Use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion to create a reference image and compare later runs against it. Use expect(page) for a page-wide check or expect(locator) to check a specific component. Reliable comparisons depend on keeping the rendering environment consistent, stabilizing content that changes between captures, and reviewing snapshot updates rather than automatically accepting every difference.
Choose what to compare: a page or a component
Playwright Test provides screenshot assertions for both pages and locators. Pick the scope that matches the visual contract you want to protect.

- Whole page:
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('landing.png')checks the page screenshot. - One region:
await expect(page.getByTestId('checkout-summary')).toHaveScreenshot('checkout-summary.png')checks only that locator. Replace the test ID with a locator appropriate to your application.
A focused locator can make a test less sensitive to unrelated page changes, but it cannot catch regressions outside the selected region. A page assertion covers more of the interface, while also making more of the page part of the comparison. See Playwright’s PageAssertions API reference for the page assertion and visual comparisons guide for the workflow.

Create and maintain screenshot baselines
- Write the assertion. For example:
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('landing.png'). Use a locator assertion if the test is meant to cover just one component. - Run the test to generate the initial reference. On its first run, Playwright creates the expected screenshot. Its documented process captures repeatedly until two consecutive screenshots match, then saves the last one.
- Review and commit the baseline. Treat the generated image as a test asset: inspect it and commit it to version control so later runs have a reference to compare against.
- Run comparisons in a consistent environment. When a visual comparison fails, inspect the image diff to determine whether the change is a regression or an expected UI change.
- Update only for intentional changes. Run
npx playwright test --update-snapshotswhen a deliberate design change should replace the reference. Review the new image and diff before committing the updated snapshot.
The official guide cautions that rendering may vary with the host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Keep the host and browser configuration consistent between baseline generation and comparison when reproducibility matters. The guide does not identify one configuration as universally correct. Reduce visual-test noise before adjusting tolerances
First address the source of unstable pixels. The screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive captures to match, which helps with content that settles after page load. Playwright’s API reference also documents animations as disabled by default. These mechanisms cannot make genuinely changing external content deterministic.
Hide content that is outside the test’s visual contract
If a timestamp, rotating promotion, embedded iframe, or other intentionally volatile region should not be tested, remove it from the screenshot contract. Playwright’s stylePath option can apply CSS during capture; for example, a stylesheet could hide a volatile element. Keep the scope deliberate: hiding a region also means changes within that region will not be caught by that screenshot assertion. See the PageAssertions API reference for screenshot options.

Keep capture conditions aligned
Run baseline creation and later comparisons with the same host, browser version, settings, and headless mode wherever practical. Differences in rendering conditions can produce image diffs even when the application code has not changed. A matching environment reduces this source of noise; it does not guarantee that the application’s own dynamic content will be stable.

maxDiffPixels lets you allow a maximum number of differing pixels in a screenshot comparison. The snapshot assertion documentation also describes maxDiffPixelRatio and a perceived-color threshold for generic snapshot assertions. There is no universally correct tolerance in the cited documentation. A larger allowance makes a comparison less sensitive to small rendering shifts, but may also allow a meaningful visual regression to pass. Choose a value based on the change your test is intended to catch, and keep the allowance as narrow as that contract permits. Documented example values are options, not evidence of an optimal threshold. Do not use tolerance as the first fix for a flaky capture; stabilize the environment or exclude content that is intentionally outside the test first.
Diagnose a failing screenshot comparison
- The diff appears across much of the image: Check whether baseline generation and the failing run used different host operating systems, browser versions, browser settings, hardware, power conditions, or headless modes. Align the environment before changing the threshold.
- Only a changing region differs: Decide whether that content belongs in the visual contract. If not, mask or hide it for the screenshot; if it does, make the test data or page state stable enough to compare.
- The page looks correct but a few pixels fail: Inspect the actual diff and consider whether the discrepancy is meaningful for this test. Only then decide whether a narrowly chosen difference allowance is appropriate.
- The UI change was intentional: Run
npx playwright test --update-snapshots, inspect the replacement image and diff, and commit the reviewed baseline. - The test checks too much or too little: Reconsider assertion scope. A locator assertion narrows the comparison to a component; a page assertion includes the broader page.
Screenshot comparison versus screenshot capture
Playwright’s screenshot assertions are designed to compare a page or locator against a stored baseline. If the goal is instead to obtain a clean screenshot from a URL for documentation, monitoring, or another workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a separate screenshot API and MCP server—not a replacement for Playwright’s baseline-and-diff assertions. Its documented features include accepting cookie or consent banners and removing known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; these steps can be turned off. It reports whether a result was billed, and clean shots only are billed. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo.
