Look at both the total you pay and the amount the recipient gets—not just the advertised exchange rate or a “no fee” claim. The provider’s exchange-rate spread, separate charges and possible third-party deductions all affect the outcome.
What to compare in a currency-conversion quote
Use the same transaction details for every quote. A bank transfer, card payment and cash exchange can carry different rates and charges, so a rate by itself does not make two offers comparable.

Compare quotes on the same basis
First decide whether you are sending a fixed amount or need someone to receive a fixed amount. If you are sending a set amount, compare the destination-currency amount each provider says the recipient will get after included deductions. If the recipient must get a set amount, compare how much source currency each provider requires in total. Do not treat “amount sent” and “amount received” as interchangeable figures.

For a transfer, note the amount you pay, fees and taxes, exchange rate, disclosed third-party charges, delivery estimate and expected recipient amount. The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) describes these as important comparison details for covered remittance transfers. Its consumer guidance explains that receiving this information before sending lets customers compare providers (CFPB guide to sending money abroad). These U.S. protections have a defined scope; requirements elsewhere depend on local rules.

Account for the exchange-rate spread
A provider can earn revenue through the rate it offers, even when it advertises no explicit transfer fee. The CFPB explains that an exchange rate offered to consumers often reflects a spread: a percentage difference between the retail rate offered to the customer and a wholesale rate. A current reference rate can help you spot a difference, but it is not necessarily the rate you can transact at. Use the provider’s actual quote and charges to make the final comparison (CFPB Circular 2024-02).
That is why “no transfer fee” does not automatically mean no conversion cost. The rate spread, taxes, third-party charges or withdrawal costs may still affect what you pay or what arrives.

Check fees and conditions that can change the result
Before choosing, check whether your payment method adds a charge. A card issuer may apply a foreign-transaction fee; a provider may charge for funding, conversion or payout. Also look for plan allowances, minimums, weekend or out-of-hours charges, rate-lock terms and conditions attached to promotional offers.

For example, Revolut’s UK Standard fees page says its exchange rate is variable and that fees or plan limits may apply; Revolut’s comparison page says fees can depend on plan, amount and timing. Check the live in-app quote and the terms that apply to your account rather than treating these pages as a universal fee schedule (Revolut UK Standard fees; Revolut transfer comparison).

Consider third-party deductions
The amount shown as expected at the destination may not be the final amount credited. A recipient’s bank or foreign taxes can reduce what arrives, and some third-party costs may not be within the sending provider’s control. The CFPB advises consumers to check for such deductions when a recipient gets less than the amount sent (CFPB guidance on a recipient receiving less than expected).
Choose carefully at an ATM or card terminal
An ATM or merchant terminal may offer to convert the transaction into your home currency instead of charging in the local currency and letting your card provider convert it. That is a separate conversion choice: compare the offered amount and rate with the card issuer’s route, and check the issuer’s fees before accepting.

Wise advises its cardholders to decline an ATM’s conversion offer and says its own card conversion uses the mid-market rate. Treat that as Wise’s guidance for Wise card users, not a guarantee that every card issuer’s route will be cheaper. Compare the actual quote and applicable card terms (Wise guidance on ATM currency conversion).

For cash exchange, compare the amount of cash you receive
When exchanging cash, compare each bureau’s buy-or-sell quote and any commission. For the same amount of home currency, calculate how much foreign cash you will actually receive. A displayed rate alone can hide a commission or a less favorable cash quote.

Recheck the quote before authorizing
Rates and charges can change with time, amount, payment route, location and account plan. Immediately before confirming, review the live screen for the amount charged, destination amount, timing and any fee warning. If the quote has changed since you compared offers, compare the updated totals again before proceeding.
