Compare mining companies by project stage, reserve and resource quality, technical assumptions, normalized operating costs, capital needs, and execution risk—not by headline ounces, tonnes, or a single low-cost figure. A producing miner can be tested against reported sales, costs, and cash flow; a developer depends on feasibility assumptions and financing; an explorer may have a geological resource without demonstrated economic viability.
This is a due-diligence framework, not an individualized investment recommendation. Company figures change with commodity prices, operating results, mine plans, and reporting dates, so use the latest annual report, quarterly filing, guidance and technical report before making a decision.

Start with the company’s stage and metal exposure
Put every candidate into a clear operating category before comparing numbers. The same metric means something different for a mine that is producing today and a project that still needs permits, construction capital and a successful ramp-up.
Producer
A producer has operating history. You can examine tonnes processed, ounces or pounds sold, realized prices, cash costs, all-in sustaining costs (AISC), sustaining capital, operating cash flow and debt service. Results still need context: a quarter may benefit from unusually high grades, a temporary by-product credit or a favorable exchange rate.

Developer
A developer is advancing a project toward construction or production. Its economics usually come from a preliminary economic assessment, pre-feasibility study or feasibility study rather than an operating record. Focus on the study date, mine schedule, construction cost, sustaining capital, financing plan, permitting status, expected recovery and sensitivity to prices and costs.
Explorer
An explorer is proving geology. It may disclose measured, indicated or inferred resources, drill results and targets, but it may have no reserve, mine plan, permit or demonstrated operating economics. Do not compare an explorer’s contained metal directly with a producer’s sales, cash flow or reserve life.
Also record the main metal and ownership basis. A company may report a mine’s total production while owning only part of it, or show attributable production after applying its ownership share. Copper and gold figures must be kept in their own units: gold costs are commonly stated per troy ounce and copper costs per pound.
Separate mineral resources from mineral reserves
A resource is a geological estimate; a reserve is the economically mineable portion demonstrated by the applicable technical and modifying studies. The categories should never be merged into one headline number.
| Category | What to record | What it does—and does not—prove |
|---|---|---|
| Proven reserve | Tonnage, grade, contained metal, effective date and ownership | Highest-confidence reserve category under the applicable reporting framework; still depends on the stated mine plan and assumptions. |
| Probable reserve | Tonnage, grade, contained metal, effective date and ownership | Economically mineable with lower confidence than proven material; not the same as a measured resource. |
| Measured resource | Tonnage, grade, contained metal and whether it is inclusive or exclusive of reserves | High geological confidence, but material outside reserves has not necessarily demonstrated economic viability. |
| Indicated resource | Tonnage, grade, contained metal and effective date | May support mine planning or conversion studies, but is not itself a reserve. |
| Inferred resource | Tonnage, grade, contained metal and effective date | Lower geological confidence; cannot be treated as proven economic inventory. |
U.S. Gold’s SEC-filed technical report states: “Mineral Resources that are not Mineral Reserves have not demonstrated economic viability.” The same report warns that there is no certainty that all, or any part, of a resource will convert to reserves. Treat those statements as a practical screening rule: a large resource can indicate exploration potential, but it is not a forecast of production, revenue or value.

Check the reporting relationship
Read whether resources are inclusive or exclusive of reserves. Adding both totals without understanding that relationship can double-count the same material. Capture the estimate’s effective date, the qualified-person or competent-person basis, the reporting code used, and the project ownership percentage.
Read the technical-report footnotes
Do not stop at contained ounces or pounds. The notes normally identify the cut-off grade, commodity prices, metallurgical recoveries, mining and processing costs, royalties, taxes or other modifying factors used to define the estimate. These details determine how much material enters the reported inventory.
Test the assumptions behind the estimate
Reserve and resource figures are model outputs, not measurements independent of economics. Record the assumptions in a comparison sheet so that apparently similar projects are not treated as equivalent.
- Commodity prices: note the long-term gold, copper and by-product prices used for reporting.
- Recovery: capture recovery by ore domain or processing route rather than using one project-wide percentage.
- Operating costs: record mining, processing, general and administrative, transport, treatment and refining assumptions.
- Royalties and ownership: identify government royalties, streams, offtake arrangements and the company’s attributable share.
- Cut-off grade: a higher cut-off can reduce tonnes while raising average grade; a lower cut-off can add tonnes with more marginal economics.
- Mine design: where disclosed, inspect strip ratio, mine method, dilution, sequencing, plant capacity and mine life.
- Payability and concentrate terms: copper revenue depends on payable metal, treatment and refining charges, penalties and transport, not simply contained copper.
U.S. Gold’s 2026 technical report illustrates why the inputs matter. It selected $3,000 per ounce gold and $4.40 per pound copper, plus $35 per ounce silver, for resource reporting, while using $2,100 per ounce gold and $4.10 per pound copper for reserves. Those are project-reporting assumptions, not spot prices or forecasts. The report also lists copper recoveries of 22% in oxide material, 75% in mixed material and 90% in sulfide material. A recovery figure from that project must not be generalized to another mine or deposit.
Compare operating costs on a like-for-like basis
AISC and cash cost are useful context, but they are issuer-defined measures rather than interchangeable accounting facts. OceanaGold’s Q2 2026 results say its cash-cost measure “has no standard meaning under IFRS.” Barrick identifies copper C1 cash cost and copper AISC as non-GAAP measures and lists the components included in its copper AISC.

Normalize the unit and metal
Compare gold per ounce with gold per ounce and copper per pound with copper per pound. A gold AISC of $2,151 per ounce cannot be ranked against a copper AISC of $3.95 per pound; the metals, units, revenue structures and by-product economics differ.

Normalize the period and production basis
Use the same quarter, year-to-date period or full year. Determine whether the denominator is ounces or pounds produced, sold, payable or attributable. A company with a minority interest in a mine may report both total and attributable figures. Mixing them can make one producer appear artificially cheaper or more expensive.
Read what the metric includes
Inspect by-product credits, treatment and refining charges, royalties, sustaining capital, corporate costs, reclamation or closure spending and other adjustments. Then read the reconciliation to IFRS or GAAP. A low cash cost may exclude capital needed to keep the mine operating; AISC is intended to include sustaining items but remains defined by each issuer.
| Reported example | Period and basis | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Gold AISC: $2,151/oz; gold cash cost: $1,362/oz | OceanaGold Corporation, three months ended June 30, 2026 (Q2 2026) | Use only as that issuer’s reported quarterly gold measures after checking its definition and reconciliation. |
| Copper AISC: $3.95/lb; copper C1 cash cost: $2.47/lb | Barrick Mining Corporation, three months ended June 30, 2026 (Q2 2026) | Use only as the issuer’s Q2 copper measures; compare with another copper company on the same period, unit and ownership basis. |
These examples are snapshots, not a peer ranking or a forecast. A single quarter can be distorted by grade, recoveries, maintenance timing, inventory movements, exchange rates and by-product prices. Examine several periods and the company’s stated guidance where available.
Examine production quality and revenue mix
Production volume alone says little about profitability. For gold, record ounces produced and sold, head grade, recovery, realized price and by-product credits. For copper, record payable pounds, concentrate grade, recovery, treatment and refining charges, penalties, co-products and the share of production attributable to the company.

Then ask whether the mine is a single-asset business or a diversified portfolio. A single mine can offer concentrated upside but also concentrated exposure to a shutdown, permit issue or grade change. A multi-mine producer may smooth quarterly results, while adding jurisdictional, integration and capital-allocation complexity.
Separate sustaining capital from growth capital
Capital spending has two different jobs. Sustaining capital maintains existing production—such as replacement equipment, underground development, tailings work or plant maintenance. Growth or project capital expands capacity, extends a mine, builds a new operation or funds a major expansion. A company can report an attractive operating margin while requiring substantial additional project funding.
Build a funding checklist
- Cash and undrawn revolver capacity at the latest reporting date.
- Debt maturities, interest expense, covenants and secured obligations.
- Expected sustaining capital for the current operation.
- Construction or expansion commitments by year.
- Whether management expects project debt, streaming or royalty finance, joint-venture funding or equity issuance.
- Potential dilution if the project cannot be funded from operating cash flow.
Use the latest balance sheet and cash-flow statement rather than an old feasibility-study funding plan. A study may have been prepared under different prices, exchange rates or construction costs. Liquidity should be judged against the timing and size of actual commitments.

A step-by-step comparison workflow
- Define the comparison set. Record each company’s principal metal, producing assets, development projects, exploration properties, ownership shares and stage.
- Collect the latest filings. Use the latest annual report, quarterly results, guidance, reserve/resource statement and technical report. Note filing dates and the effective date of every estimate.
- Create separate reserve and resource rows. Enter proven, probable, measured, indicated and inferred tonnes, grades and contained metal. Mark whether resources are inclusive or exclusive of reserves.
- Extract assumptions. Copy the stated prices, recoveries, costs, royalties, cut-off grades, mine method, processing route, strip ratio and payability terms. Do not substitute current market prices for the assumptions used to calculate the estimate.
- Normalize operations. Compare the same metal, unit, period, production or sales denominator and attributable ownership basis. Record by-product credits and included capital.
- Reconcile non-GAAP costs. Read the issuer’s definition and reconciliation for cash cost, C1 and AISC. If a component is not disclosed, mark it “not stated” rather than assuming it is included.
- Test the capital plan. Separate sustaining from growth spending and compare the schedule with cash, debt capacity and likely financing needs.
- Map execution dependencies. List permits, infrastructure, community agreements, construction milestones, metallurgical risks and closure obligations.
- Run sensitivities. Ask how lower prices, higher costs, weaker recovery, delayed construction or reduced ownership would affect reserves, margins and funding. Use company-published sensitivities where available; do not present your scenario as a company forecast.
- Write the conclusion by evidence quality. State what is demonstrated by operating history, what depends on a study, and what remains unproven. Keep upside and downside conditions together.
How to interpret common comparison mistakes
“The biggest resource must be the best investment”
Not necessarily. Resource tonnes can include material that has not demonstrated economic viability, and conversion to reserves may fail because of grade, recovery, permitting, cost or price assumptions. A smaller reserve with funded infrastructure can be more advanced than a much larger early-stage resource.
“The lowest AISC wins”
Only after definitions, periods, ownership and included items match. AISC can differ because of by-product credits, sustaining-capital timing, corporate allocations and mine mix. Compare multi-period trends and the reconciliation, not one isolated number.
“Contained copper and contained gold are interchangeable”
They are not. Copper and gold use different units, processing routes, payability terms and market dynamics. Keep each metal in its native unit and evaluate revenue and cost assumptions separately.

A study is a model based on assumptions and a defined level of engineering. Construction inflation, permitting delays, financing conditions, ore variability and ramp-up performance can change the outcome. Check the study date and whether key permits and funding are in place.
“Quarterly guidance is a long-term forecast”
Guidance is time-bound and can be revised. Preserve the stated period, production range, cost range and assumptions. Compare actual results with prior guidance over time to assess execution, without treating past accuracy as a guarantee.
Keep the comparison current
Quarterly cost figures and company assumptions are time-sensitive. Refresh the file after each annual and quarterly report, a material technical-report update, a revised mine plan, a major financing, a permit decision or a significant acquisition or disposal. Preserve the reporting period, units, ownership basis and issuer definition beside every number so an old snapshot cannot be mistaken for a current result.
The most defensible comparison is therefore a structured evidence record: stage and ownership first; reserves and resources separately; assumptions beside each estimate; normalized costs with reconciliations; capital and liquidity; then explicit execution risks. That process does not predict a share price, but it can prevent the most expensive analytical errors before an investment decision.
