To compare two website screenshots reliably, capture the same page in the same state and at the same viewport, then inspect a side-by-side view, overlay, or pixel-difference image. For repeated checks, use an automated visual test with a reviewed baseline. Keep the browser environment and page content stable, and treat any tolerance as a sensitivity setting—not proof that a change is harmless.
What makes two screenshots comparable?
You need a reference image and a new capture of the same route, at the same viewport size and relevant interaction state. Keep the browser and operating-system environment consistent where practical. Browser output can also vary with browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless versus headed mode; Playwright documents these as possible sources of visual variation (Playwright: Visual comparisons). Microsoft likewise warns that local screenshots may not match snapshots captured on a remote service when the operating systems differ (Microsoft Learn: Configure visual comparisons with Playwright Workspaces).

Before capture, wait for the page to settle. Fonts, images, animations, live data, and layout shifts can make two captures differ even when the underlying design has not changed. Playwright’s screenshot assertion workflow captures repeatedly until consecutive screenshots match, then compares the result with the expected image. This can reduce transient variation, but it does not eliminate every source of page dynamism (Playwright: Visual comparisons).
Choose the right part of the page to compare
Use a full-page capture for page-level changes
Choose full-page screenshots when the whole document is in scope—for example, to catch a missing section, a changed page length, or a shifted footer. Make sure both captures use the same full-page behavior and that lazy-loaded content has had time to appear.

Use an element capture for a focused question
If you are checking one component, compare just that region. A focused capture can keep unrelated navigation or page content from obscuring the change. Playwright supports locator screenshots, while Microsoft’s example captures a gallery and masks a date column whose values change dynamically (Playwright: Visual comparisons; Microsoft Learn: Configure visual comparisons with Playwright Workspaces).
Mask or suppress content that changes by design
Decide whether changing content is part of the visual requirement. If timestamps, rotating promotions, or live values are not relevant, mask or suppress them consistently in both captures. Playwright documents using a screenshot stylesheet through stylePath to filter volatile elements; Microsoft’s sample demonstrates masking (Playwright: Visual comparisons; Microsoft Learn: Configure visual comparisons with Playwright Workspaces).

Compare two images manually
- Align the files. Confirm the screenshots show the same route, viewport dimensions, scroll position or full-page extent, and page state.
- View them side by side. This is often enough to spot obvious changes to text, spacing, color, images, or missing elements.
- Create an overlay or difference image if needed. An overlay makes shifts visible as doubled edges; a difference view highlights pixels that changed. These are practical image-inspection methods, not a guarantee that every highlighted pixel represents a meaningful defect.
- Inspect highlighted areas in context. Look for meaningful layout or content changes as well as harmless-looking rendering noise, such as small font antialiasing differences.
Automate repeat comparisons with Playwright
Playwright Test can create a reference screenshot on the first run of toHaveScreenshot(), then compare future captures with that baseline. Its documentation says the comparison uses pixelmatch and provides controls including maxDiffPixels; the API reference also documents a maximum difference ratio and a per-pixel color threshold (Playwright: Visual comparisons; Playwright SnapshotAssertions API).
A minimal test looks like this:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png');
});
Run the test once to create the expected image, then run it again to compare against that saved image. The exact baseline location and test configuration depend on your Playwright project setup.

Set thresholds only after reviewing the diff
Strict pixel matching is sensitive to even small render changes. Difference-pixel and color thresholds let you permit some variation, but they do not identify whether a change is acceptable. Microsoft’s example configuration includes a 1% pixel-difference allowance and a color threshold of 0.2; these are example settings, not universal recommendations (Microsoft Learn: Configure visual comparisons with Playwright Workspaces).
Review the actual diff before relaxing a threshold or approving a new baseline. A test that passes because its tolerance is broad can still conceal a real layout or content regression.

Keep baselines trustworthy
Store expected screenshots with the tests under version control so reviewers can see what changed. When an intentional design update requires a new reference, update the snapshots explicitly with Playwright’s --update-snapshots option and inspect the resulting files before committing them (Playwright: Visual comparisons).

Choose manual or automated comparison
| Need | Manual image comparison | Automated baseline test |
|---|---|---|
| One-off check of two files | Quick to inspect side by side or as an overlay. | Requires test setup and a saved expected image. |
| Repeated checks after changes | Requires a person to repeat the comparison each time. | Suitable for repeatable checks against a baseline. |
| Scope | Compare the whole image or crop the relevant region in an image tool. | Can capture a page or a selected element, and can mask or suppress volatile areas. |
| Sensitivity | Depends on the viewing method and the reviewer. | Can use configured differing-pixel or color thresholds; these require review. |
| Environment consistency | Depends on how the images were captured. | Can run in a consistent local or CI environment, though environment differences still matter. |
Neither method replaces inspecting the change. For automated comparisons, keep capture conditions stable and make review of visual changes part of the baseline update process.
What a screenshot diff cannot tell you
A visual diff answers whether rendered pixels changed; it does not establish that links work, the page content is accurate, interactions behave correctly, or the page is accessible. Pair visual checks with the functional, content, and accessibility checks relevant to your project. Microsoft’s documentation treats visual comparisons and separate network-mocking and accessibility-auditing capabilities as distinct concerns (Microsoft Learn: Configure visual comparisons with Playwright Workspaces).

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. For a one-off capture, send a GET request with the target URL. It returns a screenshot or PDF; to compare, capture each page state and inspect the resulting images with a side-by-side or diff workflow.
cURL example (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
The capture can remove cookie or consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers say which page verdict applied and whether it was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
