If an M.2 drive looks cheaper than an SSD, the comparison is probably between two specific products—not between M.2 and SSDs as separate kinds of storage. Many M.2 drives are SSDs. To understand a price gap, compare the actual drive types, capacity, performance, seller, and date.
Why “M.2 versus SSD” is the wrong comparison
“SSD” describes solid-state storage; “M.2” describes a drive’s physical form factor and connector. An SSD can be an M.2 card or a 2.5-inch drive, among other formats. Dell puts it plainly: “M.2 is simply the form factor, the physical shape and size of the drive.” (Dell support guide.)

For a meaningful consumer comparison, name the products more precisely: an M.2 NVMe SSD, an M.2 SATA SSD, or a 2.5-inch SATA SSD. M.2 does not automatically mean NVMe, and it does not tell you how fast or inexpensive a drive will be. M.2 drives can use SATA or PCIe/NVMe, depending on the drive and host system. (Kingston FAQ.)

A lower listed price is a property of that product and listing, not proof that M.2 drives are inherently cheaper. Compare like with like: capacity, interface, performance tier, seller, geography, and the date the price was observed. Price per gigabyte can help compare capacity, but it does not capture sustained performance, warranty, or compatibility.

- MEET THE NEXT GEN: Consider this a cheat code; Our Samsung 990 PRO Gen4 SSD helps you reach near max performance with lightning-fast speeds; Whether you’re a hardcore gamer or a tech guru, you’ll get power efficiency built for the final boss
- REACH THE NEXT LEVEL: Gen4 steps up with faster transfer speeds and high-performance bandwidth; With a more than 55% improvement in random performance compared to 980 PRO, it’s here for heavy computing and faster loading
- THE FASTEST SSD FROM THE WORLD'S FLASH MEMORY BRAND: The speed you need for any occasion; With read and write speeds up to 7450/6900 MB/s you’ll reach near max performance of PCIe 4.0 powering through for any use
- PLAY WITHOUT LIMITS: Give yourself some space with storage capacities from 1TB to 4TB; Sync all your saves and reign supreme in gaming, video editing, data analysis and more
- IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption
- Capacity: Drives with different capacities are not comparable by their total price alone.
- Interface and performance tier: SATA and PCIe/NVMe are different interfaces, and products within either category vary. Headline sequential-speed figures do not guarantee the same result in sustained or everyday workloads.
- Seller and timing: Retail prices change, and an unusual listing may not represent the market.
- Warranty and product details: Check the specific model’s warranty and specifications rather than assuming that similar capacity or appearance means equivalent products.
Broad pricing summaries do not support a rule that SATA is always cheaper. SanDisk says SATA is no longer consistently cheaper than NVMe at common capacities, while IBM describes mainstream SATA and NVMe SSD prices as roughly comparable and notes that high-end Gen 5 NVMe models can cost more. These are general characterizations, not a controlled survey of every model or retailer. (SanDisk; IBM.)
Why current SSD prices need a date and model
Prices can move sharply, so treat a retail price as a dated snapshot—not a lasting benchmark. Tom’s Hardware reported that a Samsung 990 Evo Plus 2TB was listed at $113 one year earlier and $363.49 at the time of its 2026 report, a reported 221.5% increase. The report described selected retail prices as abnormal and said it could not establish a reasonable 2026 SSD price from them. That example concerns one model and capacity; it is not evidence of a general M.2 price trend. (Tom’s Hardware, 2026.)

When checking a price, record the model, capacity, seller, region, and observation date. A single listing cannot establish why one form factor or interface costs less across the market.

Check compatibility before choosing the cheaper drive
An M.2 card only works if the computer’s slot supports the drive’s protocol and physical size. Some M.2 slots support SATA, some support PCIe/NVMe, and some support both. Check the computer or motherboard manual rather than relying on the M.2 label alone. (Dell support guide.)

- This product has been replaced by our latest generation. Please search for the SANDISK Optimus GX 7100 NVMe SSD
- HIGH-OCTANE GAMING. Experience speeds up to 7,250MB/s read and 6,900MB/s write (1-2TB models), with up to 35% faster performance than previous generation.
- PURPOSE-BUILT. Designed for serious on-the-go gamers, with a PCIe Gen4 interface and SANDISK’s next generation TLC 3D NAND.
- MORE TIME TO CLEAR THAT CHECKPOINT. Built with laptops and handheld gaming devices in mind, with up to 100% more power efficiency over the previous generation.
- DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).
- Identify the supported protocol. Confirm whether the slot accepts SATA, PCIe/NVMe, or both, then match it to the drive.
- Confirm physical length. Common M.2 sizes include 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110; the numbers describe width and length in millimeters. The board or system may not have space or mounting points for every length. (Kingston FAQ.)
- Compare the right specifications. Check capacity, workload needs, sustained performance information, and warranty for the exact models under consideration.
- Compare current listings. Use prices from the same seller and region when possible, and note when you checked them.
M.2 SATA drives use the SATA interface in a compact card format; M.2 NVMe drives use NVMe over PCIe. Kingston gives 600 MB/s as the SATA 3.0 interface ceiling. That is an interface limit, not a promise of real-world performance for a particular drive or workload. (Kingston explainer.)
How to make a fair comparison
| Check | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Drive type | M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, or 2.5-inch SATA | M.2 describes form factor, not protocol or performance. |
| Capacity | The same usable capacity, or price per gigabyte | Total prices alone can mislead when capacities differ. |
| Performance | Relevant workload and sustained performance, not just headline sequential speeds | A peak specification does not describe every use case. |
| Compatibility | Slot protocol, drive length, and system documentation | A lower-priced drive is not useful if the system cannot support it. |
| Purchase conditions | Model, seller, region, warranty, and date | Listings and product terms vary and change. |
Which type should you buy?
Choose based on what your system supports and the storage performance you need—not because the drive is labeled M.2 or because one listing looks cheaper. If the computer supports both SATA and NVMe, compare specific compatible models at the same capacity and assess whether the performance difference matters for your workload. If it supports only one protocol, compatibility should decide the shortlist before price.
