Capture the same product page state at deliberate desktop and mobile widths, then compare each screenshot with a reference made at that same width. Review every difference before updating a baseline: approve changes only when they are intentional, and treat unexpected changes as possible defects.
What a useful comparison checks
Visual regression testing asks whether a screen that was previously correct has changed unexpectedly. Applitools describes visual testing as checking that previously correct screens have not changed unexpectedly: Overview of Visual UI Testing. A screenshot by itself cannot tell you whether a change is a regression; you need a known reference image and a decision about whether each difference is expected.

For a product page, compare meaningful states, not just URLs. Keep the product and its content consistent, and decide whether the selected option, gallery image, availability state, or expanded sections matter to the test. Those details are choices for your own site and test case, not a prescribed checklist from the tools cited here.
Set up the comparison so it is reproducible
Choose responsive widths deliberately
Capture the mobile and desktop sizes your site supports, plus intermediate widths where its layout changes. Percy documents configuring responsive breakpoint widths and rendering the same page at each width. Its documentation uses 375 px and 1280 px as an example only; they are not universal breakpoint recommendations. Each configured width counts as a separate screenshot toward Percy’s monthly usage. See Percy responsive testing documentation.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Applitools describes checking mobile, tablet, and desktop breakpoints in one test. Include only the widths that answer a real question about your layout: for example, a transition from a stacked gallery and details column to a side-by-side desktop composition.
Keep the capture environment consistent
Use the same browser version and execution environment for the reference and later captures. Playwright cautions that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors; its documentation advises running comparisons in the same environment used to create the baseline. See Playwright visual comparisons.

- 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly
- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter
Responsive layout and browser compatibility are separate dimensions. First hold the browser environment constant while comparing viewport sizes. If you also need cross-browser coverage, add browser engines as a separate axis rather than attributing their rendering differences to the responsive layout.

- Fix the page state. Select the product and any option, image, availability state, or disclosure state relevant to the test. Ensure the same content is loaded on every run.
- Choose viewport widths. Set supported mobile and desktop sizes, and add intermediate widths where the page changes composition.
- Capture a reference at every width. Save a distinct baseline for each viewport. A mobile composition and a desktop composition are not pixel-identical counterparts; compare each new image only with its matching viewport reference.
- Repeat under the same conditions. Use the same browser version, operating environment, and page state so environmental rendering noise is less likely to look like a product change.
- Inspect the visual diff. Check whether changes affect the gallery, product details, controls, price, availability, or spacing in a way that harms the intended layout. A diff flags a difference; it does not determine whether that difference is correct.
- Make an explicit baseline decision. Accept and update a reference only for an intentional change. Reject and report differences that reveal a defect. Playwright supports updating snapshots with its update-snapshots option, but running an update is a maintenance action, not proof that the new screen is correct. Applitools documents accepting intentional changes and rejecting bug-indicating differences in its visual testing overview.
Choose a workflow that fits your team
There is no universal winner established by the product documentation. Start with the simplest workflow your team already supports; consider a managed visual-testing service when its responsive rendering or review controls address a demonstrated need.

| Approach | What the documentation describes | Useful when | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright Test | toHaveScreenshot() creates reference screenshots on the first run and compares later runs; threshold and maximum-different-pixel options are documented. |
Your team already runs Playwright tests and wants screenshot assertions in that workflow. | Keep baseline and comparison runs in the same environment to limit rendering noise. Playwright documentation. |
| BrowserStack Percy | Configurable responsive widths render the same page at each width from a DOM snapshot and page assets. | You want managed responsive rendering at a configured set of widths. | Each width counts as one screenshot toward monthly usage; confirm current plans and terms directly. Percy documentation. |
| Applitools Eyes | The vendor describes baseline acceptance and rejection, breakpoint testing across mobile, tablet, and desktop, and integrations with Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, and Appium. | You need the documented breakpoint and baseline-review workflow or an integration with one of those frameworks. | These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent performance comparisons. Overview and responsive design information. |
When deciding, check framework compatibility, whether you need viewport resizing or real browser/device rendering, how each width affects usage, how dynamic page regions are handled, and how reviewers accept changes or reject defects. Product documentation establishes features, not a comparative accuracy, speed, or effectiveness ranking.
Troubleshoot noisy or misleading differences
- Most of the screenshot changes between runs: verify the browser version and execution environment match the baseline run. Host OS, hardware, headless mode, and other settings can affect rendering.
- Mobile appears to be compared with desktop: check that the test selects the baseline for the exact viewport under test. Maintain separate references for each responsive width.
- A large diff follows a page-state change: confirm the same product, option, gallery image, availability, and expanded content were used in both captures.
- A baseline update seems to make the test pass: inspect the diff first. Updating snapshots records the new appearance; it does not validate that the layout is intentional or correct.
- Usage is higher than expected in Percy: count the configured widths as separate screenshots and check current plan terms with the provider.
Or skip the browser setup
For a one-call capture, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from a URL. Capture the same product URL and viewport conditions for each reference and comparison image; this capture alone does not perform a visual diff or approve a baseline.
