How to Compare Smartphone Battery Life Beyond the mAh Rating

mAh is battery capacity, not a runtime score. Compare phones by matching calls, browsing, video, gaming and standby tests, then check brightness, network, refresh rate and methodology.

The phone with the largest mAh number is not automatically the phone that lasts longest. To compare battery life, match measured runtime to the activities you actually do, then check the brightness, network, refresh rate, workload, background activity and test method behind each result. Treat mAh as battery-capacity context, not as an endurance score.

This approach explains why two phones with similar capacities can finish the day very differently, and why a single blended rating can be misleading for a heavy gamer, a video streamer or someone who spends most of the day on cellular calls.

What mAh tells you—and what it does not

Milliamp-hours (mAh) describe electrical charge capacity. They do not say how much energy the battery stores or how efficiently the phone uses that energy. Qualcomm’s technical explanation expresses the basic relationship as battery life being energy capacity in watt-hours divided by power consumption in watts. A practical conversion is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watt-hours (Wh) = (mAh ÷ 1,000) × nominal battery voltage

Voltage differs between battery designs, so equal mAh figures can represent different energy reserves. Even equal watt-hour figures do not guarantee equal runtime because the display, processor, graphics unit, modem, sensors, drivers and software may draw very different amounts of power. Power use also changes with signal strength, screen brightness, refresh rate, temperature and the work being performed.

That is why a 5,000 mAh phone can lose to a smaller-capacity model in a particular test. Capacity is useful for spotting unusually small or large batteries, but only measured runtime under a stated workload answers the question, “How long will this phone last for me?”

If a manufacturer lists only mAh, do not convert it into a precise number of hours. Look for nominal voltage and, preferably, independent runtime results. A battery’s usable energy can also differ from its headline capacity because phones reserve a small portion to protect the cells and because voltage changes as the battery discharges. Those details reinforce the same rule: use capacity to understand the hardware, then use controlled tests to judge endurance.

Start with the activity that dominates your day

Battery life is usage-pattern dependent. Vidyasagar Rao, writing for Qualcomm’s OnQ blog in 2013, defined it as “the amount of time a phone can run on a single charge for a given ‘usage pattern.’” Compare the scenario closest to your routine before looking at a composite score.

Cellular calls

Call endurance reveals how the modem, radio firmware, audio system and network connection behave during voice use. It is especially useful if you spend hours on calls or work in areas with weak coverage. A Wi-Fi browsing result cannot substitute for a cellular-call result because the radio workload and signal conditions differ.

Ask whether the call test uses a stable signal, which cellular generation is active and whether the phone is held against the head or connected to an accessory. You do not need every laboratory detail to make a decision, but a disclosed cellular setup is more informative than a generic “talk time” claim.

Web browsing and social feeds

Browsing repeatedly wakes the processor, modem and display while pages load and scroll. Check whether the test uses Wi-Fi or cellular data, what browser or page loop is used, and whether the screen remains on continuously. A result based on a fixed local page is not equivalent to one that fetches content over a busy mobile network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Social apps can be more variable than a fixed web loop because they combine video, images, scrolling and background refresh. Treat a browser figure as a controlled comparison, not as a guarantee for an algorithmically changing feed.

Video playback and streaming

Video tests are valuable for viewers, but identify whether the reviewer loops a locally stored file or streams over a network. Codec, resolution, audio output and network activity can change power draw. Continuous playback is a controlled endurance measure; it is not a promise that a mixed-use day will produce the same number of hours.

Downloaded video usually isolates the display, decoder and audio path more cleanly. Streaming adds modem activity and variable network conditions. Compare downloaded with downloaded and streamed with streamed whenever possible, and note whether the display stays at a fixed brightness.

Gaming

Games stress the graphics processor, CPU, display and cooling system together. Compare the same game or workload where possible, and record the tested frame rate and display refresh rate. A gaming result at 60 Hz cannot be treated as a direct match for one at 120 Hz, even if both tests use the same title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also check whether the test measures a short repeatable scene or an unrestricted session. A game may lower frame rate or brightness as the phone heats, changing both endurance and performance. A longer result is not automatically better if it was achieved by reducing the workload below the level you use.

Standby and light use

Standby measures how much energy the phone consumes while the screen is mostly off. It reflects background synchronization, push notifications, location checks and cellular standby. It matters to people who make occasional calls and expect several days between charges, but it can inflate a blended rating for someone who uses the screen heavily.

Standby is also where software settings matter most. An account that syncs frequently, poor reception that keeps the modem searching, or an always-on display can shorten idle time. Do not compare a clean, freshly reset test with a phone carrying years of accounts and notifications and assume the difference is solely hardware.

Read the test setup before comparing numbers

A runtime figure is meaningful only with its controls. Use this checklist when opening any review or laboratory result.

Control to check Why it changes the result What to record
Screen brightness A brighter display consumes more power, and a percentage slider is not a common luminance level across phones. Measured brightness in nits. GSMArena’s Battery Life Test 2.0 uses 200 nits for screen-on scenarios.
Network Weak cellular signals can make the modem work harder; Wi-Fi and cellular data produce different workloads. Wi-Fi, 4G, 5G, or a stated mixed connection, plus the test location when disclosed.
Refresh rate Higher refresh rates can increase display and graphics activity, especially while scrolling or gaming. Fixed or adaptive mode and the refresh rate used during the run.
Content and workload Video codec, page complexity, game scene and frame rate determine processor and GPU activity. The exact loop, app, resolution, frame-rate target and whether content is local or streamed.
Background activity Sync, notifications and installed services can consume power between measured actions. Airplane mode, fresh setup, disabled accounts or other stated background settings.
Temperature and ambient light Heat changes battery and chip efficiency; ambient light can trigger automatic brightness behavior. Room conditions and whether automatic brightness or other adaptive controls were disabled.
Battery condition A worn battery may deliver less usable energy than a new one. Whether the unit was new, reset and charged under a consistent procedure.

GSMArena notes that network environment, background processes, ambient temperature and available light can affect results. Qualcomm likewise cautions that display brightness should be normalized to a standard usable level; 200 nits is an example of such a reference. Matching a slider percentage is not enough.

Look for repeatability as well as a large headline number. A reputable test describes its charge procedure, whether the phone is reset, and how the run ends. A result that stops at a fixed battery percentage can differ from one that runs until shutdown, so compare the endpoint when it is disclosed. If a review omits a control that could materially change the result, label the comparison provisional rather than treating it as exact.

Do not mix different test generations

Test publishers sometimes change their formula. GSMArena’s older endurance rating combined standby with a mix of calls, web browsing and video. Its 2023 Battery Life Test 2.0 instead uses four active scenarios and assumes active use only. GSMArena states that the new and old ratings are both measured in hours but are incomparable because the new score excludes standby.

When a review shows a score, write down the methodology name and publication date. A phone tested under the old endurance rating should not be ranked above or below a phone tested under Battery Life Test 2.0 as though the two numbers came from one scale. The same rule applies when another publisher changes brightness, network conditions or workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Version labels matter even when the test name appears unchanged. Review sites can revise page loops, operating-system versions or scoring weights. If two results are months or years apart, check the methodology notes and device software before drawing a ranking. A newer result may be more realistic without being numerically comparable to an older one.

Use composite scores as summaries, not guarantees

A blended score can efficiently shortlist phones, provided its activity mix resembles your day. GSMArena allows readers to adjust the mix behind its 2023 Active Use Score; the stated default slightly emphasizes web browsing and video. That makes it a useful general-purpose indicator, but not a personal forecast for a person whose day is mostly gaming, navigation or calls.

When two phones are close, open the component results. A device that wins the composite score by a small margin may lose badly in your dominant task. Conversely, a phone with a lower blended number may be the better choice if its call or gaming result is substantially stronger.

Composite scores are most useful for narrowing a shortlist, not for predicting a specific bedtime percentage. Record the score’s activity weights and whether it includes idle time. If your own day is 70 percent video, a score that gives equal weight to calls, web, video and games will answer a different question from the one you are asking.

A repeatable way to compare two phones

  1. Describe your day. Estimate the share of screen time spent on calls, browsing, streaming, games, camera use, navigation and idle periods. Identify the one activity that would make you recharge before bedtime.
  2. Collect matching measurements. Prefer results from the same publisher, test generation and date. Keep continuous-use results separate from mixed-use or standby-inclusive estimates.
  3. Compare the dominant task first. Put the runtime for your main activity in the first column of your notes. If cellular coverage matters, prioritize cellular-call or cellular-data testing over Wi-Fi-only browsing.
  4. Check the controls. Record brightness in nits, network type, refresh rate, content, background settings and temperature. Reject a comparison when one result hides a major difference and no qualification is provided.
  5. Use the balanced score second. Check whether its activity mix matches your usage. Treat it as a summary for shortlisting, not as a guaranteed daily runtime.
  6. Use battery energy as context. Compare mAh and, when available, watt-hours to understand the hardware reserve. Do not let capacity override a large measured-efficiency difference.
  7. Separate autonomy from charging. A fast charger can reduce the inconvenience of a short runtime, but charging speed does not establish longer battery life. Evaluate it as a separate purchase criterion.
  8. Apply a real-world margin. Lab results are comparative. Your signal, temperature, software version, brightness choices and background apps will change the absolute hours.

For a practical spreadsheet, give each phone one row and create separate columns for calls, web, video, gaming, standby, active-use score, brightness, network, refresh rate and test version. Mark missing controls with a question mark instead of silently assuming they match. This prevents a polished but incomplete score from outweighing a better-documented result.

Official labels and independent reviews answer different questions

European Union regulation specifies a battery-life test sequence involving calls, web browsing and video playback. That label provides a standardized reference for products covered by the applicable rules, but its result should not be presented as interchangeable with an independent review’s continuous-video loop, active-use score or standby-inclusive rating.

When reading an official figure, identify the region, edition and test method. When reading a review, identify the publisher and methodology version. Comparing unlike labels creates false precision even when both numbers are expressed in hours.

An official label is useful for a baseline across products sold under the same rules. It does not replace a review that tells you how a high-refresh game performs or how a weak cellular signal affects calls. Use the regulatory result as one standardized reference and independent scenario tests for purchase decisions.

Worked example: interpreting a published result

GSMArena’s buyer’s guide, last updated May 3, 2026, lists the following results for the OnePlus 15. These are GSMArena measurements; they are an example of how to read activity-specific data, not a universal market ranking or an independently reproduced test.

Measure Reported runtime How to use it
Active Use Score 23 hours 7 minutes A blended active-use summary; inspect the underlying mix before applying it to your routine.
Calls 39 hours 12 minutes Most relevant to heavy voice callers, subject to the test’s network and call conditions.
Web 21 hours 48 minutes Useful for browsing-heavy users when their network and refresh-rate settings are comparable.
Video 32 hours 57 minutes Relevant to playback-focused use; verify whether the test content and connection match your scenario.
Game 13 hours 5 minutes The clearest figure for gaming decisions, provided the tested refresh rate and workload fit your games.

The spread between the call, video, web and game figures is the lesson: one handset does not have one single battery-life behavior. A buyer who games should not select solely from the call result, and a buyer who mostly watches downloaded video should not assume the gaming figure predicts playback.

The figures also show why “best battery life” needs a qualifier. The same phone can look exceptional in calls and video yet merely average in gaming. Use the result that corresponds to the task you pay for, then check whether the test controls match the competing model.

Capacity, efficiency and software work together

The battery is only one part of the power budget. The display’s panel type and brightness, the processor and GPU’s workload, modem behavior, sensor polling, driver tuning and background software all contribute. A newer chipset name may improve efficiency in one workload while a high-refresh display or weak cellular signal offsets that gain in another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for repeated patterns across several scenarios rather than one spectacular number. If a phone performs well in calls, browsing, video and games under matched controls, that is stronger evidence of system-level efficiency than a large mAh figure alone. If results diverge sharply, choose according to the task you value most and investigate the test conditions before drawing a general conclusion.

Software updates can change background behavior, modem drivers and power management. That does not make older measurements useless, but it is a reason to note the operating-system version and test date. A phone that gains efficiency after an update may not match its launch review, while a new feature such as an always-on display can increase idle drain if enabled.

Common comparison mistakes and how to fix them

  • Mistake: ranking by mAh. Fix: convert capacity to energy when voltage is available, then use measured runtime for the relevant workload.
  • Mistake: comparing a mixed-use estimate with a continuous loop. Fix: place them in separate categories and compare only like-for-like tests.
  • Mistake: ignoring brightness. Fix: prefer nits-based controls, such as the 200-nit screen-on setting disclosed by GSMArena.
  • Mistake: treating Wi-Fi as cellular performance. Fix: use cellular-call or cellular-data measurements when coverage and radio use are important.
  • Mistake: overlooking refresh rate. Fix: record the fixed or adaptive rate, especially for games and scrolling tests.
  • Mistake: mixing old and new ratings from one publisher. Fix: keep GSMArena’s pre-2023 endurance rating separate from Battery Life Test 2.0.
  • Mistake: reading a composite score as a promise. Fix: inspect component results and compare the score’s activity mix with your own.
  • Mistake: assuming laboratory hours equal personal hours. Fix: allow for signal quality, temperature, ambient light, software and background processes in your expectations.
  • Mistake: using charging speed as a battery-life proxy. Fix: assess charging convenience separately from how long one charge lasts.
  • Mistake: comparing phones with different software states. Fix: note the operating-system version, reset condition and update status, especially when results are far apart in date.
  • Mistake: treating a missing control as a neutral control. Fix: mark unknown brightness, network or refresh settings as unknown and lower confidence in the ranking.

A quick checklist before you choose

  • Is the measured result for your main activity?
  • Was it produced with the same test version as the competing phone?
  • Are brightness, network, refresh rate and workload stated?
  • Does the test include standby, or active use only?
  • Are you comparing local playback with local playback, or streaming with streaming?
  • Do the phone’s call, web, video and game results point in the same direction?
  • Is the mAh or watt-hour figure being used only as capacity context?
  • Have charging speed and autonomy been evaluated as separate criteria?
  • Is the software version and test date close enough to make the comparison fair?
  • Would a weak-signal commute, hot car or bright outdoor screen change your priority?

The most defensible answer to “Which phone has the best battery life?” is therefore conditional: the best phone is the one with the strongest measured runtime in your dominant task, under controls that match the competing result, with a balanced score used only as supporting evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a higher mAh battery last longer?

Not necessarily. mAh measures charge capacity, while runtime depends on watt-hours, display power, modem efficiency, processor workload, software and signal conditions. Compare matched runtime tests for the activity you use most.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the fairest way to compare two phone battery tests?

Use the same publisher and methodology version when possible, then match brightness in nits, network type, refresh rate, content, background settings and test endpoint. Keep standby-inclusive scores separate from active-use results.

Should I trust a phone’s total battery-life score?

Use it as a shortlist indicator only. Check which activities and weights create the score; a phone can lead overall while losing badly in your main task, such as gaming or cellular calls.

Is gaming battery life different from video battery life?

Yes. Gaming loads the CPU, GPU, display and cooling system, while video playback relies more on the decoder, display and audio path. Compare the specific scenario, frame rate and refresh rate you care about.

Do fast-charging phones have better battery life?

No. Fast charging reduces the time needed to recover charge but does not prove that one charge lasts longer. Evaluate charging speed and autonomy as separate criteria.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can my phone last less than a laboratory result?

Your signal strength, brightness, temperature, background accounts, software version, adaptive refresh rate and app mix may be more demanding than the controlled test. Lab figures are comparative rather than personal guarantees.

The Bottom Line

Ignore mAh rankings on their own. Choose the phone that delivers the strongest like-for-like runtime in your dominant activity, then use composite scores, capacity and charging speed as supporting—not substituting—evidence.
