How to Compare iPhone Trade-In and Exchange Offers Before Upgrading

An iPhone trade-in estimate is not the same as a carrier promotion. Compare the net value after service requirements, credit timing, condition checks, deadlines, and early-exit rules.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the value you will actually keep—not the largest “up to” figure in an ad. An Apple trade-in estimate, a carrier’s market-value offer, and a carrier promotion paid over time are different kinds of value. To choose between them, calculate the net benefit after any required plan and financing costs, then check when credits arrive, when the old iPhone is due, and what happens if its condition is reassessed or you leave early.

The official program information discussed here is for the U.S. and was accessed October 13, 2026. Carrier promotions and eligibility can change or vary by account, so verify the terms displayed for your transaction before you buy.

What counts as the value of a trade-in?

A trade-in quote is not necessarily money you receive up front. The form of the value matters as much as the advertised amount: it may be a credit applied to a purchase, a gift card, a credit to an account, or promotional credits spread across device payments or monthly bills. Some value depends on completing financing or service requirements over time.

Separate the offer into two parts:

  • Device value: what the program says your specific iPhone is worth, subject to its model, storage, stated condition, and any later inspection.
  • Offer value: additional promotional value that may depend on eligible service, financing, line status, or completing other requirements.

Do not treat a conditional maximum as cash-equivalent value until you know that your device and account qualify and that you can meet the requirements for the entire credit period. Verizon says qualifying promotional value can exceed market value, but its support information also says some offers require keeping an eligible plan for the term. T-Mobile’s terms distinguish an “Offer Price” from a “Promotional Offer”; the latter depends on completing the offer requirements.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 17 Pro, US Version, 256GB, eSIM, Cosmic Orange- Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Compare the net cost, not just the trade-in headline

Use the same comparison period for every route. A simple way to organize the decision is:

Net offer value = value you expect to receive − incremental required service cost − other required costs.

Then compare that net value with the new phone’s price and the commitments attached to it. The incremental service cost is the additional amount you would pay because of the offer, compared with the plan you would otherwise choose—not automatically the full price of a plan you already intend to keep. If you would change plans only to qualify, include that change for the full period required by the offer. The official pages summarized here do not establish a universal plan cost or a market-wide trade-in value, so use the actual terms and prices shown for your account.

For a credit paid over time, record both its total and its schedule. A promotion spread across device payments may have the same advertised total as a one-time credit but provide less flexibility: the remaining credits may depend on keeping the associated service and financing arrangement. A value that is delayed, conditional, or lost after a specified event should not be compared as though it were an unconditional payment today.

Build a like-for-like comparison

Fill out one row for every route you are considering, using the exact device and account details for each. Do not compare one provider’s estimate for a newer, better-condition phone against another provider’s offer for a different configuration.

What to record Question to answer Why it changes the comparison
Phone being traded What exact model, storage capacity, and condition are entered? Apple says its estimate depends on the device, model, manufacturer, and condition. Verizon says market value depends on model, memory, and condition.
Value type Is this market value, a promotional amount, or a combination? A promotion may require conditions that do not apply to a market-value trade.
How value is delivered Is the credit applied to the purchase, device payments, a bill, or issued as a gift card or other credit? Delivery method affects timing, what you can use the value for, and whether it depends on future payments or service.
Required service Which plan, line status, or account conditions apply, and for how long? Any additional service expense reduces the offer’s net value.
Financing How long is the device financed, and what happens to credits if you pay it off early? Early payoff can affect promotional credits on some carrier offers.
Device deadline By what date must the old phone arrive or be submitted? A missed deadline can put the trade-in estimate or promotional eligibility at risk.
Inspection and revaluation Can the provider revise the value after receiving the phone? What choices do you have then? The estimate is conditional until the provider completes its evaluation.
Leaving or upgrading What happens to remaining credits or any device balance if you cancel service, upgrade early, or change the payment arrangement? A headline total is not the amount you keep if a triggering event ends future credits.

Use the provider’s current offer terms for each answer, not an earlier promotion or a general description of a carrier’s program. Where a term is not clear on the offer page, confirm it before completing the purchase and keep the offer details with your records.

How to compare offers step by step

  1. Identify the device precisely. Write down the iPhone model and storage capacity, then describe its condition as accurately as the offer flow allows. Use the same description for every estimate. Do not assume an “any condition” headline means every device qualifies for every part of an offer.
  2. Get the value for each route. Check Apple Trade In and the carrier offers you are actually eligible to use. Separate ordinary or market value from promotional value, and note whether an amount is an estimate or a confirmed offer. An estimate may change after inspection.
  3. Read the offer requirements attached to that amount. Record the required plan, financing, line status, device eligibility, and any other conditions. For Verizon, confirm whether the specific offer requires an eligible plan and, for an existing-customer promotion, whether it requires the traded device to have been active on a Verizon account for 60 consecutive days. That requirement applies to some offers, not automatically to all Verizon trades.
  4. Calculate the cost of any service change. Compare the qualifying plan with the service you would otherwise select over the same required term. Add only the incremental cost attributable to qualifying for the offer, while noting any separate costs stated in the offer. Do not call the maximum promotional value your net savings until this calculation is done.
  5. Map the credit schedule. Identify what is credited immediately and what arrives later. For carrier promotions, record the number or duration of payments if the offer states it, and find the terms for cancellation, early payoff, and early upgrade. If the timing or consequence is not stated in the material you have, do not assume the credit is immediate or unconditional.
  6. Check when and how to hand over the phone. Note the exact shipment or in-store requirement and deadline. Apple’s online process requires the trade-in to arrive within 14 days after the new device arrives for the estimate to apply. T-Mobile’s mail-in path requires the phone to arrive by the trade-in expiration date.
  7. Account for a changed inspection result. Find out whether the provider can revise the value, how it will notify you, and whether you can accept the revised amount or decline it and recover the old device. Compare the choices before relying on the initial estimate.
  8. Make the decision using the whole commitment. Compare the net value, credit timing, service and financing obligations, deadlines, and ability to change plans. Choose the offer whose conditions you are willing and able to meet—not simply the one with the largest advertised maximum.

How Apple Trade In applies value

Apple says the amount depends on the device, model, manufacturer, and condition. For an online trade-in, Apple says the process generally takes 2 to 3 weeks and the old device should arrive within 14 days of the new device’s arrival. The 14-day window is important: Apple says the estimate applies when the returned device arrives within that period.

If you pay the full price

Apple says it applies the trade-in credit to the original payment method after receiving the phone and confirming its condition, up to the purchase price. If the trade-in value exceeds the purchase price, Apple issues the excess as an Apple Gift Card. The credit therefore depends on the inspection, and an excess is not returned to the original payment method under the terms described on Apple’s Trade In page.

If you use monthly payments

Apple says the estimated trade-in credit is applied to the purchase price, subject to condition verification. When comparing this route with a carrier offer, distinguish the initial estimated credit from the amount confirmed after evaluation. Do not assume the estimate is final simply because it appears during checkout.

If Apple finds a different value

Apple says that if inspection finds a lower value, you can accept the revised value or reject it and have the old device returned, subject to Apple’s stated terms. That choice gives you a way to respond to a revised valuation, but the original estimate is still conditional. Read the terms governing the return before sending a phone whose quoted value is essential to your budget.

Apple’s carrier-deals page also presents carrier offers as another way to buy an iPhone through Apple and offers help comparing deals and transferring data. Buying through Apple does not by itself make a carrier promotion equivalent to Apple’s direct trade-in: compare the terms of the particular carrier offer separately.

How carrier exchange and trade-in promotions differ

Carrier offers can combine a device trade-in with financing or service requirements. The details are offer-specific; a general program page cannot establish whether a particular account or phone qualifies for a current promotion.

AT&T

AT&T’s trade-in page describes device offers, promotional cards, and bill credits. It warns that some bill credits can stop if you pay an installment balance early or upgrade early. Check the applicable offer terms for eligibility, duration, and the precise event that ends credits; do not infer the terms of one promotion from another.

In a September 10, 2026 announcement, AT&T advertised up to $1,200 off an iPhone 18 Pro with an eligible trade-in “in any condition.” That is a dated promotional maximum, not a guarantee for every customer or every phone. Before treating it as your offer, verify the live terms for the exact trade-in model, plan, financing, line status, and credit duration shown at checkout.

Verizon

Verizon distinguishes the device’s market value from promotional value. Its iPhone trade-in FAQ says market-value trades can be paid with a Verizon gift card or PayPal credit. For promotional value, Verizon says the amount is broken out over the new-device contract and deducted from device payments.

  • The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.

Verizon support says some offers require an eligible plan. It also says some existing-customer offers require the traded phone to have been active on a Verizon account for 60 consecutive days. Promotional credits may stop if service is canceled, the device is paid off early, or an early upgrade occurs. Those conditions are not a universal checklist for every offer: verify which ones apply to the specific promotion you are considering.

T-Mobile

T-Mobile’s general trade-in terms, effective October 30, 2024, distinguish an “Offer Price” for buying a device from a “Promotional Offer.” Depending on the transaction and offer, credits may apply to a financing plan, down payment, a new-device or accessory purchase, or the account bill. This makes it especially important to record where the value will appear rather than writing down only a total.

For mail-in trade-ins, T-Mobile says the phone must arrive by the expiration date and be validated. After evaluation, T-Mobile may adjust the price or promotional eligibility. Promotional credits depend on completing the offer requirements, so read the promotion-specific terms alongside the general trade-in terms.

Condition, inspection, and timing can change the result

Every quoted value should be tied to the condition you disclosed and to the provider’s inspection process. Apple says it verifies the phone after receipt and may revise the amount. T-Mobile says it validates mailed-in devices and may adjust the price or promotional eligibility after evaluation. These are reasons to preserve the offer details and allow for a possible change; they do not mean that every device will be revalued.

Condition standards are not interchangeable across programs. Verizon’s FAQ says qualifying devices may need to power on, have an uncracked functioning screen, and have Activation Lock turned off. Apple instructs customers to turn off Find My before trade-in. Meeting one provider’s listed condition criteria does not establish eligibility for another provider’s offer, and the detailed terms for the offer you select control.

  • Natural Titanium Design: Premium aerospace-grade titanium build with a textured matte glass back and Ceramic Shield front for durability and elegant styling.
  • Unlocked & 5G-Ready: Fully unlocked for use with major US carriers (supports eSIM) and future-ready 5G connectivity.

Plan the handoff around the stated deadline, not the date you begin the trade-in. Apple’s online deadline is receipt within 14 days after the new phone arrives; T-Mobile’s mail-in deadline is receipt by the trade-in expiration date. Keep enough time for the phone to reach the provider, and check the exact transaction instructions for any shipping or in-store steps. Apple estimates its online process at 2 to 3 weeks overall, which is a process estimate rather than a promise that every credit will appear on a particular day.

What happens if you cancel, pay off early, or upgrade early?

These events can affect the value you actually keep when an offer pays out over time. Verizon says promotional credits may stop after service cancellation, early payoff, or an early upgrade. AT&T warns that some bill credits stop after early payoff or an early upgrade. The applicable offer terms determine the consequences; do not assume that paying off the phone early preserves the unpaid promotional amount.

Before accepting a multi-month promotion, ask how much of the total is credited at each stage, what balance remains if you leave, and whether a change in service or an early upgrade ends future credits. If you might switch carriers or replace the phone before the credit period ends, compare the flexible value available through other routes against the portion of the promotion you could realistically receive. Treating unearned future credits as guaranteed savings can make a promotion appear more valuable than it is for your plans.

Which route fits your situation?

  • Consider Apple’s direct trade-in route when its stated credit and payment method suit your purchase and you are comfortable with inspection, the 14-day arrival deadline for an online trade-in, and the possibility of a revised valuation.
  • Consider a carrier promotion when you have confirmed your device and account qualify, the required plan and financing make sense for you, and you expect to stay through the period needed to receive the credits.
  • Compare a market-value offer with a promotion separately. Verizon describes market-value and promotional trades differently, and other carriers may also deliver value through different mechanisms. A large promotion is not automatically the better deal after service costs and conditions.
  • Get another current valuation if you need a benchmark. An independent resale or trade-in quote can help you judge whether a promotion is competitive, but compare the actual cash-equivalent amount, fees or conditions, and timing. No market-wide typical value or universal best carrier is established here.
  • Pause if key terms are unclear. If the deadline, credit schedule, plan requirement, or early-exit consequence cannot be confirmed for your offer, avoid relying on an assumed value when deciding what you can afford.

Final checks before placing the order

  • Confirm the exact iPhone model and storage entered in the offer.
  • Save the stated condition and quoted value, and distinguish an estimate from a final valuation.
  • Identify whether each amount is market value, promotional credit, gift card, payment-method credit, or bill credit.
  • Read the current offer’s plan, financing, line, and eligibility requirements.
  • Calculate any additional service cost over the required period.
  • Check what happens to remaining credits after cancellation, early payoff, or an early upgrade.
  • Write down the arrival or submission deadline and how the old phone must be returned.
  • Understand what happens if inspection changes the valuation and what choices you have then.
