Compare company guidance with analyst estimates only after aligning the fiscal period, metric, accounting basis, scope and timestamp. For a guidance range, retain both endpoints and use its midpoint only as a convenient reference—not as a prediction that outcomes are equally likely. Any gap is a reason to investigate assumptions and revisions, not a standalone investment signal.
What management guidance and analyst estimates mean
Management guidance is a forecast issued by the company. It may be a single figure, a range, a growth outlook or another description of expected performance. Analyst estimates are forecasts produced outside the company; a consensus is an aggregation of estimates, not one universal figure. As the CFA Institute and National Investor Relations Institute note in their Analyst/Corporate Issuer Best Practice Guidelines, “The magnitude of analysts’ earnings estimates or basis used may not match the earnings guidance provided by corporate issuers.”

Guidance commonly appears in earnings releases, investor presentations, filed reports or public earnings-call materials. Read the surrounding assumptions and risk language, and distinguish a formal outlook from an aspirational long-term goal. A forecast is uncertain, not a guarantee. CFI’s overview of guidance, published February 19, 2020, describes these common forms and channels.
Build a like-for-like comparison
Match the fiscal period and metric
Compare forecasts for the same quarter or fiscal year and the same measure. Check units and currency as well as whether the figure is revenue, operating income, EPS or another metric. A quarterly outlook should not be compared with a full-year estimate, and an EPS number is not comparable merely because both sources label it “EPS.”

Reconcile definitions and scope
For earnings, establish whether each figure is reported GAAP EPS or adjusted/non-GAAP EPS. Check share-count assumptions and which unusual, non-operating or other items are included or excluded. For revenue, verify company or segment scope, reported versus constant-currency treatment, and the handling of acquisitions or disposals. Analyst models and issuer guidance can differ in both basis and magnitude; explain the differences before calling one forecast higher or lower.
When a key estimate depends on accounting assumptions, consult the company’s MD&A discussion and relevant sensitivity information. The SEC’s 2002 MD&A rulemaking discusses the significance, assumptions, sensitivity and effects of critical accounting estimates. It is historical rulemaking material, not by itself a current compliance checklist.
Record how consensus was made
Identify the data provider or public source, the metric definition, estimate aggregation (such as mean or median), the snapshot date and, where available, the number of analysts covered. Consensus depends on provider, timing and methodology. TELUS’s November 2023 disclosure policy refers to the range and average of analyst estimates as an issuer-specific example; it does not establish an industry-wide standard.

Preserve the timing of each forecast
For an earnings-announcement comparison, record the analyst estimate immediately before management issues guidance, then track subsequent analyst revisions separately. Keep three moments distinct:
- Pre-announcement consensus: the estimate available immediately before the company speaks.
- New management outlook: the company’s guidance, with its period, basis and assumptions.
- Post-announcement estimates: analysts’ updates after considering the announcement.
Combining these timestamps can make an old consensus appear current or hide how expectations shifted. S&P Global’s guidance-versus-consensus methodology provides one documented event-time approach: it compares guidance with the median analyst estimate for the same fiscal period on the day before the announcement. That is a research method, not a universal definition of consensus.
Compare a guidance range without hiding its width
Show both ends of a range alongside the analyst estimate. The arithmetic midpoint—(low end + high end) ÷ 2—can make a quick comparison easier, but it discards the range’s width. It is neither a guarantee nor evidence that every outcome within the range is equally likely.

Use a table like this when reporting sourced company figures; fill every row with a consistent fiscal period and dated estimate:
| Measure and period | Management outlook | Analyst estimate | Basis and date | Relationship |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue, quarter or fiscal year | Point or low–high range | Mean or median, as identified | Currency, scope and as-of date | Below, within or above |
| EPS, same period | Point or low–high range | Mean or median, as identified | GAAP or adjusted; as-of date | Below, within or above |
If it helps, calculate the difference from consensus in dollars and as a percentage of consensus: (management figure − consensus) ÷ consensus × 100. State which management figure you used—such as the range midpoint—and whether the result is positive or negative. Do not calculate a percentage when the denominator makes it meaningless.

If consensus is above the company’s range, describe that relationship plainly: consensus sits above guidance. S&P Global uses “conservative” for guidance below consensus within its particular study method; the label does not prove management is deliberately sandbagging or that analysts are wrong. Guidance above consensus likewise does not prove the company will beat expectations.

Investigate possible explanations before assigning motives or accuracy:
- Accounting adjustments, share-count assumptions or different inclusions and exclusions.
- Different operational assumptions, information sets or forecast horizons.
- Company-specific drivers, stated risks and sensitivities.
- The history of guidance changes and analyst revisions after the announcement.
A lower estimate may reflect any of these comparability or timing differences. Read the company’s assumptions and relevant MD&A alongside the figures; neither guidance nor the distance from consensus alone supports an investment recommendation.
