How to Compare Rocket Engines: Thrust, Efficiency, Reusability, and Cost

A fair rocket-engine comparison starts with mission fit, then checks thrust and specific impulse at stated conditions, demonstrated reuse, and lifecycle costs on a consistent basis.

Compare rocket engines against the same mission and operating conditions—not by picking the largest thrust or specific-impulse number. A useful comparison identifies the engine’s role, labels thrust and specific impulse (Isp) with their conditions, checks demonstrated reuse and maintenance demands, and defines which costs are included. Without those boundaries, figures that look comparable may describe different things.

Start with the mission and the unit of comparison

There is no context-free “best” rocket engine. An engine is part of a vehicle and mission: its stage, propellant, operating environment, performance requirements, reliability needs, and technical risk all matter. NASA’s propulsion fundamentals material identifies application or mission requirements as drivers of engine-cycle selection, alongside propellants, performance, safety and reliability, reusability, technical risk, cost, and schedule. Before comparing numbers, establish whether each figure is for one engine, a group of engines, a complete vehicle, or a mission. Also check whether the engines serve comparable roles and whether the figures refer to equivalent operating conditions. A single-engine figure and a vehicle-wide total are different measures, not competing scores.

Compare thrust only at stated conditions

Thrust is a force, and its value depends on operating conditions. NASA expresses the relationship as F = ṁVe + Ae(pe − p0): thrust depends on propellant mass flow, exhaust velocity, and the nozzle exit-pressure difference relative to ambient pressure. As a result, a thrust figure should state its unit, engine variant, operating environment (such as sea level or vacuum), throttle point if applicable, and whether it applies to one engine or an aggregate. NASA’s reference for the SLS interim cryogenic propulsion stage describes nearly 25,000 pounds of thrust for a single RL10 engine. Separately, NASA’s Launch Services Program describes more than 5 million pounds of liftoff thrust from 27 Merlin engines on Falcon Heavy. These figures illustrate different contexts—one engine and a launch vehicle’s engine group—and do not establish a direct ranking. NASA: SLS interim cryogenic propulsion stage; NASA Launch Services Program: Falcon Heavy

Use specific impulse for propellant efficiency

Specific impulse, usually written Isp and reported in seconds, is a standard indicator of rocket-engine propellant efficiency. NASA explains that a higher Isp means more thrust for the same amount of propellant in the comparison being described. Compare Isp only when the engine variant and operating conditions are identified; it is not, by itself, a measure of total mission performance. NASA: Specific impulse

NASA’s 2023 propulsion education presentation gives illustrative values of 300 seconds for LOX/kerosene, 380 seconds for methane/LOX, and 450 seconds for LOX/H2. These are educational examples for propellant combinations, not a controlled, named-engine head-to-head comparison. They should not be read as guaranteed values for every engine using those propellants. NASA propulsion fundamentals presentation (2023)

Assess reusability as an operating system, not a label

A reusable design claim or reusable vehicle does not, by itself, show that each engine has completed repeated use economically. Look for evidence about the engine hardware’s reuse history, reliability across uses, maintenance access and effort, recovery method, inspection, and refurbishment. NASA’s framework groups the relevant considerations as reliability (including integrity, life, and number of uses), operability (maintenance and accessibility), and cost (procurement, retrieval, and refurbishment). Keep demonstrated reuse separate from intended reuse. If a comparison lacks engine-level reuse counts, reliability after reuse, or maintenance details, identify those items as not established rather than inferring them from the vehicle’s design or recovery approach.

Compare cost over the same lifecycle boundary

A cost comparison is meaningful only when it counts the same things and uses the same time basis. State whether the number covers engine development, acquisition or production, retrieval, refurbishment, operations, or some combination; whether it is per engine, flight, or delivered payload; and how many reuses are assumed.

A NASA technical presentation abstract says that for reusable hardware to compete with expendable hardware, recovery and refurbishment costs must be lower than development and acquisition costs, while reliability after reuse must remain the same or nearly the same as on first use. That is a framework for evaluating reuse economics, not proof that reuse always lowers costs. NASA technical presentation abstract

Build a like-for-like comparison

For each candidate, record the mission role and the conditions behind its reported performance. A compact comparison sheet can expose missing information before numbers are treated as evidence of a winner:

  • Role and scope: engine variant, vehicle and stage role, propellant, and whether each value is per engine, engine group, vehicle, or mission.
  • Thrust: force unit, sea-level or vacuum condition, throttle point if relevant, and source.
  • Efficiency: Isp in seconds, stated operating condition, and source.
  • Reuse: demonstrated engine reuse, number of uses if reported, reliability evidence, recovery, inspection, and refurbishment details.
  • Cost: included lifecycle stages, time basis, unit of comparison, and reuse assumptions.
  • Unreported requirements: mark missing values as not stated by the source; do not fill gaps with estimates or figures from a different engine role.

Only compare candidates directly when their mission roles and operating conditions are sufficiently aligned. If they are not, explain the difference rather than forcing a single ranking. The available cited material supports a comparison framework, not a current league table with matched thrust, Isp, engine-level cost, reuse, maintenance, and reliability data for multiple named engines.
