Run the same representative workload on the same physical system, with matching resolution, graphics options, build configuration and frame-cap policy. Repeat the runs, report frame time in milliseconds as well as FPS, inspect CPU and GPU timings when available, and publish the run-to-run spread. The result describes that game and configuration—not every project that uses the engine.
What a fair engine-version comparison actually measures
An engine upgrade comparison asks whether one specific game workload changes when the project is built with an older versus newer engine version. It is not a contest between engine brands, and it cannot establish a universal ranking from one title. Engine defaults, compiler behavior, rendering APIs, project code, assets and hardware all interact. Your conclusion therefore has to be scoped to the tested game, build, platform and settings.

A useful comparison has three properties:
- Controlled: the versions differ in the intended way while other variables are held constant.
- Repeatable: another person can follow the same workload and obtain results in the same general range.
- Diagnosable: the report shows frame pacing and likely bottlenecks, not just a single average FPS number.
Godot’s optimization guidance calls testing a real game the “golden standard.” A synthetic test can isolate a subsystem, but it should be labeled as such rather than presented as proof of player-facing performance.

| Control | What to keep identical | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | Same CPU, GPU, memory, storage, display and power mode | Model numbers, memory capacity, laptop power profile and connected display |
| Software environment | Operating-system installation, background-app policy and GPU driver | OS build, driver version, active overlays and capture software |
| Workload | Same scene, player actions, camera path, simulation state and test duration | Starting location, route, scripted inputs and warm-up treatment |
| Image settings | Resolution, display mode, quality presets, scalable options, shadows, effects and texture settings | Every setting and whether it was changed in-game or in a configuration file |
| Build | Release/development choice, architecture, optimization flags and asset pipeline | Engine version, commit or build identifier and unavoidable default changes |
| Timing policy | VSync, frame cap, dynamic resolution and refresh-rate behavior | Whether each limiter was enabled and its exact value |
If a control cannot be matched, disclose the difference and explain why. A newer engine may require a different compiler, graphics API or project setting; that practical difference belongs in the test description instead of being silently treated as an engine effect.
Choose a workload that represents play
Built-in benchmark
Use a built-in benchmark when it exercises the systems you care about and can be launched identically in both builds. Capture its complete run, not only the fastest segment. Verify that it loads the same assets and simulation path after the upgrade.
Scripted gameplay route
When no benchmark exists, create a deterministic route through a representative scene. Fix the starting save or world state, use the same input sequence and camera movement, and stop after a stated duration. A replay file, input script or visible route markers make the procedure auditable. Include ordinary play as well as a demanding area if the game’s performance varies sharply by scene.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIsolated or synthetic test
An isolated particle, animation, physics or rendering test can answer a narrow diagnostic question. It cannot stand in for the whole game because it may omit streaming, gameplay scripting, shader compilation and other real workloads. Label it “subsystem test” and pair it with a production-like run when making a player-facing claim.
Build both versions for parity
- Duplicate the project or create two clean branches so that source assets and gameplay code are identical.
- Record the exact engine version for each branch, including patch number and any custom build.
- Apply the same target platform, architecture, rendering API, quality configuration and optimization settings.
- Rebuild both versions after the final change. Godot’s guidance specifically recommends using the exact same build settings for the baseline and changed builds.
- Check that both builds contain the same assets, texture compression, shader variants, scene data and save state.
- Note differences that cannot be eliminated, such as a compiler requirement, API default or engine feature migration. Those differences may be part of the real upgrade cost and should remain visible in the report.
Do not compare an optimized shipping build with an editor session or a profiling build with a release build unless that is the question you are answering. For a player-facing result, use production-like builds. For diagnosis, profiling builds can be useful, but state that they are not the same configuration players will run.
Prepare the test machine
- Use the same physical system for every run, connected to the same power source and display.
- Set a fixed resolution and refresh rate. Disable dynamic resolution unless it is an intentional part of the game configuration.
- Close or standardize background applications, downloads, update services and browser tabs.
- Keep the GPU driver and operating-system version unchanged between the old and new build tests.
- Record whether overlays, video capture, performance monitors or profilers are active. They can add overhead or alter scheduling.
- Allow the same loading and shader-compilation warm-up. Decide in advance whether first-run stutter is part of the user experience or excluded from steady-state measurements.
Unreal Engine 4.27 profiling guidance recommends a reproducible case isolated from sources of noise. That principle applies even when the project uses another engine.
Handle VSync and frame caps explicitly
VSync and frame caps can hide differences by forcing both builds to the same ceiling. Unreal Engine 4.27 documentation warns that VSync can impose a 30- or 60-FPS limit and recommends profiling without it for more accurate timing. That does not mean VSync should always be disabled: a player-facing test may need to measure the normal display configuration. Run and label the appropriate mode instead of mixing policies.

| Test mode | Purpose | Disclosure |
|---|---|---|
| Uncapped, VSync off | Expose engine and hardware throughput | State that the mode is diagnostic and may not match a player’s display behavior |
| Player configuration | Show the experience users actually receive | List refresh rate, VSync state, frame cap and adaptive-sync behavior |
| Fixed cap below the ceiling | Compare frame pacing under a controlled target | Give the cap value and explain that excess headroom is intentionally hidden |
Never compare one build uncapped with the other capped. If a cap is active, a higher raw capability may not appear in the average FPS, but frame-time stability can still differ.
Run enough repetitions to see normal variation
- Launch the same build and apply the predefined settings.
- Perform the same warm-up and start trigger.
- Run the complete route without changing camera, inputs or scene state.
- Save the raw log or overlay capture, then exit and restart according to the plan.
- Repeat the identical process for the remaining runs and then for the other engine version.
Do not publish only the best run. Background scheduling, shader caches, streaming and thermal behavior can move results from run to run. Godot’s current contributor optimization guidance says fluctuations of up to 10% are common and expected in its benchmark context. That figure is not a universal noise allowance; your own spread is the evidence for your setup.
Show every run when the sample is small, or report a central summary with a clearly defined spread when there are many runs. Explain whether the summary is a mean, median or another statistic, and whether warm-up runs were discarded. Keep the same rule for both versions.
Report frame time, not FPS alone
FPS is familiar, but frame time tells you how long each frame took. Convert an observed rate with:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
frame time (milliseconds) = 1000 ÷ FPS
At 60 FPS, a frame takes about 16.67 ms; at 120 FPS, it takes about 8.33 ms. A small average-FPS change can conceal occasional long frames, while a similar average can hide a much smoother distribution.
| Metric | What it answers | How to present it |
|---|---|---|
| Average FPS | How many frames were produced on average | Include the aggregation method and run spread |
| Frame-time average | Average milliseconds spent per frame | Use milliseconds, not a rounded FPS conversion alone |
| Frame-time distribution | Whether most frames are consistent or a minority spike | Show a plot, percentile values or a frame-time trace when available |
| Worst or longest frames | Where visible hitching may occur | Give the sampling window and avoid implying that one outlier is typical |
| Run-to-run spread | Whether the version difference exceeds ordinary variation | List each run or a defined range |
Epic’s performance guidance describes both FPS and frame time as valid measures, while its Unreal Engine 4.27 profiling guide recommends milliseconds because they directly describe time spent per frame. Use both: FPS for readability and frame time for analysis.
Find the limiting thread or device
When the engine exposes them, capture game-thread, render-thread and GPU timings alongside the frame-time trace. Unreal’s profiling statistics separate these components. The pattern helps explain a change:

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
- Game-thread time rises: gameplay scripts, simulation, AI, asset management or engine-side scheduling may be limiting the frame.
- Render-thread time rises: submission work, scene traversal or rendering command generation may be the constraint.
- GPU time rises: shading, resolution, effects, bandwidth or a rendering-path change may dominate.
- All timings look similar but spikes change: investigate streaming, shader compilation, synchronization or background activity rather than declaring a throughput improvement.
These labels are diagnostic clues, not proof of causation. A timing overlay can itself add overhead, so state whether it was active during the measured run. If the engine does not expose separate timings, say so and limit the conclusion to the measurements you actually captured.
Compare frame pacing and workload slices
One aggregate number can hide where the upgrade matters. Divide the route into meaningful slices such as traversal, combat, a crowded scene, loading and a demanding visual effect. Keep slice boundaries identical between builds.
For each slice, compare:
- Typical frame time and visible spikes.
- CPU and GPU timings, if available.
- Whether the scene is ordinary play, a stress case or a synthetic subsystem test.
- Run-to-run spread and any warm-up or cache behavior.
A version that improves a heavy scene but leaves ordinary traversal unchanged should be described exactly that way. Do not average the slices into a broad “the engine is faster” statement unless the aggregate result and its weighting support it.
Decide whether the observed change is meaningful
There is no broadly applicable statistical threshold in the available guidance for declaring an engine-version change meaningful. Compare the size of the change with your measured run-to-run spread and explain the practical effect. A difference smaller than normal variation is inconclusive; a consistent shift across repetitions and workload slices is stronger evidence.
UL Benchmarks estimates ±15% accuracy for its own published game-performance estimation method. That estimate belongs to UL’s method and is not a tolerance for every game, engine or home test. Do not use it as a universal pass/fail rule.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Also separate statistical visibility from player impact. A measurable improvement may not change the experience if a fixed cap already holds both builds at the display limit. Conversely, a similar average FPS may feel better if long frame-time spikes disappear.
Choose the right comparison goal
Player-facing upgrade test
Use a production-like build, representative play, the user’s normal display policy and settings that players can select. Emphasize frame pacing, loading behavior and demanding scenes. Keep profiling overlays off unless they are part of the published capture, and disclose any capture overhead.

Engineering diagnosis
Use isolated scenes, detailed timing counters and profiling builds to identify a subsystem or regression. Mark the result as diagnostic. A profiling build can answer “where is time going?” without answering “what will players experience in the shipped build?”
Platform or configuration study
If the question concerns several GPUs, consoles, operating systems or player configurations, treat each as a separate controlled comparison. The Unity benchmarking example that uses one project across differing platform and player configurations illustrates why configuration must be described; it is an example, not a universal protocol.
Publish a transparent result
A reader should be able to reconstruct the test from the article. Include a compact configuration table before the results.
| Field | Example of what to disclose |
|---|---|
| Game and workload | Scene or benchmark name, route, duration, starting state and number of slices |
| Engine builds | Exact old and new versions, project revision and build type |
| Hardware | CPU, GPU, memory, storage, display and power mode |
| Software | OS build, graphics driver, rendering API and active background policy |
| Graphics | Resolution, quality settings, scalable options, dynamic-resolution state and texture settings |
| Synchronization | VSync, frame cap, refresh rate and adaptive-sync state |
| Measurement | Tool or in-engine counter, overlay state, capture method and timing units |
| Repetitions | Number of runs, warm-up rule, summary statistic and observed spread |
Then show results per version and workload slice. A useful table has columns for run number, average FPS, average frame time, frame-time spread or percentile, game-thread time, render-thread time and GPU time. Use “not available” when a timing is not exposed rather than filling the cell with an inference.
Finish with a narrowly worded conclusion: identify which workload changed, by how much in the measured configuration, whether the difference exceeded the observed variation and what remains unknown on other hardware or scenes.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Changing several variables at once
Symptom: the new build also uses a different resolution, driver or quality preset. Correction: restore the baseline controls, or report the test as a combined configuration upgrade rather than an engine-only comparison.
Comparing editor and shipping builds
Symptom: one run includes editor instrumentation or development checks. Correction: build both versions with matching production or diagnostic intent.
Best Value
Using a single run
Symptom: a favorable result cannot be reproduced. Correction: repeat the route, publish the spread and apply the same warm-up rule to both versions.
Relying on average FPS
Symptom: the average rises while gameplay still hitches. Correction: inspect frame-time traces and long-frame behavior.
Leaving a cap undisclosed
Symptom: both versions report the same FPS despite different uncapped capability. Correction: state VSync and cap settings and, when useful, add a separately labeled uncapped diagnostic run.

Symptom: a particle or rendering microbenchmark is used to generalize to the whole title. Correction: label the subsystem scope and add representative gameplay.
Overgeneralizing the conclusion
Symptom: one title is used to rank every game on an engine. Correction: limit the claim to the tested project, hardware, build and workload, then run additional titles before making a broader statement.
A repeatable checklist
- Define whether the goal is player experience, diagnosis or a platform study.
- Choose a built-in benchmark or scripted representative route.
- Freeze hardware, OS, driver, resolution, graphics options and synchronization policy.
- Build both engine versions with matching settings and record unavoidable differences.
- Standardize warm-up, cache treatment, route, duration and restart procedure.
- Repeat enough times to observe ordinary variation; never select only the best run.
- Capture FPS, frame time and available game-thread, render-thread and GPU timings.
- Compare frame pacing and meaningful workload slices, not only one average.
- State the measurement tool, overlay state, repetitions and spread.
- Write a conclusion limited to the tested game and configuration.
Bottom line
A fair old-versus-new engine comparison is a controlled experiment: same game workload, same target system, matching settings and builds, repeated runs, and measurements in milliseconds as well as FPS. CPU/GPU timings and frame-time distributions explain why a result changed, while explicit VSync, cap and warm-up disclosures prevent misleading conclusions. Treat the outcome as evidence about that title under those conditions—not as a universal verdict on the engine.
