To compare member retention fairly, follow the same group of members who were active before the stream launched and measure what share remain active after equal-length periods before and after launch. Report new joins separately: a rise in total memberships can conceal departures from the original cohort. A before-and-after difference describes what happened; by itself, it does not show that the stream caused the change.
Measure member retention—not viewing retention
Channel-member retention means existing members continue their memberships. Video audience retention means viewers keep watching a video. They are different measures, and livestream views, watch time, or concurrent viewers cannot substitute for a membership-retention rate.

YouTube’s livestream reporting includes measures such as views, total watch time, average view duration, peak and average concurrent viewers, and chat rate. Studio and the Analytics API also provide video-level audience-retention information. These can show whether and how people watched a stream, but they do not tell you whether members from before launch stayed members. YouTube’s livestream analytics help and Analytics API metric definitions describe these measures.

Choose a fixed baseline cohort
Set the stream’s actual start date, then define the baseline cohort: the members who meet your chosen active-membership rule on a specific date before launch. Use the same rule for the entire analysis. Calculate the share of that cohort still active at the end of each observation window. If your channel data supports it, you can also examine retention by tenure or membership tier; do not assume an overall result applies to every segment.

A basic calculation is:
Baseline-cohort retention rate = baseline members still active at the period end ÷ members in the baseline cohort × 100
Keep the original cohort as the denominator. Do not add post-launch joiners to it.
Use equal-length windows
Compare a pre-launch window and a post-launch window of the same length, with clear start and end dates. The appropriate length depends on membership volume and renewal cadence; YouTube does not prescribe a universal number of weeks or months for this comparison. Weekly observations can help show whether a change was already underway, rather than relying on just two endpoint totals.

Keep joins and cancellations separate
Report new memberships and cancellations alongside the retention rate. Total members at the end of a period are not a retention measure: new joins can offset cancellations and make the total appear stable or higher even as members from the baseline cohort leave.
Build a reproducible before-and-after comparison
- Record the launch date. Use the date the continuous stream actually began, not the date you planned or announced it.
- Write down cohort and membership rules. Specify who counted as an active member at baseline and what status counts as active at each period end.
- Set matching date windows. Choose equal-length pre-launch and post-launch periods. Save the precise date boundaries and any reporting filters.
- Check the pre-launch trend. Review available observations before launch. If retention was already falling, a continued decline afterward cannot be attributed to the stream on timing alone.
- Log other changes around launch. Record membership-price or perk changes, publishing cadence, promotion, major events, and operational changes. These could also affect membership.
- Present outcomes in a consistent order. Show baseline-cohort retention first, then joins and cancellations, then livestream usage measures. If supported, break out tenure or tier without implying unsupported results for other groups.
- Record extraction details. Keep the cohort definition, dates, filters, and the date you exported the data so another person can reproduce the comparison.
- State what the comparison can establish. Without a credible comparison group or design for estimating what would have happened otherwise, describe the result as a change after launch, not an effect caused by launch.
Use YouTube analytics as context, not as a retention proxy
Use livestream watch time, views, average view duration, and concurrent viewers to describe stream use. YouTube’s Analytics API can report concurrent viewers by position in a livestream and audience-retention measures for an individual video. These indicators help interpret reach and viewing behavior, but they do not measure whether the baseline members continued their memberships.
The API defines audienceWatchRatio as a ratio comparing views of a portion of a video with total video views; because a portion can be replayed, the ratio can exceed 1. relativeRetentionPerformance compares a video’s retention with videos of similar length. Neither metric is channel-member retention. averageConcurrentViewers measures concurrent viewers for a video or stream segment. See the YouTube Analytics API metric definitions.

YouTube notes that Analytics data is processed and despammed and measures different information from Live Control Room data. Therefore, figures from the two interfaces may differ. Where available, use Studio’s Advanced Mode to compare reports and export data; retain filters and dates with the export. YouTube has been gradually rolling out an updated Studio experience since July 2026, so interface locations may vary. Availability of specific data can also vary. YouTube’s livestream analytics help explains the reporting context.
New YouTube Analytics channel reports that included concurrent viewers and member cancellations were available starting May 6, 2024, according to Google for Developers. That availability does not establish that every channel can export member-level histories or a ready-made cohort-retention rate. If you have only aggregate counts, label the result an aggregate proxy: it cannot establish retention for a fixed group of members.
Interpret cancellations carefully
YouTube’s membership cancellation survey includes reasons such as financial reasons, loss of interest, dissatisfaction with perks, and inability to access or receive perks. These responses can help provide context for a retention change, but they do not explain the choices of members who did not answer. Nor do they prove that the 24/7 stream caused a cancellation or prevented one. See the YouTube Analytics API documentation.

What a before-and-after result can—and cannot—say
If baseline-cohort retention is higher after launch, you can report that it rose in the observed post-launch window. If it is lower, report the decline. Neither direction alone establishes the stream as the cause: seasonality, an existing trend, changes to perks or prices, publishing changes, promotions, and major events may also matter.
A more informative causal comparison would use a credible untreated channel or period, explain why it is comparable, and examine whether its pre-launch trends resembled yours. If no such comparison is available, keep the conclusion descriptive. No official YouTube source cited here provides a general retention lift, decline, or benchmark to expect from adding a 24/7 stream.
