How to Compare Screenshots of a Single-Page App After Navigation

A practical Playwright workflow for capturing and comparing an SPA view after in-app navigation, with guidance on stability, diffs, and baselines.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Playwright to perform the in-app navigation, wait for a destination-specific UI condition, and then compare a screenshot with a reviewed baseline. A route change alone does not prove that a single-page app (SPA) has finished rendering the destination view. For repeatable comparisons, keep the test environment and data stable, and treat every visual diff as something to investigate—not automatically as a bug or harmless noise.

Why navigation needs a UI-ready check

In an SPA, client-side routing can replace the visible view without loading a new document. Browser navigation events that describe document loading therefore may not signal that the destination content is ready. After triggering the action, wait for something that identifies the destination—such as its heading or a key control—before taking the screenshot.

This is also useful when navigation does load a document: a meaningful UI condition ties the screenshot to the state you intend to compare, rather than only to a network event.

Compare screenshots with Playwright Test

Playwright Test provides toHaveScreenshot() for comparing a page with a stored reference image. You can use a locator screenshot when only one component matters. The first run creates a reference; later runs compare against it. Review the generated baseline and commit it deliberately.

Example: navigate, wait, and compare the destination

Save this as a Playwright test, changing the URL, selectors, and expected filename to match your app. The example assumes the app is available at the local URL shown and that clicking the link causes its destination heading to appear.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('destination view matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('http://localhost:3000');

  await page.getByRole('link', { name: 'Reports' }).click();

  // Wait for destination-specific content, not just a route or load event.
  await expect(
    page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Reports' })
  ).toBeVisible();

  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('reports-page.png', {
    fullPage: true,
  });
});

If the whole page is not the subject of the test, compare the relevant component instead:

await expect(page.getByTestId('reports-summary'))
  .toHaveScreenshot('reports-summary.png');

Use selectors that identify the intended destination reliably. If the same heading appears in multiple places, scope the locator to the relevant region or wait for a more distinctive element.

Run and review the baseline

  1. Run the test once in the environment you intend to use for visual checks. Inspect the generated reference image to confirm it shows the correct route, data, and viewport.
  2. Commit the approved reference image with the test so later runs compare against the same baseline.
  3. Run the test again after a change. Playwright reports a visual mismatch when the new capture differs beyond the configured comparison criteria.
  4. Inspect the actual image and diff before deciding whether to change the UI or update the baseline. Use --update-snapshots only when the new appearance is intentional and reviewed.

Make captures repeatable

Visual output can vary with the operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright recommends running tests in the same environment used to generate the baseline. Keep that environment consistent where practical, including the browser and viewport, and use stable test data so unrelated changes do not produce diffs.

  • Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.

Control animation and changing content

Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive page screenshots to match before comparison. Finite animations are fast-forwarded to completion; infinite animations are canceled to their initial state during capture and then resumed. This helps with animation-related variation, but it does not make changing application data deterministic.

For regions that are expected to change independently of the design, use a screenshot stylesheet to hide or otherwise neutralize them. For example, a test-only stylesheet can suppress a rotating promotion or timestamp while leaving the surrounding layout visible. Apply such styling narrowly: hiding too much can conceal a genuine regression.

Choose comparison tolerance deliberately

Playwright allows pixel-difference tolerances to be configured. A tolerance is a rule for how much variation the comparison accepts; it is not evidence that every ignored difference is harmless. Start with a strict comparison, inspect recurring noise, and adjust only when you understand which variation is acceptable. Review image diffs even when a test passes after a tolerance change.

Diagnose a visual diff before updating the baseline

  • Destination content is missing or stale: the screenshot may have been taken before the SPA finished rendering. Wait for a destination-specific heading or key element, and verify that the test’s navigation action actually succeeded.
  • Large layout changes appear: check the route, viewport, test data, and whether the change is an intended design update before touching the baseline.
  • Small differences recur across runs: check that browser and operating-system conditions match the baseline environment, then identify dynamic content or motion that needs control.
  • A diff disappears after raising tolerance: inspect what the comparison now accepts. A passing result does not establish that the remaining visual change is safe.
  • The test fails in another machine or CI environment: compare its browser version, operating system, headless setting, and viewport with the environment that produced the reference. Align them where possible rather than immediately replacing the baseline.

Local snapshots or hosted visual review?

Playwright’s documented workflow stores reference snapshots for tests to compare. Percy documents a hosted integration with Playwright for visual testing. These approaches address different team needs: a local snapshot workflow fits teams that want comparisons within existing Playwright tests, while a hosted review workflow may suit teams that need shared review. Decide based on where your team wants baselines and diffs stored, how reviews should happen, and how consistently you can control rendering. Verify current Percy product and integration details before choosing a plan.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need an image or PDF of a page that can be reached by URL, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API. For an SPA, an API capture of a URL is not a substitute for driving an in-app action and asserting that its destination UI is ready; use the Playwright workflow above when that transition is what you need to test.

Example request (replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before a shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents to take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a URL-change event alone to decide when to capture an SPA?

No. Wait for a destination-specific element or other UI condition that confirms the intended view is visible.

Should I update a snapshot whenever the test fails?

No. Inspect the new image and diff first; update the reference only after confirming the appearance change is intentional.
