To compare the S&P 500’s valuation with its history, choose one measure, fix the observation date and historical window, and compare only readings calculated on the same basis. Shiller CAPE is one example: it compares the index’s price with average inflation-adjusted earnings over the previous ten years. A high or low reading describes where that measure stands against the history you selected; it does not, by itself, identify a market top, bottom, or near-term return.
Choose a valuation measure before looking at its history
A historical comparison is meaningful only if the current reading and past readings use the same definition. For this example, use Shiller CAPE, also called the Shiller P/E or PE 10. It uses average inflation-adjusted earnings from the previous ten years.

That earnings base differs from a conventional trailing-year P/E, which uses a shorter earnings period. Do not compare a CAPE reading with a conventional P/E history as though the two were interchangeable: they answer related but distinct questions about price relative to earnings.

Write down the date of the valuation observation and the span of history you are using. A table from one date is not a live reading for a later date, and a comparison can change depending on how much history it includes. The available sources do not establish one universally correct historical window or percentile convention for every reader, so state your choice rather than presenting it as authoritative.

For example, Multpl’s Shiller P/E table reports 41.67 on October 5, 2026. That is a dated observation, not a value for October 7, 2026 or a continuing current quote. To interpret it, compare it with CAPE observations from the same series over an explicitly named period.
Make the comparison like for like
- Name the measure: Shiller CAPE, rather than an unspecified “P/E.”
- Confirm its basis: the ten-year average of inflation-adjusted earnings, as defined for the series you use.
- Label both dates and the history: give the observation date and the historical span used for context.
- Describe its position within that history: explain whether the reading is relatively high or low in the selected series, rather than relying on an unqualified label such as “cheap” or “expensive.”
This method keeps the metric, earnings window, inflation adjustment, date, and historical window visible. If any of those change, the comparison may no longer be measuring the same thing.

Know what the index represents
The S&P 500 measures the large-cap segment of the U.S. market. It is float-adjusted market-cap weighted, so companies with larger eligible market values have greater influence on the index than smaller constituents. A valuation reading for the index is therefore an aggregate measure shaped by its constituents and their weights, not a statement that every company in it has the same valuation.

S&P Dow Jones Indices’ methodology also describes divisor adjustments that help preserve index continuity when changes to constituents or shares would otherwise affect the index level. Those calculation mechanics support continuity in the index; they do not determine whether its valuation is attractive.

When using long-run index context, distinguish live index history from hypothetical back-tested data. S&P Dow Jones Indices states that information before the S&P 500’s launch date is hypothetical back-tested data. Such observations should not be described as if they were live index history.

A comparison with past CAPE readings can describe the index’s relative valuation against the chosen historical series. The cited material documents the measure and historical observations; it does not establish that a high or low reading predicts near-term returns or pinpoints when the market will turn. Treat the result as historical context, not a short-term forecast.
