Then make the page state deterministic, keep masks narrow, and review every image diff before updating snapshots. A generous tolerance cannot rescue a capture that changes unpredictably.
Use Playwright’s screenshot assertion
Playwright Test provides toHaveScreenshot() for visual regression checks. On its first run, the assertion creates an expected image; subsequent runs compare new captures with that baseline. Use a page assertion for broader coverage or a locator assertion for a focused component or region.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('account page matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/account');
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Your account' })).toBeVisible();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('account-page.png');
});
test('navigation matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/');
const navigation = page.getByRole('navigation', { name: 'Main' });
await expect(navigation).toHaveScreenshot('main-navigation.png');
});
These examples assume the application is available at the configured base URL and that the selected heading and navigation exist. Replace the paths and locators with those for the state your test is intended to protect. Screenshot assertions run with Playwright Test’s runner.
Playwright’s guide warns that rendering can vary with the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Generate and compare baselines in the same pinned browser and operating-system or container environment where practical. Keep the Playwright runner and browser versions consistent with the committed snapshots; otherwise, a rendering change may appear as an application change. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guide.

Make the captured state reproducible
Wait for the state under test
Navigate to the intended route, establish the relevant application state, and wait for a meaningful readiness signal before capturing. The example waits for a heading, but the right signal depends on the app: use a visible element or other assertion that confirms the content being tested has rendered. A fixed delay alone does not guarantee that the page is in the correct state.
Control variable content
Use stable test data and control application-owned content that changes between runs. If a timestamp, rotating promotion, or other region is deliberately outside the test’s visual scope, suppress or mask only that region. Avoid broad masks or styles that could hide a defect the test should detect.

Keep the capture options deliberate
The screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive captures to match before comparison. Its documented defaults disable animations, hide the caret, and use CSS-pixel scale. Start with those defaults unless the test has a specific reason to change them. The API documents animations, caret, and scale as screenshot options; check the reference for the installed Playwright version before depending on an option.
Set visual tolerances without hiding regressions
Playwright exposes separate controls for per-pixel color difference and the extent of image differences. Use a count or ratio to bound how much of the image may differ, and tune the color threshold separately only when small color changes are acceptable for the UI.

| Option | What it controls | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
maxDiffPixels |
Maximum number of differing pixels. | Set a count when an absolute difference limit is meaningful for the capture. |
maxDiffPixelRatio |
Maximum share of differing pixels. | Set a ratio when the allowed difference should scale with screenshot area. |
threshold |
Per-pixel color difference accepted by the comparator. | Adjust only for small rendering or color variations you have reviewed and consider harmless. |
maxDiffPixels and maxDiffPixelRatio are unset unless configured. They can be set on an assertion or in testConfig.expect.toHaveScreenshot. Playwright’s documented pixelmatch comparator uses YIQ color difference and has a default threshold of 0.2, with values ranging from strict 0 to lax 1. That is a configuration default, not a universal recommendation. The appropriate limits depend on what visual risk the test is meant to catch; Playwright does not establish one universally correct tolerance. See the SnapshotAssertions API reference and TestConfig API reference.
Prefer a focused locator assertion when the page contains unrelated regions that would add noise. If you use stylePath to hide or alter volatile content, keep the stylesheet narrowly scoped and confirm that it does not conceal behavior under test. Playwright documents stylePath as available from v1.41; verify the option against your project’s installed version.

Review and update baselines as code
Playwright stores expected images in a snapshot folder named from the test file with -snapshots; snapshot names can also include browser or project context. When an intentional UI change requires new expectations, regenerate them with --update-snapshots, inspect the expected, actual, and diff images, then commit the reviewed baseline changes. Do not update snapshots merely to make a failing run green.

- Run the relevant visual test in the pinned environment.
- Inspect the actual capture and diff to determine whether the change is intentional or caused by unstable state or environment.
- If the UI change is intended, run
npx playwright test --update-snapshotsin the same environment used for comparison. - Review the changed image files and commit them with the application change.
Troubleshoot common screenshot failures
- Large differences across many tests: Check whether the baseline and current run use the same operating system, browser version, settings, headless mode, and relevant hardware conditions. Align the environment before relaxing tolerances.
- Only a small region changes between runs: Identify whether it is variable test data or intentionally dynamic content. Stabilize the data where possible; mask or style away a region only if that behavior is not part of the visual contract.
- The screenshot is taken before the expected UI appears: Wait for an application-specific readiness signal, such as the relevant heading or component becoming visible, before capturing.
- Snapshot files differ after a browser or runner update: Confirm the version change and review the images as a potential rendering change. Regenerate and commit baselines only after checking the visual result.
- A tolerance change makes the test pass but the diff still looks wrong: Reconsider the threshold or diff allowance. A permissive setting can accept meaningful regressions rather than fix nondeterminism.
stylePathis rejected or unavailable: Check the installed Playwright version; the documented option was added in v1.41.

If you need screenshots through an API rather than Playwright’s in-runner visual assertions, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can return a screenshot or PDF. It does not replace Playwright’s baseline assertions or diff review.
