How to Compare Rubber Manufacturers Using Margins, Capacity and Debt

Learn how to compare rubber manufacturers fairly by matching business models and reporting periods, separating margin definitions, checking actual output against capacity, and assessing debt alongside cash flow.

Compare rubber manufacturers by matching their business models, reporting periods and accounting measures before ranking their margins, capacity or debt. A rubber processor, a glove maker and a tire company do not have directly comparable economics: their products, input costs, production stages and capacity units differ. Use margins to understand profitability, capacity and utilization to assess production, and debt alongside cash generation to judge financial risk. No single metric establishes which company is the better investment.

Why rubber manufacturers need a fair comparison

Companies described as rubber manufacturers can operate at very different points in the value chain. A natural-rubber processor sells materials such as technically specified rubber or ribbed smoked sheet; a latex or glove producer turns inputs into finished medical or industrial products; a tire maker manufactures a more complex product with its own material mix, plant requirements and customer base. Their gross margins reflect different activities, so a higher percentage at one type of company does not automatically mean it is more efficient or financially stronger.

Even within the same category, a comparison can be distorted by different fiscal year ends, currencies, segment boundaries, acquisitions, divestitures, one-off expenses or definitions of adjusted earnings. Start by making the companies and periods comparable. Then read margins, operating volumes, capacity and debt together rather than treating any one as a standalone score.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should you set up the comparison?

Choose peers with similar businesses

Separate natural-rubber processors, latex and glove producers, and tire manufacturers where possible. If the investment question requires comparing across categories, label the business-model differences and use the comparison to identify trade-offs—not to declare that a margin gap alone proves one company is better.

Product mix matters even among processors. North East Rubber (NER) describes a mix that includes RSS, STR, mixed rubber and rubber flooring. Differences in product, customer or geographic mix can affect prices and costs, so do not assume that two companies selling products broadly described as rubber have interchangeable economics.

Match the period, currency and scope

For every figure, record the fiscal year, reporting currency, whether it covers the consolidated company or a segment, and whether it is an audited reported result or a management-adjusted measure. Compare the same reporting period when possible. If the fiscal years differ, state the mismatch rather than presenting the values as though they cover identical market conditions.

Do not compare Thai-baht amounts directly with figures in another currency. Convert amounts only with a clearly stated method and date, and remember that exchange rates do not make unlike products or accounting measures comparable. Ratios avoid the arithmetic problem of unlike currencies, but they do not remove differences in business mix or definitions.

Check changes in the company’s perimeter. Goodyear’s FY2025 Form 10-K describes portfolio divestitures and operating-footprint actions during 2025. A year-over-year comparison should account for those changes: revenue, margins, debt or capacity may reflect a different set of operations than in the prior year.

Keep reported and adjusted numbers separate

Build one column for reported measures and a separate one for any adjusted measures. For each adjusted figure, note exactly which items were excluded and who defined the adjustment. Do not compare one company’s adjusted EBITDA margin with another company’s reported EBITDA margin without explaining the difference.

One-off items can make a period look unusually weak or strong. Sri Trang Gloves (STGT) disclosed THB 634.0 million of Q4 2025 one-time expenses, including flooding-related expenses and impairments. Its reported SG&A and margins need that context when considered alongside adjusted results. The existence of an unusual charge does not mean it should be ignored: show the reported outcome, then explain any adjusted measure and its exclusions.

How do you compare margins?

Margins express a profit measure as a share of revenue, but each answers a different question. Use the company-reported definitions, and calculate ratios from consistent period totals only when the underlying figures and definitions are available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Measure What it helps assess What to check
Gross margin Profitability after the costs included in cost of sales, relative to revenue. What the company includes in cost of sales; product mix, raw-material prices, selling prices, energy, and utilization.
Operating margin Operating profit relative to revenue after operating expenses included in the reported measure. Reported versus adjusted operating profit; selling and administrative costs, restructuring, impairments and other exceptional items.
EBITDA margin EBITDA relative to revenue; a view of earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. The issuer’s EBITDA definition, any exclusions, and whether the figure is reported or adjusted. EBITDA does not account for interest, taxes, capital spending or working-capital needs.

When calculating a margin from statement figures, use the same reporting period and scope for numerator and denominator. A basic ratio is the stated profit measure divided by revenue, multiplied by 100. If the issuer has not provided enough information to reproduce a measure, retain the issuer’s label and definition instead of implying that your calculation is identical.

Separate margin level from margin change

A high margin is a snapshot, not a complete account of performance. Compare the current level with the company’s own prior periods and investigate the drivers of change. Raw-material costs, selling prices and the timing of price pass-through, product mix, currency, energy, production utilization and one-off expenses may all affect margins. The available figures do not establish a single cause for every company’s margin movement; identify drivers only when the company’s disclosures support them.

STGT reported FY2025 gross margin of 9.1%, compared with 8.7% in 2024, and said costs fell faster than sales. It also reported FY2025 EBITDA margin of 14.3% excluding one-time items, compared with 13.7% on the same exclusion basis for 2024. Keep that qualification attached to both EBITDA figures: they are not unadjusted reported margins. The same FY2025 management discussion reported 77.7% capacity utilization, down from 82.8% in 2024, providing a production measure to consider alongside the margin results—not proof by itself of why margins changed.

For NER, its 2026 factsheet reports a FY2025 gross profit margin of 9.63%. Treat that as the company’s disclosed measure; do not assume it is calculated identically to STGT’s or another producer’s. The same factsheet reports FY2025 revenue of THB 30,510 million, EBITDA of THB 2,728 million and net profit of THB 1,885 million. These are issuer-reported amounts in Thai baht, not a harmonized peer comparison.

How do capacity, production and utilization differ?

Capacity describes the amount a facility or company is equipped or intended to produce under a stated definition. Actual production or sales volume describes output or shipments over a period. Utilization expresses production relative to a capacity base, but the precise denominator and period matter. Do not treat the three measures as synonyms.

  • Installed capacity: a stated capacity already in place, subject to the company’s definition and the relevant product or facility scope.
  • Production or sales volume: an actual quantity produced or sold during a specified period. Production and sales are not automatically the same.
  • Capacity utilization: a percentage tied to a stated period and capacity measure. Check whether it refers to a facility, product line or company-wide operations.
  • Planned or target capacity: an intended future level. It is not completed capacity and should not be presented as current output.

NER’s 2026 factsheet reports FY2025 sales volume of 475,430 tons. STGT’s 2026 FY2025 management discussion reports utilization of 77.7% in 2025 and 82.8% in 2024. Sri Trang Agro-Industry (STA), in a 2026 SET company snapshot, describes a target of 3.86 million tons of installed natural-rubber capacity by 2026. The measures refer to different companies and businesses; a ton of natural-rubber capacity is not comparable to glove output or tire production. Nor should a sales-volume figure be compared directly with installed capacity without matching product scope and time period.

Distinguish a target from an operating asset

STA’s snapshot also describes approximate planned investment of THB 9,000 million for TSR plant expansion and THB 950 million for LTX expansion. These are stated plans and targets, not evidence that the investment has been completed or the target capacity achieved. In an analysis, place planned capacity and planned spending in a forward-looking section; update the comparison with later company or exchange disclosures before treating either as current operating capacity.

Connect utilization to margins carefully

Utilization can help explain fixed-cost absorption: when production uses more of a plant’s available capacity, fixed manufacturing costs may be spread across more output. But utilization alone does not establish profitability. Selling prices, input costs, product mix, plant downtime, inventory changes and the definition of capacity also matter. A company can add capacity without using it fully, and a percentage from one producer should not be treated as a direct efficiency score against another producer with a different product and denominator.

How do you assess debt without overrating EBITDA?

Debt should be considered with the cash available to service it, not ranked by a headline debt amount alone. Extract the same set of figures from each company’s audited filings for the same period and scope. Where the disclosures permit, distinguish gross borrowings from cash and equivalents, calculate net debt consistently, and examine debt service and cash generation.

  1. Collect gross debt and cash. Record borrowings, cash and equivalents, currency and reporting date. Check whether lease liabilities or other obligations are included in the company’s stated debt measure.
  2. Calculate net debt consistently. A basic calculation is gross debt minus cash and equivalents. State any exclusions and use the same treatment for each peer.
  3. Review operating cash flow and capital expenditure. Compare cash generated from operations with the spending needed to maintain or expand operations. Consider cash remaining after capital needs rather than treating EBITDA as cash available for repayment.
  4. Check interest expense and coverage. Compare interest expense with a clearly defined earnings or cash-flow measure. State the calculation; different coverage ratios answer different questions, and EBITDA does not capture interest expense or capital spending.
  5. Read maturities and borrowing terms. Check when debt falls due, the disclosed fixed-versus-variable rate mix, and currency exposure. A manageable-looking balance can still pose refinancing or foreign-exchange risk if obligations are concentrated or mismatched with cash flows.

Debt-to-EBITDA can be a useful screening ratio when both inputs use consistent periods and definitions, but it is not a complete repayment test. A company with substantial expansion spending or weak operating cash conversion may have less capacity to reduce debt than the ratio suggests. Conversely, a one-off disruption to EBITDA can make a single-period leverage ratio look unusually high. Pair leverage with interest coverage, cash flow, capital expenditure, debt maturities and the company’s stated borrowing terms.

The surfaced company examples do not provide a harmonized debt dataset for all the named businesses. They therefore do not support a defensible cross-company debt ranking. Build one from the latest audited statements rather than filling gaps with estimates or treating missing figures as zero.

How do expansion, input costs and corporate changes affect the read?

Margin and leverage ratios describe outcomes; understanding the business context helps explain whether those outcomes may persist. For each company, examine the disclosed drivers that can change costs, volumes or the scope of the business:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Raw-material prices and pass-through: identify key inputs, how quickly selling prices respond, and whether the company discloses hedging. A lag between input-cost changes and customer pricing can affect margins.
  • Product and customer mix: check whether the company is selling a different mix of products or serving different customers than in the comparison period.
  • Geographic and currency exposure: note where operations and sales occur, which currencies affect costs and revenue, and any disclosed currency risk.
  • Utilization and capacity additions: distinguish commissioned facilities from announced expansions, and consider how new investment affects capital spending and available production.
  • Restructuring, impairments and unusual events: retain reported results, then separately identify disclosed one-time charges rather than silently removing them.
  • Acquisitions and divestitures: note whether the business perimeter changed. Goodyear’s FY2025 filing is a concrete reminder that portfolio actions and footprint changes can complicate a simple year-over-year trend.

Forecasts are not actual issuer results. A May 2024 Beyond Securities report on NER discusses margin hedging and historical utilization, but its forward figures were analyst estimates at publication. Label any forecast with its publisher and date, and keep it separate from subsequently reported company results.

A practical comparison worksheet

Use one row per company and period, retaining enough context to explain every ratio. A worksheet can begin with the following fields:

Comparison field What to record Why it matters
Business and product scope Processor, glove or latex producer, tire maker; key product mix; consolidated company or segment. Establishes whether the peer comparison is meaningful.
Period and basis Fiscal year and end date, reporting currency, reported or adjusted, and adjustment definition. Prevents mismatched periods and measures from appearing equivalent.
Profitability Gross, operating and EBITDA margins, each with its stated definition and exclusions. Separates production economics from broader operating costs and earnings conventions.
Production Installed capacity, actual production or sales volume, utilization, units and period. Keeps capacity targets and actual output distinct.
Debt and cash Gross debt, cash, net debt, interest expense, operating cash flow, capital expenditure and maturities. Shows both obligations and the resources available to meet them.
Drivers and scope changes Input prices, pass-through, mix, currency, utilization, expansion, restructuring and divestitures. Provides context for movements that a ratio alone cannot explain.

Before drawing a conclusion, check whether each cell is drawn from the same fiscal period and company scope. Mark unavailable information as not stated and identify the filing or disclosure from which the other figures came. If a figure is an estimate, a plan or an adjusted result, label it where it appears. Refresh balances and operating measures from the latest audited statements before making a current ranking; the FY2025 examples here are company or exchange disclosures available in 2026, not a substitute for later filings.

What the available FY2025 examples show—and do not show

Company Disclosed measure Interpretation limit
North East Rubber (NER) FY2025 gross profit margin of 9.63%; revenue of THB 30,510 million; sales volume of 475,430 tons; EBITDA of THB 2,728 million; net profit of THB 1,885 million, in its 2026 factsheet. Do not assume its gross-margin definition matches another producer’s; product mix includes RSS, STR, mixed rubber and rubber flooring.
Sri Trang Gloves (STGT) FY2025 gross margin of 9.1% versus 8.7% in 2024; EBITDA margin excluding one-time items of 14.3% versus 13.7%; utilization of 77.7% versus 82.8%. The EBITDA margin excludes one-time items. The company also disclosed THB 634.0 million of Q4 2025 one-time expenses, including flooding-related expenses and impairments.
Sri Trang Agro-Industry (STA) A 2026 SET company snapshot describes intended installed natural-rubber capacity of 3.86 million tons by 2026, with approximate planned investment of THB 9,000 million for TSR and THB 950 million for LTX expansion. Capacity and investment are plans or targets in the snapshot, not confirmation of completed expansion or achieved capacity.
Goodyear Its FY2025 Form 10-K describes portfolio divestitures and operating-footprint measures. Trend comparisons need to account for the changed business scope.

These disclosures illustrate how to preserve labels and context; they do not form a complete, like-for-like valuation or financial-strength ranking. The reported values span different business models and measures, and the examples do not establish comparable debt balances for all four companies.
