Include access and waiting time, transfers, parking or drop-off, the last-mile walk, return service, and how many days you must commute. Seattle versus Bellevue alone does not tell you which job has the better commute: your exact home and office locations do.
Build a like-for-like comparison
Use a normal workday for each offer and add a second scenario for a disruption or unusually difficult day. Keep the starting point, arrival deadline, weekday, and number of required office days consistent. Compare each realistic mode you would actually consider rather than weighing one job’s train segment against the other job’s whole drive.

Use current trip-planning information for the actual addresses and check agency alerts. For driving, evaluate the travel window you would use and, if possible, more than one representative weekday. A single city-to-city estimate is not a reliable substitute for an address- and time-specific trip.

The 2 Line now crosses Lake Washington
Sound Transit’s Crosslake Connection opened March 28, 2026. The 2 Line now crosses Lake Washington and connects with the 1 Line at International District/Chinatown in Seattle. That makes older assumptions about cross-lake transit potentially stale; check an itinerary for your addresses rather than relying on a past route description. Sound Transit announced the opening.

Frequency is only one part of the trip
At opening, Sound Transit described trains approximately every eight minutes at peak at the new stations and every 10–15 minutes at other times. These are network service intervals, not a promise of a particular door-to-door commute or arrival time. Check the schedule and alerts for the station and time you need. Sound Transit’s opening announcement gives the service context.
Sound Transit’s 2026 Bus Service Plan describes eight-minute peak 2 Line operation across Lake Washington and bus connections to the line at South Bellevue or Bellevue Downtown. Recheck bus connections for travel after October 2026
Sound Transit’s March 2026 service-change notice said ST Express routes would continue on existing routes and schedules until October 2026. If you are evaluating a commute after that point, do not assume those routes or schedules are unchanged: check current route information and service alerts. Check Sound Transit service changes and current routes and schedules.
Test the commute against the job, not just the map
- Pin down the actual endpoints. Use your home location and the office entrance or building address for each offer. If you do not yet know the office location, ask before treating a route estimate as dependable.
- Set the real schedule. Compare the same weekday and required arrival time, and include your expected departure time for the return trip. Check whether the employer’s in-office requirement is fixed or flexible.
- Route each workable mode. For transit, include access, waiting, transfers, and the final walk; for driving, include the approach to the destination and parking or drop-off. Use current trip information and alerts.
- Calculate recurring costs on equal terms. Apply fares, parking, tolls if relevant, fuel, and any confirmed employer contribution to the same number of office days. Ask each employer whether commuter benefits or transit support are available; do not count an unconfirmed benefit.
- Stress-test the plan. Consider a missed connection, service disruption, or a day when you must stay late. Identify a realistic alternative and check whether it still gets you home at a workable time.
- Compare the burden across a work pattern. A route’s daily duration and cost matter differently when one job requires fewer office days. Use the actual attendance expectations rather than assuming a standard hybrid schedule.
Know what a city-level comparison cannot tell you
Without your home and workplace addresses, required hours, mode preferences, parking needs, and office schedule, there is no sound basis to declare Seattle or Bellevue faster, cheaper, or more reliable for you. Specific drive times, transit fares, parking access, and employer benefits also depend on details not established by the city names alone. Keep those unknowns visible until you can compare concrete itineraries and offer terms.
