Use Playwright Test’s expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() assertion, then tune two different kinds of tolerance: threshold decides how much a single pixel’s perceived color may differ before it counts as changed; maxDiffPixels or maxDiffPixelRatio limits how many changed pixels the comparison accepts. Keep captures repeatable and inspect the diff before loosening either limit.
Set a per-pixel threshold and an overall mismatch cap
In a Playwright Test, pass the comparison options to toHaveScreenshot(). This example allows up to 100 pixels to differ after applying the color threshold:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('landing page visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({
threshold: 0.2,
maxDiffPixels: 100,
});
});
The values are illustrative, not a universal recommendation. Playwright’s visual comparison guide demonstrates maxDiffPixels: 100, but does not establish one best tolerance for every application. Choose a narrow allowance that suits the page and review the resulting diff.
Understand threshold versus maxDiffPixels and maxDiffPixelRatio
These settings measure different things. Playwright uses the pixelmatch comparator; its threshold is a perceived color-difference sensitivity setting, using YIQ color difference. The documented default is 0.2, with a range from 0 (strict) to 1 (lax). A higher threshold can make subtle color differences count as matching. It does not mean that a larger percentage of the image may change. Playwright TestConfig API
#1 Best Overall
| Option | What it limits | Default | Best understood as |
|---|---|---|---|
threshold |
Per-pixel perceived color difference required to count a pixel as changed | 0.2 |
How sensitive the comparison is to color changes |
maxDiffPixels |
Absolute count of pixels allowed to differ | Unset | A fixed mismatch budget |
maxDiffPixelRatio |
Fraction of total pixels allowed to differ, from 0 to 1 |
Unset | A mismatch budget that scales with image size |
Set either a pixel count or a ratio according to what your team can reason about most easily. A count is straightforward when screenshot dimensions are fixed; a ratio may be easier when dimensions vary. Both cap the number of pixels classified as different after the threshold is applied. Configure tolerance for one assertion
Use assertion options when a page or test needs a deliberate exception:
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({
threshold: 0.2,
maxDiffPixelRatio: 0.001,
});
The ratio shown is an example of where to put the option, not a Playwright recommendation.

Set project-wide screenshot defaults
Use expect.toHaveScreenshot in playwright.config.ts to apply a consistent default across screenshot assertions. Individual assertions can still receive options where needed.
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
expect: {
toHaveScreenshot: {
threshold: 0.2,
maxDiffPixels: 100,
},
},
});
For the complete option definitions and supported configuration, see the TestConfig API.
Make screenshots repeatable before relaxing tolerance
toHaveScreenshot() waits until two consecutive screenshots of the page produce the same result, then compares the final capture with the stored expectation. This helps with transient capture changes, but does not make different machines or browser environments render identically. Playwright PageAssertions API

Playwright lists operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode among factors that can affect rendering. Keep baseline generation and comparison in a consistent environment where possible. If different platforms are intentionally expected to render differently, maintain platform- or browser-specific baselines as appropriate. Playwright visual comparisons
Control variation at capture time
- Animations:
animations: 'disabled'is the default. Finite animations are fast-forwarded to completion; infinite animations are canceled to their initial state for capture and resumed afterward. - Caret:
caret: 'hide'is the default and hides the text caret. - Scale:
scale: 'css'is the default and captures one image pixel per CSS pixel.scale: 'device'captures device pixels, which can produce larger images on high-DPI devices. Keep it consistent for baselines and comparisons. - Dynamic content:
stylePathapplies a stylesheet during screenshot capture and can hide volatile content. The option was added in Playwright v1.41; confirm your installed version before using it. - Masking: masks cover selected elements with a colored overlay. Mask only areas that are deliberately outside the visual test: a masked region is no longer being visually verified.
These screenshot options and their behaviors are documented in the PageAssertions API. Version notes refer to feature introductions, not to the latest Playwright release.
Review baselines and visual diffs
On the first run, Playwright Test creates reference screenshots if none exist. Later runs compare captures against those baseline files. PNG is the default snapshot format; the SnapshotAssertions API also documents PNG and WebP screenshot names, both lossless. The visual comparison guide recommends committing snapshot directories to version control so baseline changes can be reviewed alongside code. Visual comparisons · SnapshotAssertions API

- Run the test and inspect the generated actual, expected, and diff images when a comparison fails.
- Determine whether the difference is an unintended UI change, an unstable capture, or an intentional design change.
- Stabilize the page or exclude only genuinely irrelevant dynamic regions before raising the tolerance.
- For an intentional UI change, review the visual difference and then update the baseline with

For screenshot comparisons, use expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(), not toMatchSnapshot() directly; that is the guidance in the SnapshotAssertions API.
Choose a tolerance without hiding regressions
- Start with the documented
thresholddefault of0.2. Treat it as color sensitivity, not as an allowance for a share of changed pixels. - If a small amount of variation is known and acceptable, add a modest
maxDiffPixelsormaxDiffPixelRatiocap. Pick the form that makes sense for the screenshot sizes your tests use. - Run comparisons in a consistent environment, control animations and volatile areas, and inspect the diff.
- Keep the accepted mismatch narrow enough that a meaningful layout, typography, color, or content change still fails.
Playwright documents the controls and examples, but does not provide a universally validated tolerance value for every page or application. Visual comparisons · TestConfig API
Troubleshoot common screenshot comparison failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Many pixels differ on a developer machine but not in CI | Rendering environment, browser version, settings, hardware, power conditions, or headless mode differs. | Compare in a consistent environment; use separate baselines when the intended platform rendering differs. |
| Diffs appear in animated or blinking content | The page contains time-varying visual states. | Use the built-in animation handling or control the relevant state; mask or hide only content that is intentionally irrelevant to the test. |
| Images or layout differ between runs | Capture timing, dynamic page content, or resources may not have settled. | Wait for the page’s required state before the assertion and use the documented screenshot stability behavior. Inspect the diff before changing tolerance. |
| A few subtle color changes fail the test | The per-pixel color threshold is strict for those differences. | Check whether the color change is meaningful; adjust threshold deliberately rather than using a larger pixel allowance as a substitute. |
| A small changed area fails despite a suitable threshold | No overall mismatch allowance is configured, or the cap is too low. | Set a small maxDiffPixels or maxDiffPixelRatio after confirming the changed area is acceptable. |
| A test starts failing after changing device scale | scale changes image dimensions and pixel correspondence. |
Use the same scale for baseline creation and subsequent comparisons. |

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use maxDiffPixels and maxDiffPixelRatio together?
The cited Playwright documentation defines each as an available mismatch cap but does not establish a need to configure both; choose the cap your team can interpret clearly.
Does a threshold of 0.2 mean 20% of the screenshot can differ?
No. It is the documented per-pixel color-sensitivity default, not a changed-pixel percentage.
Which Playwright version added stylePath?
The PageAssertions API marks stylePath as added in v1.41; check your installed Playwright version before relying on version-specific options.
