Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIn a chaotic co-op game, make each message short, specific, and actionable: identify what matters, give its location or status if you know it, then say what you need teammates to do. Use voice when the detail or urgency calls for it; use a ping, text chat, or emote when a quick marker is enough. Before a match, check both the game’s communication settings and any voice app you use—input mode, microphone, routing, and incoming volume can all affect whether a message gets through.
Make callouts easy to act on
When several players are talking and combat sounds compete for attention, teammates have little time to interpret a long explanation. Aim to give them the information they need to decide what to do next. A useful callout usually names the relevant threat or situation, adds a location or state when known, and gives a clear request if one is needed. This is practical guidance, not a tested formula: the right level of detail depends on the game and the moment.

Use a simple message shape
Try this order: what is happening; where or in what state; what action would help. Include only the parts that matter. For example, “Two enemies at the north door; hold this room” identifies a threat, its location, and a requested response. “I’m reviving; cover me” gives a status and a request. These are illustrative callouts, not quotations or validated scripts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the location is uncertain, say so rather than guessing. If a player or objective is already obvious to the team, leave out details that add no value. The aim is not to make every message sound formal; it is to make the useful part understandable before teammates have to return their attention to the game.

Put urgent information first
Lead with the information that changes what a teammate should do now. A warning about an immediate threat belongs ahead of background or explanation. If more context is necessary, add it after the urgent detail—or wait until the team has a quieter moment. Avoid repeating low-value narration while others are trying to hear game cues. Repeat a message when it was missed or the situation changed, not merely to fill silence.
Make requests concrete
“Help” can mean several things. If you know what would help, name it: cover a revive, hold a doorway, regroup, or watch a particular route. If you do not know the best response, a concise status update may be more useful than an uncertain command. Match the strength of the request to what you know; a confident but inaccurate location can send teammates in the wrong direction.
Choose the channel that fits the message
Voice is only one way to coordinate. The available tools depend on the game, platform, and settings. Embark’s The Finals in-game communication guide lists voice chat, text chat, a ping wheel, and emotes. Halo’s Halo Infinite settings guide documents voice and text options, muting, and text-to-speech controls. Those examples do not mean every co-op game offers the same tools or uses the same labels.
Use voice for detail that needs interpretation
Voice can convey a changing situation or a request that is difficult to express with a single marker. It is useful when teammates need to know not just where something is, but what is happening or what response you need. Keep the transmission focused: say the key detail, then stop so others can respond and listen for the game.

Use a ping or emote for a quick, visible signal
A ping can mark a location, target, or route without requiring a spoken sentence. An emote may communicate a simple intent if the game gives it a clear meaning. Use the marker the game actually provides and check that it communicates what you intend; a marker that teammates cannot interpret is not a substitute for a needed explanation.
Use text when speaking is unavailable or unwanted
Text chat can work when you have no microphone, prefer not to speak, or need to pass information without transmitting voice. It may be too slow to compose or read during an intense fight, so consider whether a ping or brief voice message would be more practical in that moment. If a teammate cannot hear voice or has asked not to use it, use the game’s available non-voice channels instead of treating voice as mandatory.
There is no universally best channel. Choose based on urgency, complexity, the player’s circumstances, and what teammates can receive. A quick marker may be enough for a location; a complicated change of plan may need a sentence. When possible, keep voice for information that benefits from explanation and avoid turning it into continuous commentary.
Choose between push-to-talk and voice activity
If you use Discord for voice, it offers two input modes: push-to-talk transmits while you hold a chosen key, while voice activity transmits automatically when speech is detected. Discord describes both modes and the related sensitivity and release-delay controls in its voice input modes guide, published March 25, 2025. The choice is a trade-off, not a rule about which mode makes someone a better communicator.

| Input mode | How transmission starts | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Push-to-talk | Hold the selected key to transmit. | You must be able to reach and hold the control while playing. Discord describes relatively no delay on key press for this mode. |
| Voice activity | Speech detection starts transmission automatically. | You do not have to hold a key, but sensitivity needs to suit your voice and environment so ordinary background sound does not trigger the microphone. Discord notes an inherent 200 ms delay, plus server distance, for voice activity. |
The delay figures above describe Discord’s documented modes, not all voice systems or in-game chat. Actual controls and behavior can vary by game, platform, and voice service. Consider how you play: if you can reliably hold a control during combat, push-to-talk may help you avoid sending unwanted sound. If holding a key gets in the way, voice activity may be more convenient, provided its detection is adjusted for your setup.
Adjust voice activity rather than accepting every trigger
In a voice-activity setup, adjust input sensitivity so ordinary background noise does not activate transmission while a quiet voice still registers. Test at the volume and distance you actually use. A threshold that is too sensitive can send noise or game audio; one that is too restrictive can clip or miss your speech. Discord also documents a push-to-talk release delay, which affects how long transmission continues after you let go of the key. Set it so the end of a short phrase is not cut off, without leaving the microphone open longer than you want.
Make push-to-talk usable in a real match
Choose a control you can reach without losing the ability to play, then test that holding and releasing it feel reliable. If your chosen key conflicts with an in-game action or is awkward for your hand position, the mode may create more friction than it removes. Keep transmissions brief enough that you can release the control promptly after the useful message.

A voice mode alone cannot fix a wrong microphone, a muted teammate, or chat routed somewhere you cannot hear. Check settings in both the game and any separate voice app. Menu names differ, so treat the labels below as examples rather than instructions that apply to every title.

- Check the game’s communication options. Find its voice, text, ping, and mute controls. Confirm that the channel you intend to use is enabled and that the relevant teammates can receive it.
- Select the intended microphone and input mode. In the game or voice app, check the input device and whether transmission uses push-to-talk or voice activation. If the microphone is not being picked up, verify the selected device before changing other settings.
- Check chat routing and incoming voice volume. Make sure teammate voice is routed to the device you are listening on and is loud enough to hear alongside the game. Raise or lower chat and game audio as needed; the available controls vary by title and platform.
- Test whether teammates can hear and understand you. Use a quiet moment or the game’s available test controls, if it has them. Speak at your normal volume, then check that your words are not being clipped and that background noise is not dominating.
- Try the setup under realistic conditions. Check that the microphone still works when you are playing normally and that incoming voices remain audible. Change one setting at a time if something is wrong so you can identify what helped.
What game-specific examples show
Defaults are not universal. Embark’s support page for The Finals, last updated March 20, 2026, says voice chat is on by default there; PC defaults to push-to-talk, while console defaults to voice activation. Those settings are specific to that game and platform, not a general recommendation or a promise about another title. The guide also lists voice, text, a ping wheel, and emotes as communication options.
Bungie’s Destiny Audio Guide describes console routing choices for voice chat—headset-only, speaker-only, and blended—and PC options including push-to-talk and team voice. Bungie cautions that blended audio can cause problems for some players using gaming headphones, including feedback. If teammates hear echo or feedback, inspect the routing choice and microphone setup rather than assuming that the voice channel itself is broken.
Halo’s settings documentation also covers voice and text, muting, and text-to-speech controls. Check the guide and the in-game menus for the title and platform you actually use: a setting documented for one game is not evidence that another has the same feature or default.

Reduce missed messages and audio problems
If teammates say they cannot hear you
- Confirm the correct input device is selected in the game or voice app.
- Check that voice chat is enabled and that your chosen transmission mode is active.
- For push-to-talk, verify that you are holding the selected control; for voice activity, adjust sensitivity and check whether speech is being detected.
- Check whether you or a teammate is muted, and confirm that the relevant team or voice channel is selected.
These are checks, not guarantees: a game’s controls and labels vary, and a voice app may have separate settings from the game.

If teammates hear noise, echo, or feedback
- With voice activity, adjust sensitivity so ordinary background noise does not trigger transmission, while keeping your speech detectable.
- Check the game’s voice routing. In Destiny, Bungie specifically notes that blended console audio can cause feedback for some players using gaming headphones.
- Check microphone placement and the selected input device if the problem persists; a routing change may help, but the right setting depends on the equipment and game.
A microphone-equipped headset is optional equipment, not a proven communication fix. Official game support describes headset routing and microphone-based chat, but that does not establish that buying a particular headset—or buying one at all—makes a player communicate more effectively. Start with the controls and equipment you already have, and consider a headset only if it solves a practical issue in your setup.
If teammates keep talking over one another
Make your own messages shorter, reserve voice for information that needs explanation, and use pings or text when those channels are sufficient. Leave a pause after a callout so others can respond. If a teammate misses information, repeat the part that changes their next decision rather than replaying a full narration of the fight. These are coordination habits, not performance claims established by the support documentation.
Use optional PC overlays only if they help
Discord’s Game Overlay can expose chat interface and voice controls while you play. Its Game Overlay 101 guide, published April 2, 2025, says the feature is Windows-only and does not function on Mac or Linux. Treat it as an optional PC workflow, not a requirement for voice chat. If the overlay does not work, use the ordinary app or in-game controls and check the current support page for compatibility changes.
An overlay is useful only if it makes controls easier to reach without distracting from play. If it obscures the game, is unavailable on your system, or adds complexity, skip it; clear comms depend more on a working input, suitable routing, and concise messages than on an overlay.
Quick Recap
A quick pre-match communication check
- Know which channels the game actually offers: voice, text, pings, emotes, or some combination.
- Confirm your microphone, input mode, and the correct voice or team channel.
- Check incoming voice volume and routing so teammates are audible.
- Use a short callout that identifies the situation and location, then state a request when one is clear.
- Keep non-urgent narration off comms while teammates need to hear game cues.
- Switch to a ping or text when it communicates the point more simply—or when speaking is not an option.
