, then compare market costs and trading behavior rather than choosing on a headline fee alone.
- Confirm the exposure and structure. Verify whether the fund holds Bitcoin or Ether, how it obtains and holds the asset, and what legal interest its shares represent.
- Read the current fee terms. Note the annual expense or sponsor fee, any waiver, the waiver’s conditions, and when it ends. Do not treat a temporary waiver as the ongoing fee.
- Estimate the cost of trading and holding. Include the bid-ask spread, any brokerage charge, and whether shares trade above or below net asset value (NAV). The annual fee alone does not capture these costs.
- Check liquidity and tracking. Compare trading volume, median bid-ask spread, market price versus NAV, benchmark methodology, and realized tracking against the underlying asset over matching periods.
- Review custody and operations. Look for named custodians, asset segregation and security arrangements, the scope and exclusions of any insurance, loss allocation, treatment of forks or network disruptions, and creation and redemption procedures.
- For Ether, verify staking terms. Find out whether the specific fund permits staking, how rewards are treated, what fees apply, and what validator, lockup, slashing, and liquidity risks are disclosed.
Which fees should I compare?
Compare the current stated annual fee and any waiver, but also account for what it may cost to trade shares and for differences between the share price and NAV. A lower annual fee does not guarantee a lower realized cost. Figures change, so compare them for the same date rather than combining quotes from different periods.

| Fund example | Disclosed fee | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| BlackRock iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) | 0.25% sponsor fee, reported on BlackRock’s product page as of September 24, 2026 | This is one Bitcoin fund’s stated fee, not a category average or recommendation. Check the current IBIT product page and prospectus for any later changes or applicable terms. |
| ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB) | 0.21% unitary sponsor fee, stated in its SEC-filed annual report published in 2026 | This is an ARKB-specific disclosure, not an industry-wide pattern. Review the SEC-filed annual report and current prospectus for the fund’s terms. |
Do Ether ETFs stake?
There is no single staking answer that should be applied to every U.S. spot Ether fund. Check the exact fund’s latest prospectus and filings for whether it can stake Ether and, if so, how rewards are allocated or retained and which fees or operational risks apply. Staking terms can affect the fund’s holdings and risks; do not infer a fund’s policy from another issuer’s product.

Liquidity and trading
Trading volume alone does not tell you the cost of entering or exiting a position. Review the bid-ask spread and compare the fund’s market price with NAV. Spreads and premiums or discounts vary over time and trading conditions, so use figures from a comparable period.
Tracking
Check which benchmark the fund follows and how closely its returns have tracked the underlying asset over the same period. Benchmark methods and fund expenses can affect the comparison. A current, like-for-like issuer dataset is not established here, so no fund ranking on liquidity or tracking is warranted.
Custody and operating disclosures
Read the actual prospectus and reports for details on who holds the cryptoasset, security arrangements, insurance limits and exclusions, and what happens if a custodian, network, or creation/redemption process is disrupted. For example, ARKB’s 2026 SEC-filed annual report identifies Coinbase Custody as its Bitcoin custodian; that disclosure applies to ARKB, not necessarily to other funds.

Creation and redemption mechanics have also changed. On July 29, 2025, the SEC announced approval of orders allowing authorized participants to create and redeem crypto ETP shares in kind, describing a change from products previously limited to in-cash transactions (SEC release, July 29, 2025). That announcement is not evidence that every fund or participant implements the process identically; consult the specific fund’s current documents.

They are not risk-free. A brokerage-listed share may simplify access to Bitcoin or Ether, but it does not remove the cryptoasset’s price volatility or the fund’s own custody, operational, trading, and structural risks. The SEC’s listing actions are not endorsements of either asset.
Best Value
Fidelity describes its FBTC and FETH among its single-asset crypto ETPs, says they are intended for investors with high risk tolerance, and warns that they are highly volatile, could become illiquid, and could result in the loss of an investor’s entire investment (Fidelity crypto fund prospectus hub). Consider whether those risks fit your circumstances; this comparison is not a buy or sell recommendation.
