The fairest comparison of asset management companies is not a league table of the biggest assets under management (AUM), the lowest advertised fee, or the strongest one-year return. Compare firms only after matching the mandate, client type, investment vehicle, geography, currency, and time horizon. Then normalize each firm’s AUM definition and date, calculate the investor’s all-in cost, and compare strategy-level net returns with an appropriate benchmark over identical periods.
This approach prevents three common errors: treating different AUM measures as equivalent, comparing a base management fee with another firm’s total cost, and reading a headline return without knowing its benchmark or fee treatment. The figures below are primarily U.S.-based examples; investors elsewhere should substitute their own regulator’s filings, disclosure rules, and product documents.

1. Define what you are actually comparing
Before collecting numbers, write a one-sentence comparison brief. It should state the asset class, strategy, client type, account or fund vehicle, target geography, currency, risk level, and intended holding period. A global equity mutual fund, a separately managed municipal-bond account, and a private credit fund may all be offered by “asset managers,” but their liquidity, costs, valuation methods, and appropriate benchmarks are different.

Match the mandate
- Asset class: public equity, fixed income, cash, real assets, alternatives, or a multi-asset allocation.
- Strategy: passive index tracking, fundamental active management, factor investing, income, liability matching, or another defined approach.
- Client and account: retail, institutional, retirement, endowment, taxable account, separately managed account, mutual fund, exchange-traded fund, or private fund.
- Geography and currency: specify where the assets are invested and the currency in which returns and fees are reported.
- Time horizon and liquidity: a short-term reserve has a different objective from a decades-long retirement allocation.
- Services: portfolio construction, tax management, reporting, custody coordination, manager research, or financial planning can change the price and the relevant comparison.
If two firms do not serve the same mandate, do not force them into a single ranking. Describe the difference and compare each with alternatives that have the same job in the portfolio.

2. Normalize AUM before using it as a scale measure
AUM describes the assets included under a firm’s stated measurement policy at a particular time. It is useful for understanding scale, operating reach, and sometimes a strategy’s capacity, but it is not a quality score. One SEC-filed annual report states that the registrant’s AUM “is not based on any specific regulatory definition” and “may differ from similarly titled measures presented by other asset managers.” A figure that looks precise can therefore be calculated differently from a competitor’s figure.
Record the definition, date, and scope
For every firm, copy the exact label used in the filing or product document and record:
- the valuation date and whether the figure is a point-in-time amount or an average for a period;
- the reporting currency and, if relevant, the exchange-rate convention;
- whether assets are firm-wide, strategy-level, fund-level, or account-level;
- whether advisory, sub-advisory, model-delivery, or discretionary and nondiscretionary assets are included;
- the portion that is fee-paying and the portion included for broader reporting but not charged a management fee;
- whether affiliated, non-managed, or committed-but-not-yet-invested assets are included; and
- the valuation method, especially for private or less frequently priced holdings.
Do not put a quarterly AUM point next to a competitor’s annual average and call the larger number “bigger.” Align dates and measurement bases first.
Separate market movement from client flows
When a manager discloses the components, distinguish asset growth caused by investment gains or losses from growth caused by net subscriptions, withdrawals, acquisitions, or currency movements. Rising AUM can reflect market appreciation rather than new clients; falling AUM can reflect a market decline even when clients add money. AUM growth alone does not identify investment skill, retention, profitability, or future capacity.
Keep regulatory RAUM distinct from marketing AUM
For U.S. scale context, the Securities and Exchange Commission reported 22,932 investment advisers and $177 trillion in regulatory assets under management (RAUM) in 2025. The visualization uses data reported on Form ADV, including Item 5F(2)(a-c). RAUM is a defined regulatory statistic for advisers; it should not be casually equated with a manager’s marketing AUM, a fund’s net assets, or fee-paying assets.
That industry total is context, not a ranking of firms or a statement about quality. A company can report a large commercial AUM number while managing a smaller fee-paying book, and an adviser’s RAUM can include assets managed under arrangements that differ from a public fund’s net assets.

AUM comparison worksheet
| Field | What to capture | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Measure name | Exact term used, such as AUM, RAUM, assets advised, or fund net assets | Similar labels can represent different populations of assets. |
| Date and averaging | Point-in-time date or average for the year/quarter | Market moves and client flows can change the result materially. |
| Scope | Firm, strategy, vehicle, or account | A strategy comparison requires strategy-level data, not only a parent-company total. |
| Fee-paying status | Fee-paying assets and assets reported without a management charge | AUM that generates no fee should not be treated as equivalent revenue-producing scale. |
| Currency and valuation | Reporting currency, FX convention, and valuation frequency | Currency conversion and stale private-asset prices can distort comparisons. |
3. Calculate the investor’s total cost
The number that matters is what the specific investor pays for the specific product or account, not a headline rate copied from a website. The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Assistance said in its July 23, 2025 Investor Bulletin: “When choosing an investment professional or an investment, be sure you understand and compare the fees you’ll be charged.” The bulletin directs investors to account statements and trade confirmations; for a mutual fund or ETF, its prospectus contains a standardized table of fees and expenses.
Identify every fee layer
- Advisory or management charge: the rate paid to the adviser, including whether it is charged on beginning, ending, average, or another asset base.
- Fund or vehicle expenses: expense ratios, administration, custody, legal, audit, index-licensing, and other expenses charged inside a fund where applicable.
- Trading and implementation costs: commissions, spreads, turnover-related costs, foreign-exchange charges, or brokerage and platform fees when they apply.
- Account and service charges: custody, reporting, planning, or minimum-account fees that sit outside the investment vehicle.
- Performance-linked charges: incentive or performance fees, carried interest, crystallization dates, high-water marks, hurdles, and clawbacks.
Ask whether each figure is gross or net of waivers, rebates, performance fees, and underlying product expenses. A “0.50% management fee” is not an all-in cost if the account also holds funds with their own expenses or pays a performance fee.
Read the contractual terms, not just the rate card
Check breakpoints and tiering, account minimums, introductory waivers, termination charges, billing frequency, pro-rating for deposits and withdrawals, and the definition of assets used for billing. Confirm whether a fee is recurring, one-time, conditional, or negotiable. For private funds, read the offering and partnership documents for management-fee offsets, preferred returns, catch-up provisions, and expense-allocation language; do not assume a public-fund expense ratio applies.
Use comparable fee bases
Put all candidates on one basis: annualized percentage of the same asset base, plus any fixed dollar charges, with the same treatment of waivers and performance fees. If one firm publishes a gross advisory rate and another publishes an all-in net figure, label the difference rather than presenting the two numbers as comparable.
Illustrative company disclosure: why methodology matters
Artisan Partners Asset Management Inc. reported $173.0 billion of average AUM and a 69.3-basis-point weighted average fee rate for 2025. Its filing says the calculation includes performance fees and divides annualized investment management fees by average AUM; it also describes differences by investment vehicle. Those are company-specific disclosures, not a recommended price or a market-wide benchmark. Use the same discipline with every manager: identify the numerator, denominator, period, and included vehicles before drawing a conclusion.

- Obtain the advisory agreement or investment-management schedule for the proposed account.
- Obtain the current fund prospectus, supplement, or private-fund offering document for each vehicle.
- Compare the stated charges with a recent account statement and trade confirmations.
- List costs that are deducted inside the vehicle separately from costs billed to the account.
- Ask the provider to explain any difference between the advertised rate and the amount actually charged.
4. Compare performance on equal terms
A return has meaning only when its strategy, benchmark, period, currency, risk, and fee treatment are identified. Use the relevant fund or strategy record rather than a company-wide number that mixes unrelated mandates.

Choose a benchmark that matches the job
The benchmark should represent the opportunity set and constraints of the mandate. A global developed-market equity strategy should not be judged against a domestic large-cap index; a short-duration bond portfolio should not be judged against a broad long-duration bond index. If the manager uses a blended or custom benchmark, verify the components, weights, rebalancing method, and whether the benchmark changed during the period.
Align dates, currency, and return convention
- Use identical start and end dates, preferably across one-, three-, five-, and 10-year periods where available.
- Keep the currency consistent or disclose the currency conversion and whether returns are hedged.
- Specify total return versus price return for the benchmark.
- State whether the manager return is time-weighted or money-weighted when the distinction is relevant.
- Label returns as gross or net of fees, and make the benchmark treatment consistent.
- Separate the record of the current team and mandate from an acquired or rebranded predecessor record.
Put long-run active-management statistics in context
S&P Dow Jones Indices’ SPIVA Institutional Scorecard Year-End 2025 reported that, after fees, at least 80% of equity funds and at least 50% of fixed-income funds underperformed their respective benchmarks over the 10 years ending December 31, 2025. The scorecard also reported that, in its U.S. large-cap equity comparison for 2025, 67% of institutional accounts and 75% of wrap accounts underperformed the S&P 500 on a gross-of-fees basis.
These are aggregate results for the scorecard’s defined categories. The 10-year figures are after fees, while the 2025 institutional and wrap figures are gross of fees; they are not interchangeable. Neither statistic predicts the next result for a particular manager, fund, or investor. Use them to understand why a benchmark and fee-adjusted record are necessary, then examine the specific strategy’s disclosures.
Performance comparison table
| Question | Acceptable evidence | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| What did the strategy seek to do? | Written mandate, eligible assets, risk limits, and benchmark | A return presented without a defined objective |
| What period is measured? | Same start/end dates for manager and benchmark, with multiple horizons | Only the best recent year or an unmatched period |
| How are fees treated? | Clearly labeled gross or net returns and consistent benchmark treatment | Gross manager returns compared with a net-of-cost product benchmark |
| Whose record is it? | Named vehicle, strategy, team, and continuity of mandate | Parent-company average used as a substitute for the proposed product |
| What risks produced the return? | Volatility, drawdowns, liquidity, leverage, and concentration disclosures | A high return with no explanation of risk or constraints |
5. Match the comparison to the investment vehicle
Vehicle structure changes both the investor experience and the numbers reported by the manager.
Mutual funds and ETFs
Use the current prospectus for the standardized expense table, portfolio turnover information, investment objective, principal risks, and performance presentation. Check whether the quoted return reflects reinvested distributions and whether the benchmark is the one specified in the prospectus. For ETFs, distinguish the fund’s operating expenses from brokerage spread and trading costs paid when buying or selling shares.
Separately managed accounts
Confirm the advisory fee, household or account minimum, securities- or model-level restrictions, tax-management service, custody arrangement, and any underlying funds. A separately managed account may have a low advisory rate but additional charges for implementation or external vehicles.

Private funds and alternatives
Read the governing documents for valuation frequency, subscription and redemption limits, lockups, gates, leverage, incentive fees, and expense allocations. Compare only with vehicles that have similar liquidity and valuation conventions. A quarterly private-fund return cannot be treated as directly equivalent to a daily-priced public fund without explaining the difference.

6. Verify the provider and the product
Use the documents that apply to the exact relationship, not a marketing presentation alone. For U.S. advisers, review the applicable Form ADV disclosures and the firm’s disciplinary, ownership, conflicts, and business information. For products, use the current prospectus, statement of additional information where applicable, audited reports, and account-level documents. Investors in other jurisdictions should use the equivalent adviser register, product disclosure document, and regulator filings.
Questions to resolve with the firm
- Which legal entity signs the agreement and receives each fee?
- Which assets are included in the quoted AUM, and which are fee-paying?
- Is the performance record audited, and is it presented under a recognized composite or fund methodology?
- What benchmark and fee basis are used in every performance chart?
- What conflicts arise from affiliated products, revenue sharing, securities lending, or brokerage arrangements?
- What happens to the strategy, fees, and team if the account falls below a minimum or the mandate changes?
7. A repeatable comparison process
- Write the mandate. Define asset class, strategy, client type, vehicle, geography, currency, risk, liquidity, and horizon.
- Build a candidate set. Exclude firms whose products cannot perform the required role, rather than ranking incomparable offerings.
- Collect primary documents. Save the current adviser filing, prospectus or agreement, fee schedule, audited report, and performance presentation for each candidate.
- Normalize AUM. Record definition, date, currency, scope, valuation method, and fee-paying share. Keep firm, strategy, and vehicle figures in separate columns.
- Calculate total cost. Add advisory, vehicle, transaction, platform, custody, and performance-linked charges on the same asset base and fee basis.
- Normalize performance. Align dates, benchmark, currency, risk category, and gross/net treatment. Examine several periods and drawdowns, not just the best return.
- Check implementation. Confirm minimums, liquidity, tax or account restrictions, reporting, service levels, and the legal entity responsible for the contract.
- Document uncertainty. Mark any item as “not stated” when the provider does not disclose it. Do not fill a gap with an estimate or a competitor’s definition.
- Make a mandate-based decision. Choose the option that best fits the required service and risk, after considering cost and evidence; do not let scale decide by itself.
8. Common comparison mistakes and their fixes
Mistake: ranking firms by AUM alone
Fix: Treat AUM as scale context. Verify the definition, date, fee-paying share, and strategy-level amount before using it.
Mistake: comparing advertised base fees
Fix: Reconstruct the all-in cost from the agreement, prospectus, statements, and trade confirmations, including performance-linked and account-level charges.
Mistake: selecting the highest recent return
Fix: Use an appropriate benchmark, aligned periods, net or gross labels, and a risk and drawdown review. A single period can reflect a temporary style or market exposure.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Mistake: mixing gross and net results
Fix: Put returns on one fee basis. The SPIVA figures illustrate why the distinction matters: its long-run category results are after fees, while its cited 2025 institutional and wrap comparison is gross of fees.
Best Value
Mistake: treating industry averages as a forecast
Fix: Use aggregate statistics for context only. They do not establish what a particular manager will earn or whether it will outperform in the future.
Mistake: ignoring account size and services
Fix: Apply breakpoints, minimums, tiering, planning, tax management, reporting, and implementation requirements to the actual account. The cheapest headline rate may not be the lowest cost for the service the investor needs.
9. Adapt the method outside the United States
The logic travels, but labels and required documents do not. Replace U.S. Form ADV and RAUM with the adviser register and regulatory asset definition used in your jurisdiction. Use the local equivalent of a prospectus, key-information document, fee disclosure, trade confirmation, and audited report. Check whether taxes, sales charges, platform fees, or currency-hedging costs are disclosed separately. State the country, regulator, share class, and currency whenever you publish a comparison so readers do not mistake a U.S.-specific figure for a universal standard.

10. A publication-ready comparison table
For a transparent article, memo, or investment committee paper, use one row per firm and keep unlike measures visible rather than hiding them in a single score.
| Category | Firm A | Firm B | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mandate and vehicle | State exact strategy and vehicle | State exact strategy and vehicle | Explain whether the offerings are genuinely comparable. |
| AUM definition and date | Copy provider’s wording and date | Copy provider’s wording and date | Do not compare different definitions or dates as if identical. |

| Advisory or management fee | Rate, tiers, basis, and minimum | Rate, tiers, basis, and minimum | Base fee only; add the other layers below. |
| Vehicle and account expenses | Expense ratio and other charges | Expense ratio and other charges | Use current product documents. |
| Performance-linked terms | Fee, hurdle, high-water mark, or “not stated” | Fee, hurdle, high-water mark, or “not stated” | These terms can change the effective cost materially. |
| Benchmark and periods | Benchmark plus aligned one-, three-, five-, and 10-year periods where available | Benchmark plus aligned periods | Label gross or net and use the same dates. |
| Risk and liquidity | Drawdowns, volatility, lockups, or restrictions | Drawdowns, volatility, lockups, or restrictions | Returns cannot be separated from the risks taken. |
| Disclosure gaps | Items not stated | Items not stated | A missing figure is a reason to investigate, not a zero. |
11. What the numbers can and cannot tell you
AUM can show the scale of a platform, but its definition may include non-fee-paying or differently managed assets. Fees show the contractual price, but an advertised rate may omit product and performance-related costs. Performance shows what happened under a particular mandate and period, but a return without a matching benchmark, risk description, and fee basis is incomplete. The comparison is useful only when all three measures are tied to the same investor objective and vehicle.
Company-reported AUM, fees, and performance change over time. Refresh the filings and product disclosures before making a named comparison, and identify the date of every figure. No universal AUM definition or universal benchmark applies to every strategy, so an honest comparison may end with a documented difference rather than a single winner.
The Bottom Line
Compare asset managers in this order: mandate fit, normalized AUM, all-in cost, then benchmarked net performance and disclosure quality. Size is context, fees are contractual, and returns are meaningful only when their benchmark, period, risk, and fee treatment match.
