To compare cracker prices fairly, divide each package’s price by its net ounces, then divide by the number of labeled servings if you also want a portion cost. Price per ounce compares equal weights; price per serving uses each package’s own serving definition, so the two measures answer different questions.
How to calculate price per ounce
Unit price lets you compare packages of different sizes on an equal-weight basis. Divide the price you can actually pay by the package’s net weight in ounces:

Price per ounce = package price ÷ net ounces
For example, if a package costs $4.00 and contains 10 ounces, its price is $0.40 per ounce. To compare two options, use the same price basis for both—regular shelf price against regular shelf price, or qualifying promotional price against qualifying promotional price.

How to calculate price per labeled serving
Find the serving size and servings per container on each package’s Nutrition Facts label. Divide the package price by the number of servings in the container:
Price per labeled serving = package price ÷ servings per container

If a package has about 10 servings and costs $4, the cost is about $0.40 per labeled serving. Keep the serving weight and serving count with the result: the serving definitions can differ substantially between products.
| Cracker example | Labeled serving | Source and context |
|---|---|---|
| Triscuit Original | 6 crackers (28 g) | ShopRite product listing, 2026; serving example for an 8.5 oz package. |
| Kroger Original Saltines | 5 crackers (16 g) | Kroger product listing, 2026. |
| Cheese crackers | 16 pieces (32 g) | USDA Food and Nutrition Service training-label example, circa 2020; illustrative, not a current retail product claim. |
These examples show why “cost per five crackers” is not a reliable comparison: five crackers may represent different weights, and a labeled serving may contain a different number of pieces. Use the package’s current label rather than assuming these example serving sizes still apply.

Which measure should you use?
- Use price per ounce when you want to compare the cost of the same amount of cracker by weight, regardless of package size.
- Use price per labeled serving when you want to estimate the cost of the portion each package defines. Include the serving weight and piece count so the basis is visible.
- Use both when you care about both equal-weight value and the package’s stated portion cost. A lower result on one measure does not guarantee a lower result on the other.
How to handle sales and multi-buy offers
Use the price available to you, and identify whether it is a regular shelf price, loyalty price, or multi-buy offer. For a multi-buy deal, divide the effective total price by the combined ounces only if you will meet the offer’s conditions and buy the required number of packages.
For illustration, a local ShopRite listing in 2026 showed Triscuit Original Family Size, 12.5 oz, at $5.29 ($0.42/oz), alongside a 2 for $9 offer stated to be valid September 20–26, 2026. That dated promotion has ended; it is not a current or nationwide price. Retail prices and offers vary by location and date, so check the shelf label or retailer listing where you shop.

Keep price and nutrition comparisons separate
Price per ounce measures cost, not nutritional quality. If nutrition matters to your decision, compare the nutrient or dietary feature you care about on a consistent basis—such as per 100 g or per labeled serving—and report that separately from price. Consumer nutrition advice likewise treats price and nutrition as distinct considerations: Nutrition.gov food shopping and meal planning.
