Compare the Prime Day price with the exact product’s own recent price history—not just its crossed-out price or advertised discount. A chart can show whether today’s offer is low relative to the item’s recent pattern, but it cannot prove the price is an all-time low or the best price at every retailer.
Check the price history for the exact item
Start by making sure the history belongs to the offer you are considering. A chart for a different size, model, color, bundle, seller, or marketplace may not describe the price on your screen.

- Match the listing. Confirm the product’s model and variant, the selected seller and marketplace, and any bundle or quantity differences.
- Open the price history. Amazon says shoppers may see 30-, 90-, and 365-day histories on product pages. The 365-day view is rolling out, and availability can vary by market and item, so use the windows actually shown for that listing. Amazon’s price-history feature describes the feature and its intended use.
- Compare the current price with the chart. Look at the recent line and lows. A price at or near a low in the displayed period is stronger evidence of a deal than a large discount percentage alone.
- Check multiple windows if available. A 30-day chart gives a recent snapshot; a longer view can reveal price changes that a short window misses. History describes past prices—it does not predict when the price will rise or fall next.
Amazon describes its price-history tool as a way to ask whether an item is at its lowest price recently. Its feature page says more than 50 million customers have used price history; that is Amazon’s usage figure, not evidence that a particular offer is worthwhile.

Understand Amazon’s reference-price labels
A crossed-out reference price is not the same as the product’s usual recent price. Amazon distinguishes List Price, which it describes as a validated suggested retail price or MSRP, from Typical Price or “Was” Price, which is based on what customers recently paid on Amazon. Those labels can make a discount easier to read, but your own benchmark should be the item’s actual price pattern.

In a seller announcement, Amazon said that, effective April 23, 2026, it would validate List Prices, and that, effective May 18, 2026, Typical Price would be calculated as the median non-promotional price paid over the prior 90 days. Amazon also says the product-page history graph shows the lowest Featured Offer price each day. These are Amazon’s stated methods and dates, not a universal definition of a regular price; see Amazon’s reference-price update.
Amazon says its deals aim to be the lowest in at least the last 30 days. That event-level aim does not establish that a specific product is attractively priced against its longer history. Likewise, Amazon reported that more than 80% of deals during its most recent Prime Day were at Amazon’s lowest price of the year so far. That is Amazon’s own event-wide figure, not independent evidence or a guarantee about an individual listing. Amazon’s Prime Day page provides its event statements.

Compare the total offer, not just the markdown
Once you have the item’s history, check whether the offer makes sense for your purchase:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Use the same price basis. A displayed offer price may not include shipping, a coupon, a membership requirement, or other checkout costs. Compare the amount you would actually pay.
- Check another retailer when useful. Compare the same model and configuration, including delivery cost and seller conditions. A low point on Amazon’s chart does not prove Amazon has the lowest current price elsewhere.
- Separate a recent low from a record low. A 30-day low means low within that displayed period; it does not mean the item has never been cheaper. Even a longer chart covers only its stated window.
The distinction between a real prior price and an inflated comparison also matters beyond shopping tools. The Federal Trade Commission’s former-price guidance says a comparison is legitimate when the former price was a bona fide price offered regularly for a reasonably substantial period, and cautions against an artificial price set to make a markdown look larger. This is general U.S. consumer-protection guidance, not a legal finding about any particular Amazon listing. The FTC-hosted Federal Trade Commission Decisions, Volume 66 reproduces Guide I—Former Price Comparisons.

Use price trackers and alerts with care
Third-party trackers can provide another view of Amazon prices. Keepa says it tracks Amazon products and offers price-history charts and price-drop alerts. Its chart should not automatically be treated as equivalent to Amazon’s daily lowest Featured Offer graph: the available descriptions do not establish that both services record the same price type. Check the tracker’s marketplace and product coverage and what its chart represents before comparing it with the listing. Keepa describes its tracking features.
If the current offer is not compelling, an alert can help you wait rather than buy solely because a countdown or discount label creates urgency. Amazon says shoppers can create target-price alerts, and Keepa offers price-drop alerts. An alert signals a price change or target—not that the resulting price is objectively the best one.
