How to Compare Phone Dimensions and Weight Before Buying

A practical guide to comparing a phone’s height, width, depth and weight, with screen diagonal kept separate and manufacturer measurement notes in view.

Compare each phone’s height, width, depth and weight—not just its screen size. Keep display diagonal in a separate column, check the exact model and configuration, and read the manufacturer’s measurement notes. These figures help you shortlist phones; they cannot determine which handset will feel comfortable in your hand.

Which phone measurements should you compare?

Record the body dimensions and listed weight for each exact model. Screen diagonal is useful for comparing displays, but it does not tell you the phone’s outside width, height or thickness. Manufacturers list display size and body measurements separately, as shown in Google’s Pixel comparison and Apple’s iPhone comparison.

Measurement What it tells you How to use it
Width The phone’s side-to-side body span. Consider it if the phone’s reach across your hand matters. Width alone cannot establish one-handed comfort.
Height The phone’s top-to-bottom body length. Consider it for reach and pocket length; your use and pocket fit are individual.
Depth The body’s thickness. Check whether the manufacturer’s figure includes the camera bump.
Weight The manufacturer’s listed mass. Compare it independently of the dimensions, since phones with similar outer measurements may have different listed weights.
Display diagonal The screen’s diagonal measurement. Use it to compare screen size, not as a substitute for body width or height.
Folded and unfolded dimensions A foldable’s size in each state. Compare both states rather than treating a folding phone as having just one dimensions row.

How to build a useful comparison

  1. Choose the exact phones. Record the model and generation, plus any region or configuration details the manufacturer distinguishes. A family name alone may not identify the right specifications.
  2. Put the measurements in one table. Record height, width, depth and weight for each phone. Convert units consistently before comparing. Keep screen diagonal separate.
  3. Read the notes beside the numbers. Check how the manufacturer defines depth and whether it says measurements vary by configuration or manufacturing process.
  4. Match the figures to your priorities. You may give width and weight more attention for handling and carrying, or height and depth for reach, pocket length or bulk. Those are personal priorities, not universal comfort rankings.
  5. Check a foldable in both states. Compare its folded dimensions with other phones as carried, and its unfolded dimensions with the way you expect to use the open display.
  6. If practical, handle the exact phone. Published specifications narrow a shortlist, but they do not establish how a particular phone will feel in your grip.

Check what the manufacturer’s numbers include

Configuration and manufacturing variation

Google’s official Pixel hardware specifications say, “Dimensions and weight vary by configuration and manufacturing process.” Apple gives a similar qualification on its iPhone comparison page: “Size and weight vary by configuration and manufacturing process.” Treat published figures as manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that every individual unit measures or weighs identically.

Camera-bump depth

Google notes that its depth measurement excludes the camera bump. If maximum protrusion matters for how a phone sits on a surface or fits in a pocket, the listed depth may not capture it. Check the manufacturer’s notes instead of assuming every brand measures depth the same way.

Foldable state

A foldable’s dimensions change when it opens. Google’s Pixel specifications report folded and unfolded measurements for the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, illustrating why a single row can be insufficient. Compare like states when you evaluate its carried size or open-screen footprint.

What the figures can—and cannot—tell you

Dimensions and weight make model-by-model comparisons possible, but they do not provide a universal threshold for comfort. The official specifications cited here do not establish an objectively ideal width, height or weight, or how likely a buyer is to prefer a particular size. Use the measurements to identify trade-offs that matter to you, then handle the device if you can.
