Record when you checked: a price can move, but a change alone does not show why it happened or prove that it was misleading.
Compare equivalent offers, not just similar-looking listings
Start by confirming that each offer is for the same product and purchase conditions. A different size, color, configuration, condition, seller, or fulfillment method can make a lower displayed price a poor comparison.

- Match the product identifier and variant, including size, color, configuration, and new, refurbished, or used condition.
- Check who is selling it. A marketplace listing from a third-party seller is not necessarily equivalent to the retailer’s own offer.
- Compare delivery or pickup options, estimated timing, and return or fulfillment terms that matter to you.
- Write down the price and the time you observed it; changing offers can make a comparison captured at different times misleading.
Compare the payable total and discount conditions
A headline price or crossed-out price does not necessarily equal what you will pay. Include shipping and every known required charge, and keep conditional promotions separate from generally available prices.

- Do not treat a member-only or otherwise restricted price as available to every shopper. FTC guidance says a promotion for qualifying shoppers should not be presented as the price for everyone; the generally available total should be most prominent until a shopper qualifies. - For live-event tickets and short-term lodging, the FTC’s total-price rule requires upfront disclosure of mandatory fees. That specific requirement should not be assumed to apply to every product category. See the FTC total-price rule FAQ.
Use a comparison site or alert as a signal, then verify
The FTC recommends checking comparison-shopping sites that list sellers and notes that some offer alerts when prices change. These tools can help you notice alternatives or a movement in price, but check the retailer’s current listing and checkout total before buying. FTC advice on online shopping.

If you use a comparison service or tracker, assess its retailer coverage, alert controls, price-history depth, and privacy terms. No particular service is established here as the best choice, and a listing or alert is not a guarantee that the retailer’s offer remains available.
Why a retailer’s price may change
Dynamic pricing means adjusting prices rapidly or frequently in response to factors such as demand or inventory. The FTC says businesses may use dynamic pricing as long as pricing information is not misleading; a price change by itself is not proof of deception. Its guidance also distinguishes an offer available to everyone from one that only some shoppers can claim. FTC guidance on pricing practices.

The UK government describes dynamic pricing as prices changing rapidly and frequently in response to demand. Its June 20, 2025 update says transparency about why prices change can help consumers understand when a better price may be available. What individualized pricing findings do—and do not—show
FTC staff’s initial findings, reported in January 2025, describe personal information and online behavior—including location, browsing history, and activity on a webpage—as possible inputs to targeted prices or promotions. The findings establish that individualized pricing is a subject of scrutiny; they do not show that every retailer uses it or explain a particular shopper’s price change. If the same listing seems to show different prices, first check that you are comparing the same location, account state, time, seller, and fulfillment terms. Those differences can affect whether two displayed offers are actually comparable; an observed difference alone cannot diagnose its cause.

A practical check before you buy
- Match the exact product identifier, variant, condition, seller, and delivery or pickup option.
- Record the observed price and time, then add shipping and other known required charges.
- Separate the generally available offer from any price requiring membership, a code, financing, or another condition.
- If the purchase can wait, consult a comparison site or set an alert where available. Decide the total you are willing to pay before reacting to a countdown or claimed discount.
- Reopen the retailer’s page and verify the offer at checkout. For live-event tickets and short-term lodging, check the upfront total including mandatory fees.
