To compare centralized crypto exchanges with on-chain perpetuals platforms, assess the specific venue and contract—not just the category. Check who controls collateral, how the contract is priced and liquidated, what the position will cost over your holding period, how much liquidity is available at your trade size, and whether you can legally use the product where you live. Neither “centralized” nor “on-chain” by itself establishes that a platform is safer, cheaper, more reliable, or more liquid.
What does “centralized” or “on-chain” tell you?
The labels describe aspects of how a product operates; they do not settle every question about custody, trading, or risk. A custodial venue and an on-chain protocol may differ in who controls funds, who operates matching and settlement, and how users interact with the system. The details matter more than the label.

For example, Kraken’s venue-authored comparison, published June 19, 2026, describes Kraken as custodial and dYdX as a validator-run on-chain protocol where users hold funds in a wallet. Treat that as a description of those particular services, not proof that either is decentralized in every respect or that one is categorically safer.

Use the following checklist for the exact venue, product, contract, location, position size, and expected holding period you have in mind.

- Custody and control: Who controls collateral between deposit and withdrawal? Do you interact through an account, a wallet, or both?
- Operations and failure modes: Where do matching and settlement take place? Who can pause the system or change its parameters? What are the stated procedures for outages, liquidations, exploits, or insolvency?
- Contract terms: What are the settlement and collateral assets, index or oracle inputs, margin rules, leverage limits, trading hours, and liquidation process?
- Total cost: What are the applicable maker or taker fees, expected funding payments, and any liquidation, conversion, deposit, withdrawal, or network costs?
- Execution: What spread and executable depth are available for your intended trade size, and how might slippage or maintenance affect execution?
- Product and access: Does the venue offer the contracts, order types, margin tools, fiat access, and support you need? Is this product available to you under current terms?
How do custody, control, and operational risks differ?
Map what happens to your collateral from the moment you fund a position until you withdraw. A custodial service may hold or control funds through the venue’s account system. An on-chain protocol may involve a wallet and transactions interacting with protocol contracts. Those broad descriptions still leave important product-specific questions unanswered: who can administer or upgrade components, which parts rely on operators or validators, and what happens if a component is unavailable.
Questions to answer for either architecture
- Who can authorize transfers or otherwise control the collateral?
- Which parts of the trading and settlement process happen on-chain, and which depend on a company, operator, or other service?
- Who can pause, upgrade, or change relevant parameters, and under what stated process?
- What does the venue or protocol say happens during an outage, exploit, liquidation event, or insolvency?
Do not treat a wallet interface as a complete account of control, or a custodial account as a complete account of how a trade is matched and settled. Look for the product’s current terms and technical documentation.

How should you compare the contract and oracle?
Perpetual contracts do not expire, so a position can remain open without a scheduled expiry date. Instead, the contract’s pricing, margin rules, funding, and liquidation process affect the position while it is open. Specifications can differ from one market to another, including within the same venue.
Inspect these terms for the exact market
- Settlement and collateral: Identify the asset used to settle the contract and the asset required as margin. They may not be the same.
- Index or oracle: Find out which price sources inform the contract and how the reference price is constructed. An oracle denomination or source can matter when evaluating how a contract tracks its underlying asset.
- Margin and leverage: Check initial and maintenance margin, margin mode, and maximum leverage. A maximum is a product limit, not a recommendation or an indication of the leverage a user should take.
- Liquidation: Check how the product determines liquidation and what charges may apply if it occurs.
- Availability and trading terms: Confirm the market’s trading schedule, maintenance provisions, and current eligibility requirements.
As examples of why checking the instrument matters, Coinbase International Exchange’s product specifications list linear, USDC-settled perpetuals with no expiry and index pricing, while margin and leverage are specified by product. One listed product page states a maximum of 50x; that figure is a contract-specific ceiling, not a general term for every market. A different default initial margin can imply much lower starting leverage.

Hyperliquid’s contract specifications say oracle denomination follows the primary liquidity source for the spot asset. They identify PURR-USD and HYPE-USD as current USDC-denominated perpetual exceptions, with Hyperliquid spot as the most liquid spot oracle source. These are protocol-documentation details that may change; check the live specification for the market you are considering.
How do you estimate the real cost of a position?
A headline trading fee is only one part of cost. Estimate charges for the same position size, trading activity, and holding period on each product. Include funding over the expected holding period rather than treating a single quoted rate as permanent.

Cost components to include

| Trading fees | Applicable maker and taker fees for your account tier and expected order behavior. |
| Funding | Whether you expect to pay or receive funding, how often it settles, and how the rate may change. The direction depends on the sign of the rate. |
| Liquidation-related charges | Whether a liquidation fee or other charge applies and how liquidation is triggered. |
| Funding and margin interaction | Whether an unpaid funding amount can be deducted from position margin and affect liquidation risk. |
| Other transaction costs | Deposit, withdrawal, conversion, or network costs where they apply to the product and your route in or out. |
Funding payments transfer between long and short position holders and are intended to help keep a perpetual contract aligned with a spot index. Who pays depends on the rate’s sign. Binance’s official Futures documentation says funding is not charged by Binance as a separate funding-payment fee; it describes transfers between opposing position holders. The documentation also notes that if account funds are insufficient, funding may be deducted from position margin and may affect liquidation price.

Funding intervals and adjustments can vary by contract and can change, including in volatile conditions. Binance’s documentation describes an ordinary default interval but also allows contract-specific variation and schedule adjustments. Check the live contract page rather than assuming a particular interval or rate will persist. When comparing fees, do not set a base fee for one venue against a higher-volume tier for another.

How can you compare liquidity and execution fairly?
Compare the same contract, or close equivalents, at a representative trade size and over the same observation period. Record the spread, available executable depth, expected slippage, and performance during fast markets. Also check outages and scheduled maintenance. A volume figure alone does not tell you how much you can execute at a particular price.
A BIS Working Paper published November 19, 2024, found that liquidity provision in the decentralized exchanges it studied was concentrated among a small group of sophisticated participants. That is relevant context about those markets’ structure, not a ranking of centralized exchanges against on-chain perpetuals platforms or a finding about every on-chain market.
How should you compare markets, tools, and availability?
Beyond the contract itself, check whether the product has the markets and tools you need: order types, portfolio or margin controls, fiat access if relevant, trading hours, maintenance arrangements, and user support. Market counts and regional availability are time-sensitive and do not establish that a particular contract is suitable or accessible to you.
Kraken’s June 19, 2026 comparison stated that Kraken offered 300+ crypto perpetual markets and dYdX offered 180+ at that time. These are vendor-authored, dated counts—not independent measures of market quality or a guarantee that the same listings remain available. Verify current official product terms and listings before relying on them.
How do location and regulation affect the comparison?
Access and eligibility can differ by country, venue, and product. For your location, check the venue’s current country list and terms, the legal entity providing the service, and relevant local regulator information. Do not infer that a product is available worldwide or that protections are the same across jurisdictions. Without a specified location, no particular venue can be recommended on the basis of eligibility or local legal status.

- Check execution at your size. Compare spread, executable depth, and expected slippage for the same market and observation period, including conditions that could disrupt trading.
- Verify access before acting. Confirm current listings, venue terms, and location-specific eligibility rather than relying on a category label or an old comparison.
