How to Compare DLSS, FSR, and XeSS Image Quality and Performance in 2026

Learn how to compare DLSS, FSR, and XeSS fairly: normalize versions, hardware, resolution, presets, scenes, and frame-generation settings, then measure both image quality and performance.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no permanent, hardware-independent winner between DLSS, FSR, and XeSS. The most trustworthy comparison uses the exact feature version available in the game, the same GPU and driver conditions, identical output resolution and graphics settings, and both still-image and motion checks. Measure native rendering, upscaling, and frame generation separately; record internal render resolution rather than assuming that matching “Quality” labels means matching image quality.

What DLSS, FSR, and XeSS actually do

DLSS, AMD FSR, and Intel XeSS are families of rendering features, not single fixed technologies. A game may expose several generations of a vendor’s upscaler, a separate frame-generation mode, and a low-latency option. The implementation, game engine, graphics API, driver, GPU architecture, and preset can all change the result.

Super resolution is an upscaling test

Super resolution renders a frame internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs it to the display resolution. When you compare DLSS Super Resolution, FSR Upscaling, or XeSS Super Resolution, you are evaluating reconstructed image quality and the performance cost of producing each rendered frame.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frame generation is a different measurement

Frame generation creates additional displayed frames between rendered frames. Those generated frames are not equivalent to rendering the same number of native or upscaled frames from the game engine. Report the rendered-frame rate separately from the displayed rate, and always state whether frame generation is enabled. A higher displayed count does not by itself prove higher input responsiveness; the supplied comparative evidence does not establish a universal latency ranking for these technologies.

Low latency and multi-frame modes need their own rows

Intel’s XeSS developer documentation treats Super Resolution, Frame Generation, and Low Latency as distinct features. Intel Multi Frame Generation is documented as an Intel-device-only feature. Do not combine any of these results into a single “upscaler FPS” number.

Define the comparison before changing a setting

A defensible test starts with a written matrix. Without one, a result can accidentally compare different game builds, internal resolutions, drivers, or quality settings.

Record these variables for every run

  • Game title, platform, patch or build number, and graphics API.
  • Exact upscaler name and version exposed by the game, such as a particular DLSS, FSR, or XeSS implementation.
  • GPU model, driver version, CPU model, system memory, operating-system version, and any resizable-bar or similar platform setting that affects performance.
  • Display output resolution, refresh rate, HDR state, and the game’s complete graphics preset.
  • Upscaling preset and the measured internal render resolution or scaling ratio, when the game reports it.
  • Ray-tracing, texture, shadow, volumetric, anti-aliasing, sharpening, and other image-quality options.
  • Frame-generation, low-latency, and variable-refresh settings.
  • The scene, camera path, weather or time-of-day state, and whether the capture is a repeatable benchmark or a manual run.

Choose games that expose the feature natively

Use titles that support the technologies in their own graphics menus. A replacement DLL, injector, or driver-level upgrade may be useful for a separate compatibility test, but it should not be mixed with a native implementation. A native FSR 3.1 option and a later AMD Software upgrade, for example, are different test conditions and should have separate labels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the same output and scene

Every contender must produce the same output resolution from the same camera position and motion. Do not compare one technology at 4K with another at 1440p, or a quiet interior with a foliage-heavy outdoor scene. If one preset cannot reach the chosen frame-rate target, record that trade-off instead of silently changing the target.

Why matching preset names is not enough

“Quality,” “Balanced,” and “Performance” are labels, not an industry-wide standard. Two games can attach the same label to different internal resolutions, sharpening behavior, or reconstruction models.

Measure internal resolution

Record both the display resolution and the input resolution used by the upscaler. If the game does not show the value, use its documented scale factor or a reliable in-game diagnostic, and mark the value as an estimate. A comparison that reports only “Quality mode” hides one of the largest variables in the result.

Intel’s documented XeSS scale factors

Intel’s XeSS SR guide lists version-dependent factors for XeSS 1.3 and later: Quality uses a 1.7× scale factor, Balanced 2.0×, and Performance 2.3×. These are Intel’s documented XeSS factors, not a universal map that can be applied to DLSS or FSR labels. Keep the factor next to the measured output and input resolutions in your test notes.

Item to report Example entry Why it matters
Output resolution 3840×2160 Defines the final image being judged.
Internal resolution 1920×1080, measured in the game Determines how much source detail the reconstruction receives.
Preset label Quality Useful shorthand only; it does not prove equivalent scaling.
Scale factor 2.0×, when documented or measured Allows readers to reproduce the input-to-output relationship.

Inspect image quality in stills and motion

A paused screenshot can reveal detail loss, but temporal errors often appear only while the camera or an object moves. Capture both a controlled still and a moving sequence for every setting.

Fine geometry and high-contrast detail

  • Zoom into wires, railings, foliage, hair, fences, text, UI edges, and distant geometry.
  • Check whether thin lines remain continuous or break into stair steps and dots.
  • Look for texture detail that is smeared, over-sharpened, or replaced by a repeating pattern.
  • Keep identical screenshot scaling and compression when presenting side-by-side results.

Temporal stability during movement

  • Pan across dense foliage and particles to expose shimmer and flicker.
  • Track a character or vehicle leaving a previously occupied area; this disocclusion test can reveal ghost trails.
  • Inspect reflections, transparency, smoke, rain, hair, and alpha-tested vegetation.
  • Watch bright signs and thin geometry while rotating the camera slowly and quickly.

UI, text, and motion clarity

Check whether HUD text and subtitles remain stable when the camera moves. A reconstruction artifact behind a moving object should not be confused with a genuine game-engine animation problem. If frame generation is enabled, inspect generated-frame artifacts separately from upscaler artifacts, because the two features can fail in different places.

Measure performance without overstating FPS

Performance numbers are meaningful only when the workload and counting method are explicit.

Use repeatable runs and multiple titles

Run the same route or built-in benchmark at least several times after a consistent warm-up. Use several games with different engines and scene types rather than declaring a winner from one title. Record averages and 1% lows, and preserve the run length and sampling method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate rendered frames from generated frames

With frame generation disabled, the reported rate normally corresponds to frames produced by the game’s render pipeline. With it enabled, distinguish the base rendered rate from the displayed rate that includes generated frames. A table that lists only the latter can make a mode appear to have doubled rendering performance when it has actually added interpolation work and display frames.

Use matched targets when image quality is the question

For a quality-focused comparison, match output resolution and, where practical, match a frame-rate target. If one technology needs Performance mode while another reaches the target in Quality mode, say so: the preset difference is part of the result. For a performance-focused comparison, hold the preset and internal resolution constant, then report the resulting frame-rate difference.

Metric Include Do not imply
Average FPS Run length, scene, and whether generated frames are included A universal advantage in every game
1% low FPS Sampling method and identical background conditions Guaranteed smoothness if traversal stutter dominates
Base render FPS Frames produced before frame generation The same thing as displayed FPS
Displayed FPS Base frames plus generated frames, clearly labeled Lower input latency by definition

Compatibility is tied to the exact feature and GPU

“Supports FSR,” “supports XeSS,” or “supports DLSS” is too broad for a buying or testing decision. Verify the game option, GPU generation, and software version together.

AMD FSR naming and Radeon support

AMD now calls its machine-learning upscaler “FSR Upscaling” within the broader Redstone suite. Redstone also includes FSR Frame Generation, FSR Ray Regeneration, and FSR Radiance Caching. AMD lists ML-based FSR Upscaling for Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 series, with RX 6000 support planned for 2027. Availability can differ by game, and AMD also describes upgrading some games that use FSR 3.1 or later through AMD Software. Treat the in-game implementation and the driver upgrade path as separate entries in a test log.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Intel XeSS support boundaries

Intel documents XeSS Super Resolution across Intel and certain other-vendor GPUs. Its cross-vendor implementation requires a GPU supporting Shader Model 6.4 and recommends DP4a or equivalent hardware acceleration; the detailed support table should be checked for the exact API and device. Intel Multi Frame Generation is documented as Intel-device-only, so XeSS Super Resolution compatibility does not imply compatibility with every XeSS feature.

NVIDIA DLSS verification

DLSS feature support varies by game, GPU generation, and software version. The evidence available for this comparison does not verify a current universal GPU-generation list or supported-game count from an official NVIDIA source. Check NVIDIA’s current documentation and the game’s own requirements before presenting a DLSS compatibility claim as definitive.

Question Correct level of precision
Does the game list an upscaler? Name the exact menu option and implementation version.
Does the GPU run it? Identify the GPU generation and feature-specific requirement.
Does a driver add it? State the driver/software version and whether the game originally supported the feature.
Does frame generation work? Verify it independently; upscaling support does not guarantee frame-generation support.

What current comparative evidence actually shows

ComputerBase’s March 4, 2026 test

ComputerBase’s updated comparison tested six games and ranked DLSS 4.5 first overall, FSR Upscaling AI second, and XeSS 2 third within its tested set. The result is a useful current snapshot, not a permanent league table. The article reported that DLSS’s lead was less consistent at WQHD than at Ultra HD, and that FSR won or tied in some WQHD games. Those differences demonstrate why a conclusion must name the tested games, resolutions, presets, GPUs, versions, and captured scenes.

What the 2022 TechSpot comparison contributes

TechSpot’s 2022 DLSS 2, FSR 2, and XeSS comparison used a Ryzen 9 5950X system and tested Nvidia and AMD graphics cards. Its lasting value is methodological: equivalent presets and outcomes differed by GPU and game, and XeSS performance on AMD hardware differed from its performance on Nvidia hardware. Its versions are old, so it should not be used as a current ranking.

How to read AMD’s 3.5× claim

AMD’s Redstone page reports an average 3.5× performance result for an RX 9070 XT in testing conducted as of November 2025, with FSR Upscaling in Performance mode and Frame Generation enabled across a named group of games and specified software conditions. That is a vendor result under AMD’s stated setup. It cannot be generalized to native rendering, every game, every GPU, or a head-to-head ranking against DLSS and XeSS.

A practical test procedure

  1. Make a compatibility list. For each game, write down the available DLSS, FSR, and XeSS options, their displayed versions, and any separate frame-generation or low-latency switches.
  2. Freeze the system. Install the chosen driver, close background applications, select a fixed power mode, and document CPU, GPU, memory, API, and operating-system details.
  3. Choose the target. Pick one output resolution and a stated graphics preset. Decide whether the comparison will hold internal resolution, preset, frame-rate target, or perceived quality constant.
  4. Capture native rendering. Run the scene with all upscalers and frame generation disabled. Record average FPS, 1% lows, a still, and a moving clip.
  5. Run each upscaler. Change only the upscaler and its preset. Record internal resolution or scale factor, then repeat the same scene and capture settings.
  6. Run frame generation separately. Keep the upscaler identified, toggle frame generation, and record base rendered FPS and displayed FPS as separate values.
  7. Inspect artifacts. Compare fine geometry, text, foliage, particles, transparency, reflections, disocclusion, ghosting, shimmer, flicker, and motion stability.
  8. Repeat and aggregate. Repeat each run, test several titles, and present averages or ranges without hiding outliers.

How to interpret disagreements between tests

Different resolution, different answer

A result at Ultra HD cannot be transferred automatically to WQHD or 1080p. At lower output resolutions, fewer source pixels and different spatial frequencies can change fine-detail reconstruction and artifact visibility.

Different game engine, different answer

Motion vectors, transparency handling, particle systems, anti-aliasing, and disocclusion behavior are supplied by the game engine. An upscaler that looks excellent in a stable, opaque scene may show ghosting in a title with fast foliage or frequent particles.

Different hardware, different answer

Vendor-specific acceleration and shader paths affect both speed and image quality. A XeSS run on an Intel GPU is not necessarily representative of XeSS on an AMD or Nvidia GPU, and a feature available in one Radeon generation may not be available in another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Different version, different behavior

Upscaler families evolve. Write the version beside every screenshot and benchmark result; do not merge a result from an older FSR, DLSS, or XeSS implementation with a newer one under a single label.

Common mistakes and fixes

Declaring a winner from one screenshot

Problem: A still misses ghosting, shimmer, and flicker. Fix: Pair every still with a repeatable moving sequence that includes foliage, thin geometry, particles, and disocclusion.

Comparing labels instead of input resolution

Problem: “Quality” is treated as an equal workload across vendors. Fix: Record internal resolution or scale factor and explain any mismatch.

Counting generated frames as rendered performance

Problem: A displayed-FPS number is presented as if the engine rendered every frame. Fix: publish base rendered FPS and generated/displayed FPS in separate columns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mixing versions or driver upgrades

Problem: A newer implementation is compared with an older one under the same family name. Fix: list game build, feature version, and driver for every run.

Using a vendor claim as an independent ranking

Problem: A controlled manufacturer result is generalized to all hardware and games. Fix: identify the vendor, date, hardware, settings, and enabled features, then keep it separate from independent testing.

Ignoring 1% lows

Problem: A high average hides traversal stutter or shader-compilation pauses. Fix: include 1% lows, explain the capture method, and retain the same route for every mode.

How to publish results readers can reproduce

Present a short setup block before each game’s findings. A useful record names the game build, GPU and driver, CPU, API, output and internal resolutions, graphics preset, upscaler version, frame-generation state, scene, average FPS, 1% lows, and visible artifacts. Include separate still crops and a motion clip at the same playback speed. If a value is unavailable, write “not stated” rather than estimating it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

End each game section with a scoped observation such as “XeSS produced the cleanest foliage in this 4K scene at the measured input resolution” rather than “XeSS is best.” Then provide a separate recommendation for the reader’s GPU and target resolution. Recheck support before publication because game patches, drivers, and feature names change.

Bottom line for readers

Compare the implementation you can actually run, not the vendor name on the menu. Match output resolution, scene, settings, and approximate frame-rate target; document internal resolution; inspect both stills and movement; and keep super resolution, frame generation, and latency features in separate measurements. The March 2026 ComputerBase ranking favors DLSS 4.5 within its six-game test, while its WQHD exceptions and the documented hardware and version differences show why that result cannot be promoted to a universal winner.
