How to Compare Mobile Coverage Maps Before Switching Carriers in Canada

Compare the same places and network layers on each carrier’s map, then verify coverage type, phone compatibility, and plan conditions before switching.

To compare Canadian mobile coverage maps before switching, check the same exact places on each carrier’s map, select the same network technology, and separate the carrier’s own coverage from partner or extended coverage. Then confirm your phone and plan qualify. A map is a useful prediction—not a guarantee that calls or data will work in every room or along every stretch of a route.

Build a location-by-location comparison

Start with the places and routes that matter to you, rather than a province-wide or national coverage claim. Check each carrier’s map at the same locations so you are comparing like with like.

  • Your home, including the part of the building where you most need service.
  • Your workplace and other places you visit regularly.
  • Your commute, including the roads or transit routes you use—not just the start and end points.
  • Frequently visited communities, buildings, and destinations, plus roads you rely on for longer trips.

A shaded point on a map cannot tell you whether service will be continuous across a commute or road trip. Review the route itself and note any gaps or changes in the type of coverage shown.

Compare the same technology and coverage type

Match LTE to LTE and 5G to 5G

On each carrier’s map, select the same technology layer. If the map distinguishes 5G+ or another enhanced tier from broader 5G coverage, treat those as separate layers rather than comparing one carrier’s enhanced tier with another’s general 5G. Map labels do not mean every phone or plan can use that network tier.

Carrier maps change, so note when you checked them and revisit the maps close to your switching date. The CRTC’s Communications Market Reports — Current trends — Mobile wireless page says apparent LTE coverage declines from 2020 to 2021 reflected improved accuracy in providers’ estimation models. A change in reported coverage can therefore reflect a revised estimate rather than a real network withdrawal.

Distinguish a carrier’s own network from partner coverage

Read each map’s legend and terms; do not assume the same colour or label means the same thing across providers. Identify the carrier’s own network separately from extended coverage, partner roaming, or satellite coverage. Those options can have different eligibility or use conditions.

For example, Rogers describes Extended Coverage as available to select postpaid customers for limited occasional use. Freedom Mobile distinguishes a subscription area from a coverage area and describes Nationwide partner coverage. Check the current map and terms for the plan you are considering:

Check whether your phone and plan can use the mapped network

A map shows where a network may be available; it does not establish that a particular device and subscription can connect to it. Before switching, use the prospective carrier’s compatibility tool or ask its support team about your exact phone model and plan. Confirm support for relevant LTE or 5G bands, VoLTE, roaming where applicable, and any required software compatibility.

Some network tiers have additional conditions. Bell says 5G+ requires a compatible device and eligible rate plan. Freedom recommends checking VoLTE and software compatibility. Ask about partner or extended coverage separately, including whether your plan, device, roaming settings, or usage pattern qualifies.

Account for what coverage maps cannot show

Carrier maps are modeled representations of expected service, not a promise of service at a particular address. Rogers notes that actual service can depend on capacity, equipment, signal strength, topography, and environmental conditions. Freedom identifies terrain, foliage, capacity, and weather among factors that affect coverage and says it cannot guarantee service.

At an individual location, building materials, indoor layout, congestion, and your precise position can affect the experience. A map may show coverage near your home while service is unreliable in a particular room; a route may cross shaded areas without guaranteeing a usable connection throughout. Treat the map as a screening tool, especially where a missed call or lost data would matter.

Use national coverage figures as context, not a local verdict

National reporting helps explain the broader picture, but population coverage and road coverage are different measures from service at your address or along your route. The CRTC’s Canadian Telecommunications Market Report 2026 reports that 94% of Canada’s population had access to 5G. It also reports that mobile networks served over 100,000 kilometres, or 87%, of major roads and highways. The report notes that a year-to-year change in the road measure was tied to improved reporting and revised criteria for major provincial highways.

Those figures do not identify which carrier will work in a particular home, building, or road segment. Carrier-reported population claims have the same limitation: Freedom says its network covers 99% of the population, and Bell says its network covers 99% of the population. These are each company’s claims, not an independent comparison or evidence that a specific address is covered.

The CRTC provides downloadable LTE and 5G coverage data on its mobile reporting page. The Atlas of Canada Wireless Data Network map shows LTE and 5G availability across Canada for 2013–2024. Both can provide national context, but neither answers whether a particular room, device, or stretch of road will have dependable service.

Verify important places before you switch

  1. Make a shortlist. Compare the carriers you are considering at your home, workplace, routine destinations, and full commute or travel routes.
  2. Check matching layers. Compare the same technology tier and identify whether each location is on a native network or partner/extended coverage.
  3. Confirm eligibility. Ask the carrier whether your exact phone and plan can use the mapped service, and whether any partner-coverage limits apply.
  4. Ask about critical locations. Give the carrier the exact address or route and ask what type of coverage is shown there. A general population-coverage figure is not an answer to a local coverage question.
  5. Reduce transition risk where practical. If feasible, test service before porting your number or keep an overlap during the transition. A test at one location or time still cannot guarantee performance everywhere or under different conditions.

What is changing in Canadian coverage reporting

On October 2, 2026, the CRTC announced a new approach intended to provide more detailed local coverage information and a way for Canadians to flag places where reported maps do not reflect their experience. The CRTC says providers will supply more detailed information, which it gives to ISED for the National Broadband Map. Rollout is scheduled to begin with the next Annual Facilities Survey in early 2027; the approach should not be treated as fully implemented before then. See the Government of Canada announcement.
