To find out which option costs less, compare the same meal, size, customizations and ordering channel, then check the full amount due before paying. A menu’s listed price is only a starting point: taxes, mandatory charges and delivery or pickup costs can change the total, while differences in portions or included sides can make two prices hard to compare fairly.
1. Match the order before comparing prices
Choose the meal and ordering method you actually plan to use. Compare the same item and size, with the same add-ons, substitutions and included sides. Dine-in, pickup and delivery may be different offers, so a restaurant’s dine-in menu price is not necessarily the price you will see for delivery.

Check the restaurant’s current menu alongside the relevant ordering platform or checkout flow. An item may be listed at different prices across channels, and an online menu may not be current. Use the price shown for the order you are actually placing rather than assuming the restaurant and platform match.

2. Compare the full basket total
Put the same items in each basket, then review the total before payment. Account for taxes and charges that apply to that order, such as a disclosed surcharge or delivery or pickup cost. Look for unavoidable or preselected extras as well as fees added during checkout. Keep optional additions, including a tip where applicable, separate from mandatory charges; tipping practices and expectations vary by place and service.

Rules for price displays differ by jurisdiction. In the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority’s summary on clear and accurate price information, updated 7 January 2026, says prices should be clear, complete and accurate so consumers can compare offers. It describes hidden fees or taxes added later as “drip pricing.” This is UK-focused guidance, not a worldwide rule.
In Australia, the ACCC’s price-display guidance says consumers should be told before deciding to order about restaurant and cafe weekend or public-holiday surcharges. It also says unavoidable or preselected extras must be included in a displayed total price. Apply that guidance to Australian orders, not as a universal legal standard.

3. Treat platform prices and fees as a separate comparison
For a delivery or pickup order, compare the platform’s displayed item prices and checkout charges with the restaurant’s own ordering option, if one is available. Compare the complete cost of the same basket in each channel, not just one dish’s sticker price. The cheaper item price may not mean the cheaper order once applicable charges are included.
In April 2026, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission sought public comment on whether food-delivery services clearly disclose total prices and fees, and whether platform food prices differ from prices for the same restaurant items. The notice is a request for comment about possible protections, not a final rule or a finding that all platforms price items differently. Read the FTC notice.

4. Compare portions and included items only when you can
A lower listed price does not establish better value if the dishes differ in size or contents. Check whether the menu states comparable serving information and whether sides, drinks or other components are included. If the quantities are not comparable or are not stated, say the value comparison is uncertain rather than estimating portion sizes or calculating a price per serving from descriptions alone.
Unit pricing can help compare differently sized products when quantities are known. Canada’s Office of Consumer Affairs explains this approach for food retail goods in its guide to comparing food prices by unit pricing. Restaurant menus may not give comparable quantities, so this is a cautious analogy—not a basis for inventing a restaurant portion calculation.

5. Make the decision on separate axes
Once you have comparable totals, weigh the factors that matter to you without turning uncertain information into a false-precision score:
- Total cost: the amount due for the same basket and ordering channel.
- Meal contents or portion: compare only what the menus state on a comparable basis.
- Convenience: consider whether delivery, pickup or dining in suits the order.
- Uncertainty: account for stale listings, unclear charges or missing serving details.
Local disclosures and rules can change what a displayed price includes. The UK, U.S., Australian and Canadian examples above describe guidance or a regulatory inquiry in those jurisdictions; they do not establish one worldwide rule.
