Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCompare MCP tool inventories by matching each tool’s programmatic name, then diffing the definitions of tools with the same name. Report additions, removals, schema and metadata edits, and ordering changes separately. Before interpreting a difference, confirm both captures are complete and record their protocol version and authorization context.
What a saved tools/list response tells you
A tools/list response records the tools exposed in a particular request context; it is not necessarily a timeless inventory of everything a server can provide. A tool definition can include its programmatic name, description, input schema, and optional title, output schema, annotations, or metadata. The MCP specification also supports pagination, so a single page may not contain the complete inventory. See the versioned MCP Tools specification dated 2026-07-28 and the 2025-06-18 schema reference.

Capture comparable snapshots first
Preserve the original JSON-RPC response and enough provenance to interpret it. Keep secrets out of capture metadata, but record the authorization or scope context that determined which tools were visible.

- Server identity and capture timestamp.
- MCP protocol version used for each capture.
- Authorization or scope context, described without credentials.
- Whether every page was retrieved, along with cursor or page provenance.
- The raw response, including fields your comparison tool does not recognize.
Follow each nextCursor until pagination is complete before treating a missing tool as removed. The 2025-06-18 schema reference defines tools and optional nextCursor; the current specification describes pagination. If one capture is partial, classify the result as incomplete rather than claiming tools disappeared.

Compare the inventories by tool name
- Parse the saved responses as JSON. Ignore insignificant whitespace and JSON object-member order; do not discard unrecognized properties.
- Index tools by their programmatic
name. Treat this as the identifier for matching definitions, not the display title or description. - Compare membership. Names found only in the newer capture are additions; names found only in the earlier capture are removals. Check pagination and authorization context before attributing either to a server change.
- Diff shared names field by field. Compare descriptive fields, schemas, annotations, and metadata as distinct categories.
- Report ordering separately. A changed list order does not by itself mean a tool definition or callable interface changed.
Inspect edits to existing tools
Descriptions and titles
Report changes to title or description as descriptive edits. They can affect how a tool is presented or discovered, but are not, by themselves, evidence that its input contract or runtime behavior changed.
Input and output schemas
Compare inputSchema and optional outputSchema independently. A structural diff makes the exact edit auditable. If you normalize schemas to assess semantic equivalence, state the normalization rules and the schema dialect used; otherwise, avoid presenting a structural change as a proven behavioral change.
The 2025-11-25 MCP Tools specification says schema usage defaults to JSON Schema 2020-12 when $schema is absent. Apply that rule only in the context of that specification version; do not assume saved responses from every release share one unchanging schema shape. Consult the 2025-11-25 Tools specification alongside the version associated with each capture.

For example, adding a required input property may affect callers that do not supply it; changing a display title is a different kind of change. Do not label an edit breaking solely because a diff tool flags it.

Annotations and metadata
Show annotations and _meta in their own diff category, preserving unknown values for review. Annotations such as readOnlyHint and destructiveHint are useful signals, not guarantees of actual behavior. The 2025-11-25 specification says clients must consider tool annotations untrusted unless they come from trusted servers. A changed hint therefore merits attention, but does not independently prove that runtime behavior changed.
Interpret differences in their version and request context
MCP definitions evolve across specification releases. The 2025-06-18 schema reference lists a response with tools and optional nextCursor, while the 2026-07-28 Tools page’s example also includes resultType and requestState. Preserve the exact raw response and its protocol version; do not compare captures by imposing one release’s fields on another.
Rank #4
The current Tools specification says the visible set may vary according to authorization presented on a request, while it must not vary per connection or as a side effect of other requests on that connection. A difference between captures made under different permissions may reflect access rather than a deployment change. The same specification recommends deterministic ordering to support reliable caching, but order alone is not a changed tool contract.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A server can announce that its tool list changed when it declares the relevant capability and the client subscribes to notifications. Such a notification can prompt a refresh, but it does not make an old saved response current by itself. Caching behavior is also implementation-specific: OpenAI’s API documentation for MCP servers says an mcp_list_tools output item remains in the API request context without the API fetching the list again on each conversation turn. That is documented OpenAI API behavior, not a universal MCP caching rule.
Present the diff so readers can act on it
Keep the result auditable and make unlike changes easy to distinguish. A concise report can use categories such as:
- Added: names present only in the newer complete inventory.
- Removed: names present only in the earlier complete inventory.
- Definition changes: shared names with changed descriptions, schemas, annotations, or metadata, each labeled by field.
- Ordering changes: a separate note, not a definition change.
- Capture qualifications: version, timestamp, authorization context, and completeness status.
Retain links between each reported difference and its raw snapshot. This lets a reviewer distinguish a real contract edit from an incomplete capture, a permission change, a schema-format difference, or a presentation-only edit.
