There is no reliable universal graphics winner based on the consoles’ specification sheets alone. Nintendo lists Switch 2 output limits, while Sony’s original PS4 announcement gives a theoretical GPU figure; neither tells you how a specific game renders or performs. To compare them fairly, match the game, scene and mode, then assess resolution, frame-rate stability and image quality separately.
What the published specifications do—and do not—tell you
For the standard PS4, Sony specified an 18-compute-unit GPU rated at 1.84 teraflops and 8 GB of unified GDDR5 memory in its 2013 announcement. Teraflops describe theoretical processing capability, not a direct score for visual quality or a benchmark that can be compared one-to-one with another console’s output specifications. Nintendo’s Switch 2 specifications describe the screen and the console’s supported display outputs. They do not say that every game internally renders at the selected output resolution or consistently reaches its maximum supported frame rate. Nintendo’s Switch 2 specifications
| System and figure | What the manufacturer specifies | What the figure does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 built-in display | 7.9-inch LCD, 1920×1080, HDR10 support and variable refresh rate up to 120 Hz (Nintendo, 2025). | The internal resolution, frame rate or image quality of every handheld game. |
| Switch 2 TV output | Up to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, or up to 120 fps when selecting 1920×1080 or 2560×1440 output (Nintendo, 2025). | That a game natively renders at 4K, reaches those frame rates or remains stable at its output setting. |
| Original PS4 GPU | 1.84 teraflops, based on 18 compute units (Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., 2013). | A direct comparison of game image quality, resolution or performance against Switch 2. |
| Original PS4 memory | 8 GB unified GDDR5 memory (Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., 2013). | How a particular game uses memory or looks in motion. |
Sony’s 2013 launch announcement said the PS4 was designed to help developers create worlds in “smooth 1080p HD resolution.” That is a platform-level description, not a guarantee that every PS4 game renders natively at 1080p or sustains a fixed frame rate. Does Switch 2 run games at 4K?
Switch 2 supports TV output up to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, according to Nintendo. That describes the output signal limit, not necessarily the resolution at which a game renders its frames. A game may render internally at a lower or changing resolution and use upscaling or reconstruction before the image is sent to the TV. A 4K output setting alone does not prove native 4K rendering.
How to make a fair game-to-game comparison
Compare the same title on both systems, in the same scene where possible, and use equivalent graphics or performance modes. Identify the exact game version and update; a comparison without that context can conceal meaningful changes.

- Set the comparison conditions. Name the game, version or update, console model and mode. For Switch 2, say whether you are comparing handheld play or docked TV output; these are different display contexts.
- Separate rendering resolution from output resolution. Record the game’s internal resolution if reliable evidence establishes it, and distinguish native rendering from dynamic resolution, upscaling or reconstruction. Do not infer internal resolution from the console’s output setting.
- Check frame rate and stability. Note the stated target and, when measured, observed performance in the same scene. Include drops or uneven frame pacing rather than reporting only a peak or target figure.
- Compare visual details directly. Look at settings and effects such as texture detail, shadows, lighting and draw distance, then assess the visible image at the same display size and viewing distance. Keep handheld Switch 2 viewing separate from a TV-to-TV comparison.
- Keep other performance claims evidence-based. Include load times or similar behavior only when directly observed or supported by a cited benchmark; do not assume one console is faster from specifications alone.
Which console has better graphics or performance?
The answer depends on the game and the way it runs on each console. The published manufacturer specifications cited here do not provide matched Switch 2-versus-standard-PS4 game benchmarks, so they cannot establish that one system is always sharper, faster or visually superior. A defensible game-specific verdict needs evidence for the same title and comparable scene, with the game version, mode and measurement source identified.
