To compare laptop performance usefully, start with the apps and tasks you run, then compare laptops using tests that exercise those same workloads. An office benchmark can help with documents and spreadsheets; a Lightroom or Photoshop test is more relevant to photo editing; and a video-export test is more useful for editing than a single CPU score. Treat each result as evidence about its specific test—not a universal prediction of how every app will feel.
Match the benchmark to your workload
Benchmarks vary in the work they perform. UL Solutions’ Procyon suite includes tests built around Microsoft Office, Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, and Adobe Premiere Pro. PCMark 10 groups tasks such as browsing, conferencing, app startup, writing, spreadsheets, creative work, and gaming. Use the closest match to your daily work, and read the result as performance on that benchmark’s particular tasks.

| Your workload | Useful comparison evidence | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Documents, spreadsheets, and email | Procyon Office Productivity or PCMark productivity tasks | Relative performance in the benchmark’s office workload, not every document or spreadsheet task. |
| Web browsing, video calls, and app launches | PCMark 10 Essentials | Performance on its browsing, conferencing, and startup workloads. |
| Photo editing | Procyon Photo Editing or PCMark digital content creation | Behavior on specified Lightroom/Photoshop or photo-editing tasks. |
| Video editing and exports | Procyon Video Editing or PCMark digital content creation | Export or rendering performance on the benchmark projects and settings. |
| Gaming or 3D graphics | PCMark 10 Gaming for broad context; game-specific results for the titles you play | A broad graphics or physics indicator is not a substitute for frame rates in a particular game at your resolution and quality settings. |
| Working away from an outlet | Battery-life results by scenario, plus plugged-in and unplugged task tests when available | Runtime under the stated conditions. Battery duration is not an application-speed score. |
Procyon’s video-editing score is based on export time for its specified projects; its photo workflow applies defined import, processing, and editing tasks. Those results are more relevant to similar work than a generic score, but they do not establish how a different project, app version, or workflow will perform. See UL Solutions’ Procyon benchmark descriptions for the workloads included.
Compare equivalent tests and configurations
A score is meaningful only in context. Record the exact laptop configuration and test conditions alongside it, and avoid comparing results produced with different software versions or settings. UL advises using the same application version across systems because updates can change results.

- Record the system: note processor, graphics, memory, storage, operating system, and laptop configuration. Cooling, display, power mode, and the maker’s implementation can also affect results.
- Record the test: note benchmark and application versions, workload, settings, and whether the laptop was plugged in or running on battery.
- Compare like with like: use matching app versions and settings where possible. Check a benchmark’s platform and edition support before treating scores from different operating systems as directly comparable.
- Read the detailed results: task-level scores can show whether a laptop’s advantage applies to your work; an aggregate score may conceal differences between workloads.
PCMark 10 reports scores at high, mid, and low levels, and its application tests have platform and edition support details. Check UL’s PCMark 10 documentation for the relevant test and compatibility information.
Use this comparison procedure
- List your apps and concrete tasks. Examples include opening a large workbook, applying a particular photo edit, exporting a video, or playing a named game at a specified resolution.
- Choose the closest test. Prefer a benchmark using the actual app and a similar workflow. Use broader synthetic tests as supporting context rather than as your only basis for a decision.
- Capture the test conditions. Write down each laptop’s full configuration, operating system, app and benchmark versions, power mode, and relevant settings.
- Compare battery life separately. For a fair runtime comparison, use consistent brightness and power settings. UL recommends factory settings, a fully charged battery, and a balanced or default power mode. Calibrate display brightness rather than relying only on the same slider percentage: two screens can produce different luminance at the same percentage. See UL’s PC battery-life testing guidance.
- Translate the result into your routine. Consider whether a measured difference would reduce waiting in a task you perform often. A large gap in a rendering test may matter little if your main work is light browsing and both laptops already feel responsive in that use.
Read battery results by scenario
Battery runtime changes with workload and settings, so there is no single figure that describes every day of use. Procyon’s battery profile includes scenarios such as video playback, idle, and office productivity. PCMark 10’s profile covers Modern Office, Applications, Video, Gaming, and Idle. Compare the scenario closest to your use, and keep brightness and power settings controlled; do not treat a runtime in one scenario as a promise for another.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
What benchmark results cannot settle
Even app-specific tests use fixed tasks and versions. A benchmark can help estimate relative performance on a similar workload, but it cannot guarantee the result for every project or future app update. For gaming, look for results in the specific game and settings you care about rather than relying on a broad PCMark gaming score.
Nor does a benchmark alone establish which laptop is best overall. The available test descriptions explain workloads and measurement methods; they do not compare particular laptop models. For a buying decision, weigh workload-matched results alongside the exact CPU, graphics, memory and storage configuration, battery behavior, and—where reliable testing is available—sustained performance, noise, and thermal behavior. UL describes Procyon as a successor for PCMark 10, while continuing to document PCMark 10; that does not make the two suites interchangeable or establish that one particular laptop wins.
