Then read written reviews for repeated, specific comments about the services that matter to your purchase—especially delivery and installation if you plan to use them.
Start with what each rating actually measures
An overall satisfaction score, a public star average, and a rating for installation are not interchangeable. They may describe different experiences, use different scales, and come from different groups of customers. Before comparing the numbers, identify the publisher and read its definition of the score and any stated factor weights.

For example, a J.D. Power Appliance Retailer Satisfaction Study brochure lists six factors for that edition: sales staff and service, store facility, price, delivery and installation service, sales and promotions, and merchandise. A J.D. Power release describing its 2015 appliance retailer study lists seven factors, separating delivery service from installation service. The factor set can change by edition, so scores from different years may not be directly comparable. J.D. Power’s 2015 study release and the 2023 U.S. Appliance Satisfaction Study release are tied to their named years; neither should be presented as a current ranking without current evidence.

Check the date, sample, and collection method
A rating is easier to interpret when its source explains who provided the feedback, when they bought, how many people responded, and how participants were recruited or screened. J.D. Power describes its benchmarking approach as using independently collected consumer feedback, study-specific sample design, respondent checks, and analysis of customer feedback. Those are useful questions to ask of any published score; they do not establish that every review site or retailer platform uses the same controls. J.D. The J.D. Power brochure stated that its edition drew on approximately 2,000 customers who had purchased an appliance at a major home appliance retailer in the previous 12 months. That is a historical, edition-specific figure, not a confirmed sample size for a current study. The 2020 study material should therefore be read in its date and edition context.
- Who was surveyed? Recent buyers, all customers, or a different group?
- When did the experience happen? A dated study or review period may not reflect current service.
- How large was the sample? A score without a response count gives limited context for judging its stability.
- How were responses gathered? Look for recruitment, screening, and respondent-verification details where provided.
- What geography and retailers are covered? Check rather than assuming the findings apply to your location or every store.
Compare like with like
Keep survey-based satisfaction results separate from open review averages unless you can establish that they measure the same thing in a comparable way. Do not convert one publisher’s score into another’s scale or rank unlike measures as if they were equivalent. If a source reports an overall index, inspect its component factors and weights where available; if it reports a star average, find out what the stars refer to and what period they cover.

Small gaps between scores are especially hard to interpret when sample sizes, uncertainty estimates, or methods are missing. There is no universal cutoff in the cited study materials for deciding that two different ratings meaningfully distinguish one store from another.
Read written reviews for recurring service themes
Use comments to add detail to a score, not to treat a handful of anecdotes as a representative survey. Scan for concrete, repeated experiences and group them by the part of the purchase they describe:

- Sales help: Did customers describe useful assistance or difficulty getting answers?
- Price and promotions: Were comments about advertised prices, discounts, or how promotions were handled?
- Delivery and installation: What did buyers say about the delivery or installation service they received?
- Merchandise: Did reviews address the products or the condition of items received?
- Store or online experience: What does the review source actually report about the channel used?
These themes overlap with factors in J.D. Power’s retailer study materials, but that does not verify how any particular retailer platform checks purchases, moderates reviews, or handles incentivized submissions. Unless the platform explains its review practices, treat that information as unknown.

Give the most attention to the parts of the experience you will rely on. If you need the store to deliver and install a large appliance, look closely at those dimensions and recurring comments about them. If you plan to collect the item and arrange service independently, sales help, price, merchandise, or the store experience may matter more to you. This is a way to tailor your decision—not a weighting prescribed by the cited study.

- Write down your priorities. Decide which service dimensions could most affect your purchase.
- Compare ratings only within their definitions. Note each source’s date, population, method, and measured factors.
- Use comments to investigate your priorities. Look for repeated, specific accounts rather than relying on one unusually positive or negative review.
- Keep unknowns visible. Mark missing sample, method, or platform information as unknown instead of assuming the ratings are equally reliable.
