How to Compare Gas Prices and Plan a Cheaper Road Trip

A practical method for estimating fuel, comparing route-level gas prices, deciding whether a cheaper station is worth the detour, and reducing avoidable fuel use.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cheapest road trip is not necessarily the one with the lowest advertised price per gallon. Start with a realistic route, your vehicle’s actual fuel economy, the fuel grade it requires, and a price that is current when you stop. Then compare the total cost of reaching each station, including any detour, rather than comparing pump prices alone.

A useful estimate is:

Fuel cost = route miles ÷ realistic miles per gallon × price per gallon.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Run that calculation for the complete route, decide where a refueling stop is practical, and recheck prices shortly before departure. Fuel is only one part of a road-trip budget; the estimate does not include lodging, tolls, food, parking, maintenance, depreciation, or driving after you arrive.

AstroAI Digital Tire Pressure Gauge 150PSI, ±1PSI Accuracy for Car Truck
  • Accurate, Dependable Readings: Factory‑calibrated to ±1 PSI, so you can confidently match your vehicle’s recommended PSI (check the door jamb sticker). Ideal for monthly checks and road trips — consistent results every time, cold or warm.
  • Bright Backlit Display & Nozzle Light: The illuminated nozzle helps you find the valve stem in the dark, while the backlit LCD makes readings crystal clear in dim garages or at night. No more squinting or holding a flashlight.
  • 4 Measurement Units, One Button: Quickly switch among PSI, Bar, Kgf/cm², and KPA with a single press. No complex settings — just press and cycle to your preferred unit. Perfect for drivers who need multiple scales.
  • Broad Compatibility for Everyday Vehicles: 0–150 PSI covers cars, SUVs, motorcycles, and spare tires (often 60 PSI). Fits standard Schrader valves; just press on for a reading.
  • Auto‑Off to Extend Battery Life: The gauge automatically powers down after 30 seconds of inactivity, so the included 2*AAA batteries last longer. Always ready for your monthly checks without surprise dead batteries.
  • Route distance: Use the route you are actually likely to drive, including planned stopovers and any meaningful alternate route.
  • Trip direction: Decide whether you are estimating one way or round trip. A one-way result can understate the amount of fuel you will need if you return by car.
  • Vehicle fuel economy: Use a make-and-model value as a starting point, then adjust for your vehicle’s observed fuel economy, passengers, cargo, weather, traffic, and the mix of city and highway driving.
  • Fuel type and grade: Follow the owner’s manual and the fuel-door label. A station’s lowest price is irrelevant if it is for a grade your vehicle should not use.
  • Current station prices: A displayed price is time-sensitive. Check its date or recency and verify it again close to departure.
  • Tank and range constraints: Know your approximate usable range and leave a reserve for traffic, weather, detours, and stations that are closed or out of fuel.

Do not substitute a vehicle’s laboratory rating for what it normally achieves on your route without considering conditions. A heavily loaded vehicle, roof cargo, stop-and-go traffic, hills, cold weather, or high speeds can all change consumption.

Step 1: Build the actual route and stops

Use the route you intend to drive

Enter the origin and destination in a route planner, then add rest areas, overnight locations, charging or fuel stops, attractions, and other planned stopovers. AAA TripTik describes routes with up to 25 stopovers and station listings along the route. A route with a lower mileage total may still be slower or less useful if it removes a stop you need.

Record the route miles shown by the planner. If you are comparing two routes, keep the vehicle, fuel price, and driving assumptions the same so that the difference comes from the route rather than the calculator settings.

Plan around a sensible fuel window

Do not wait until the fuel warning light appears in an unfamiliar area. Mark several stations within a reasonable distance of the route and identify a backup. A station five miles away may be a better choice than one with a slightly lower price that requires a long exit, queue, or return trip.

When a route crosses regions with different prices, plan the decision points rather than assuming the cheapest state or town is always worth reaching. A stop that is convenient on the outbound leg may not be useful on the return if your route, traffic, or opening hours differ.

Step 2: Estimate gallons and fuel cost

Use a calculator with the right inputs

GasBuddy’s documented Trip Cost Calculator workflow asks for origin and destination, one-way or round-trip travel, U.S. or metric units, a vehicle or manually entered city and highway economy, tank size, and fuel type. If your vehicle is not listed, enter reasonable city and highway figures rather than leaving the calculator to make an assumption you cannot check.

AAA’s Gas Cost Calculator accepts an origin and destination plus a vehicle make, year, and model or an MPG value. It reports miles, gallons used, MPG, and fuel cost, and offers comparisons for the starting location, destination, and national average. AAA identifies OPIS as the price-data provider for that calculator.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s FuelEconomy.gov Trip Calculator supports route and vehicle-model comparisons and allows you to personalize fuel prices and the city/highway share. The agency describes it as a way to compare fuel costs for specific routes and different vehicle models.

  1. Divide route miles by realistic MPG to estimate gallons.
  2. Multiply estimated gallons by the price per gallon for the required fuel grade.
  3. For a round trip, use the full round-trip mileage unless you are deliberately modeling different prices or conditions on each leg.
  4. Keep a small reserve rather than planning to consume every gallon in the tank.

For an illustrative, non-current example, a 400-mile one-way trip at 30 MPG uses about 13.3 gallons. At a hypothetical $3.50 per gallon, the modeled fuel cost is about $46.67. That number changes immediately if the route, MPG, fuel grade, or pump price changes; it is not a forecast of today’s prices.

Account for city and highway driving

A single combined MPG number can conceal a large difference between an urban departure, a high-speed motorway section, and slow sightseeing after arrival. Where a calculator permits it, set the city/highway share to resemble the route. GasBuddy documents separate city and highway inputs, and FuelEconomy.gov allows the driver to adjust the city/highway share.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you have several months of fuel records, calculate your own observed MPG: miles driven divided by gallons purchased. Use a representative average, not the best tank you have ever recorded. If the trip involves unusual cargo, a roof box, winter conditions, towing, or extensive idling, make the estimate more conservative.

Step 3: Compare the fuel grade and station price

Match the vehicle’s requirement

Check the fuel-door label or owner’s manual before comparing prices. Calculator fuel-type selectors and station listings help you compare the right product, but they do not override the manufacturer’s requirement. Do not choose regular gasoline simply because it is cheaper if your vehicle requires a different grade. Conversely, do not pay for a higher grade unless the vehicle or manual calls for it; the pump’s higher octane number is not automatically a fuel-economy upgrade.

Use route-level station information

AAA TripTik describes station listings along a route with the grades offered and the latest per-gallon prices. This is more useful than looking at a citywide average because it lets you compare stations you can actually reach. Station-level information can still become stale, so treat it as a decision aid and check the price at the station or in the service shortly before stopping.

Write down the station, grade, advertised price, distance from the route, and whether it is before or after a planned stop. A small table or note prevents you from confusing a regular price with a premium price or a price at a different location.

Comparison item Why it matters
Required grade Only the price for the fuel your vehicle can use belongs in the comparison.
Price recency Displayed prices can change; a date-stamped or recently verified price is more useful than an undated figure.
Route position A station on the route avoids extra miles and time.
Practical access Easy entry, operating hours, and a backup station reduce the risk of running low.
Expected fill amount The savings depend on how many gallons you will actually buy, not the tank’s full capacity.

Step 4: Decide whether a cheaper station is worth the detour

A lower per-gallon price is only a saving if it exceeds the fuel and other costs created by reaching the station. AAA’s fuel-conservation guide specifically cautions against driving to a distant station to save a few cents.

Calculate the break-even point

Use this test:

Detour fuel cost = extra miles ÷ realistic MPG × detour fuel price.

Price savings = gallons you will buy × (price at the closer station − price at the cheaper station).

Worked example

Suppose you will buy 12 gallons. A station on the route charges a hypothetical $3.60 per gallon, while a station four miles away and four miles back charges $3.45. The per-gallon difference is $0.15, so the gross saving is $1.80. If your vehicle gets 25 MPG, the eight-mile detour uses about 0.32 gallons. At $3.60 per gallon, that fuel costs about $1.15, leaving roughly $0.65 before valuing your time, traffic, or parking. The detour may be marginal; a longer detour or a smaller fill would erase the saving.

For a large planned fill, the same price difference can matter more. For a nearly full tank, a two-cent difference usually produces only a small gross saving. Compare the gallons you need, not an imaginary full-tank purchase.

Include route friction

  • Use the total extra miles, including the return to the main route.
  • Allow for ramps, one-way streets, queues, and a possible second station if the first is closed.
  • Consider whether the detour changes your arrival time or causes additional congestion.
  • Do not risk an unnecessarily low tank to reach a cheaper location.

Step 5: Recheck prices before leaving and before the stop

Fuel prices are not permanent inputs. The AAA calculator is dynamic, and date-stamped snapshots can differ from one another; a national average shown on one day should not be treated as a timeless number. Reopen the calculator or route planner shortly before departure and check the relevant station again when you are close enough to make the decision.

Use the same fuel grade and location when comparing a new price with your earlier estimate. If the price has moved, update the gallons-and-price calculation rather than assuming the original total still applies. Keep the original estimate as a planning range if you need to budget, but label it as an estimate.

FuelEconomy.gov Trip Calculator Specific-route and vehicle-model comparisons, adjustable fuel prices, and adjustable city/highway share. Testing how vehicle choice, fuel price, and driving mix affect a modeled trip cost.

These tools answer different questions. An aggregate calculator can estimate the trip total but may not tell you which exit has a suitable station. A route planner can show stations but cannot make your MPG assumption realistic. Use the route and price information together.

Driving choices that reduce avoidable fuel use

AAA’s Gas Watcher’s Guide (2018) recommends several practical measures. They reduce wasted fuel but do not guarantee a fixed dollar saving on every trip.

Carry only what you need

Remove unnecessary cargo before loading. Keep luggage inside the vehicle rather than on the roof when that is safe and practical; roof-mounted loads increase aerodynamic drag. Secure anything carried inside so it cannot move or obstruct the driver.

Use steady speeds when appropriate

Unnecessary acceleration, braking, and high speeds can increase consumption. Drive at a steady, legal speed when traffic, road design, weather, and safety permit. Do not trade safety for a fuel target, and do not slow unpredictably on roads where doing so creates a hazard.

Set tire pressure correctly

Check the pressure against the vehicle’s tire-information decal or current owner’s manual, not the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall. AAA says under-inflated tires reduce fuel economy and can be a safety hazard. A digital tire-pressure gauge can help with a pre-trip check, but it does not replace the vehicle’s specified pressure or a professional inspection when a tire is damaged or repeatedly loses air.

How to budget the result without overstating precision

Separate the modeled fuel total from the full cost of the trip. Your fuel estimate answers, “How much might this route and vehicle consume at this price?” It does not include tolls, lodging, food, parking, maintenance, depreciation, rental charges, or local driving after arrival.

Present the result as a range when the assumptions are uncertain. For example, calculate a lower-consumption case and a higher-consumption case using the same route and current price. Explain which assumption drives the difference. A range is more honest than a single number with false precision when traffic, weather, or pump prices may change.

A historical example: useful method, not a promise

The U.S. Department of Energy published a June 6, 2022 example comparing a 2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid with a 2022 Ford Explorer on a New York City–Grand Canyon round trip. The modeled scenario assumed 20% city and 80% highway driving and $4.07 per gallon for regular gasoline, and estimated more than $400 in fuel savings for the comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That figure describes those vehicles, that route, that driving mix, and that 2022 price assumption. It is not a current national average, a typical saving for every driver, or a guarantee that changing vehicles or routes will produce the same result. Use the example to understand how vehicle efficiency and trip length can compound; recalculate with your own route and current inputs.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Using the cheapest advertised grade

Problem: The price is for a fuel grade your vehicle does not require or cannot use as specified.

Fix: Confirm the required grade in the manual or on the fuel-door label, then compare only that grade.

Comparing a city average with a route station

Problem: A citywide or national average does not tell you what a reachable station charges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: Use route-level station listings and verify the relevant price close to the stop.

Fix: Identify a backup and refuel with a margin appropriate to the route and conditions.

Pre-departure checklist

  1. Enter the actual origin, destination, and planned stopovers.
  2. Choose one-way or round-trip travel deliberately.
  3. Set the vehicle or enter realistic city and highway MPG.
  4. Select the fuel type and required grade.
  5. Record route miles, estimated gallons, and modeled fuel cost.
  6. List reachable stations, their grades, prices, route distance, and backup options.
  7. Recheck prices shortly before departure.
  8. Remove unnecessary cargo and avoid roof storage when practical.
  9. Check tire pressure against the vehicle decal or current manual.
  10. Leave a reserve for traffic, weather, detours, and station availability.

The Bottom Line

Plan the route first, estimate gallons with realistic MPG, compare the correct fuel grade at reachable stations, and subtract the cost of any detour from its advertised savings. Recheck prices before you leave, keep a sensible fuel reserve, and treat every calculator result as a fuel estimate rather than the total cost of the road trip.
