Compare the same flight or room across sites, then judge the full price, rules, seller and support—not just the first price you see. An online travel agency (OTA) may sell the booking, while another travel site may only compare offers or direct you to a separate seller. Confirm who will contract with you and who you must contact if plans change before you pay.
Start by confirming who is selling the booking
A travel search or comparison site is not necessarily the company that sells your ticket or room. Some sites compare offers or introduce you to another seller; others take the booking themselves. The distinction can affect which terms apply and where you go for help. Japan’s Tourism Agency advises travelers to check a site’s role, registration, contract form and conditions because these can differ and lead to disputes: Points to check when using travel reservation sites (updated July 1, 2025).

- Look for the seller or contracting party named at checkout.
- Check the booking confirmation and terms to see which company is responsible for the reservation.
- Save the confirmation, booking reference, accepted terms and contact details for both the site and the travel provider.
Make sure you are comparing equivalent offers
A headline price is useful only when the underlying product matches. Before comparing totals, line up the details that change what you receive.

- Match travel dates, departure and arrival airports, route and carrier.
- Check the fare class and ticket structure, including whether the ticket is refundable or changeable.
- Compare baggage, seat selection and other services you expect to use.
For hotels and other lodging
- Match the property, room type, occupancy and dates.
- Check whether meals are included and whether the cancellation terms are the same.
- Compare taxes and any required lodging fees in the price you will actually pay.
The US Department of Transportation recommends comparing ticket restrictions and optional-service costs as well as fares: Buying a Ticket. For lodging, compare the same room and conditions rather than treating two prices for different room products as alternatives.

Compare the full payable price, not the headline figure
Work out the total for the itinerary or stay you need. Include taxes, mandatory surcharges, lodging fees and any required service or payment charges shown before purchase. Add optional items such as baggage or seat selection only if you need them, and compare their costs consistently across sellers.
Some price-display requirements are specific to the United States. US DOT says displayed airfares must include applicable government taxes and fees and mandatory carrier-imposed surcharges. The US Federal Trade Commission’s FAQ explains that a known required fee for a short-term lodging stay must be included in the total price under the rule it describes. These rules have defined US scope; they should not be assumed to describe every country’s requirements. See DOT’s airfare guidance and the FTC fee-rule FAQ.

Read cancellation, change and refund terms before paying
Check the exact deadline and cost for cancelling or changing the booking, whether payment is due now or later, and whether a refund is returned as money or issued as credit. Also look for handling terms added by the OTA. Do not assume that the supplier’s policy is the only policy relevant to a booking made through an intermediary.

Know who to contact if something goes wrong
Support and refund routes depend on the booking channel and contract. Save the OTA’s contact information as well as the airline’s or lodging provider’s details, and keep your booking reference and a copy of the terms you accepted.
For airline tickets bought through an OTA or another agent, US DOT directs travelers seeking a refund to contact that agent. DOT also says the US airline 24-hour refund or reservation requirement does not apply to bookings made through third-party agents. This is US-specific guidance for air travel; it does not settle rights in other jurisdictions or rules for other types of booking. Read DOT’s refund guidance and check the terms for your own reservation.

Use a side-by-side comparison before choosing
Once you have confirmed the offers are equivalent, compare the practical differences—not only the amount at the top of the page.
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Product match | Same flight details or same property, room, occupancy, dates and inclusions. |
| Total price | Taxes, mandatory fees and required charges, plus any optional services you need. |
| Inclusions | Baggage, seats, meals or other services relevant to your trip. |
| Flexibility | Change and cancellation deadlines, fees, payment timing and refund form. |
| Seller and contract | The company named as seller or contracting party and the terms you accept. |
| Support and refunds | Who handles questions, changes, cancellations and refund requests. |
| Applicable protections | Rules relevant to your location, booking channel and type of travel service. |
A lower displayed price may not be the better offer if it leaves out required fees, has stricter terms or makes it unclear who handles a disruption. Choose based on the offer you would actually use and the contract you are prepared to accept.

Check for pressure tactics and treat insurance separately
Before entering payment details, make sure the seller is clearly identified, the terms are accessible, you receive written confirmation and there is a credible way to contact support. The FTC advises travelers not to pay before understanding the terms and cautions against pressure to decide immediately: Make it a scam-free vacation.
Travel insurance is a separate product, not a guarantee that every disruption or booking loss will be covered. If you consider it, check that the agency is licensed where required and review the policy’s coverage and exclusions against the trip’s actual non-refundable costs. FTC guidance covers travel scams and insurance agencies: Avoid Scams When You Travel. New Zealand Consumer Protection notes that comprehensive policies may cover non-refundable travel or accommodation costs in some circumstances, subject to the policy: Accommodation.
