Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Compare the current live storefront with the unpublished redesign using the same page paths, viewport sizes, browser, and customer state. Review side-by-side screenshots or an overlay to find visual changes, then decide which are intended and which need attention. Screenshots show rendered differences—not whether the redesign is faster or better for customers—so measure performance separately.
Choose representative pages and states
Start with the homepage, one representative product page, and one collection page. Shopify identifies home, product, and collection URLs as useful pages to audit in its storefront performance guidance. Add pages that matter to your store, such as a high-traffic landing page, and capture important interaction states rather than relying on one initial page load.

- Homepage: Check the hero, navigation, promotional content, and primary calls to action.
- Product page: Include a representative product and, where relevant, a selected variant, changed image, or stock state.
- Collection page: Check the product grid, filters, sorting, and pagination if customers use them.
- Interaction states: Capture navigation menus, cart states, variant selection, or other redesigned elements that are not visible on first load.
Use the same product, collection, and state in both versions. If a page has personalized or changing content, record the relevant customer and content conditions so a difference is not mistaken for a design change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPreview the redesign without replacing the live theme
Use an unpublished theme as the proposed version, and preview it through Shopify’s theme editor or your development workflow. Shopify documents previewing themes and notes that, in most cases, the preview merchants see in the editor should match what customers see on the live store. That is a useful expectation, not a guarantee that every app, live-data condition, or third-party integration will behave identically. See Shopify’s theme editor documentation.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Keep the live storefront as your baseline and the unpublished theme as the candidate. For each page, use corresponding paths—for example, the same product handle in both versions. If you use Shopify preview links in a performance audit, Shopify recommends appending pb=0 to hide the preview bar so it does not skew results; this is a performance-audit detail, not a substitute for matching visual capture conditions.
Make the screenshot conditions comparable
A valid before-and-after pair should differ because of the redesign, not because the browser or page state changed. Keep these conditions consistent:

- Viewport width and height, plus device scale factor.
- Browser and browser version; ideally, capture and compare on the same machine and operating setup.
- Page path, locale, customer login state, selected product variant, and other relevant content state.
- Wait condition and capture timing. Allow fonts, images, and page layout to settle; account for rotating banners, timestamps, inventory changes, and personalization.
- Cookie consent and other overlays. Keep the same consent state in both captures, or explicitly treat the banner as a state to inspect.
Playwright warns that screenshots can render differently across operating systems, browser versions, settings, hardware, power sources, and headless mode. Generate and compare snapshots in the same environment when possible; see the Playwright screenshot comparison documentation.
Capture, compare, and classify each difference
- Capture a baseline: Save screenshots of the live theme for each selected path and state.
- Capture the candidate: Use the same conditions on the unpublished theme and save the matching screenshots.
- Compare visually: Begin with side-by-side images. Then use a transparent overlay or pixel-difference report to spot shifts, missing content, clipping, unexpected restyling, and changed image crops.
- Interpret the output: Mark each important difference as intended, needs a fix, or needs a decision, and assign an owner before launch.
Playwright Test supports screenshot baselines with toHaveScreenshot() and visual comparison. Automated diffs are review aids: a changed pixel does not tell you whether the difference is an intentional redesign, a dynamic value, or a defect. Review each meaningful result in context.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Check mobile and desktop separately
Capture at least one desktop and one mobile viewport. Shopify separates desktop and mobile storefront performance experiences in its Web Performance reports; the same split is useful for visual review because responsive changes can alter layout rather than simply scale it.
- At each width, inspect navigation, text legibility, image cropping, sticky elements, and calls to action.
- Check whether grids, product details, and promotional sections reflow as intended.
- Use the exact same viewport dimensions for the before-and-after pair at each device size.
Measure speed separately from appearance
A screenshot comparison establishes that the rendered page changed; it does not show whether loading, responsiveness, or layout stability improved. For lab testing, run Lighthouse multiple times under controlled conditions and compare the medians. Shopify cautions that a single Lighthouse run can vary by 5 to 10 points because of CPU and network variation, so avoid treating one score as a conclusive result. See Shopify’s performance guidance.

Then review Shopify Web Performance reports for real-user Core Web Vitals. Shopify describes LCP as loading speed, INP as responsiveness, and CLS as unexpected visual movement. Reports distinguish desktop and mobile, can take up to 36 hours to show data, provide a 90-day historical window, and summarize metrics over a 30-day real-user period, according to the Shopify Help Center. Allow for that reporting lag when assessing a newly launched theme.

Save each pair with labels that identify the theme version, page, viewport, browser, and capture date. Keep a short change log alongside the images, with each notable difference categorized as intended, needs a fix, or needs a decision. This makes review and sign-off more useful than an unlabeled folder of screenshots.

Troubleshoot misleading differences
- The page looks shifted everywhere: Check that viewport dimensions, browser version, device scale factor, and capture environment match. A rendering-environment change can affect many pixels at once.
- Only prices, stock, or promotional content differ: Confirm that both captures used the same live data and customer context. Record dynamic values rather than treating them automatically as layout defects.
- A banner, chat widget, or consent prompt appears in one image: Match consent and visitor state, or inspect that state deliberately in both versions. Apps, cookies, and third-party scripts can behave differently in preview and production.
- The preview differs from the live store in an unexplained way: Isolate the page, app, personalization, customer state, or third-party script involved. Shopify’s preview guidance does not promise identical behavior for every production integration.
- A large diff appears even though the design seems unchanged: Inspect rotating content, animation timing, timestamps, loaded fonts, and images. Stabilize or wait for these elements before recapturing.
- A speed score conflicts with the screenshots: Treat them as different evidence. Re-run controlled performance tests and review real-user reports rather than inferring speed from visual similarity.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a live or preview URL with one API request. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot and page-information tools.
For a comparable pair, send the live URL and the unpublished-theme preview URL as separate requests, keeping viewport and other capture options the same. Use the returned images for the side-by-side or overlay review described above. ScreenshotNeo supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, and PDF output, plus options such as full-page capture, viewport presets, and custom wait conditions. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.
