How to Collect Taxes for Stripe Payments in WordPress

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To collect tax on Stripe payments in WordPress, first identify how customers pay: through a WooCommerce store or a standalone payment form. WooCommerce sites can connect Stripe Tax for WooCommerce for automatic tax calculation and reporting; standalone forms can use a plugin such as WP Simple Pay, which offers automatic Stripe Tax calculation, merchant-entered fixed rates, or no tax. In either setup, you are responsible for determining where you must register and collect tax: configuring Stripe does not register your business with a tax authority.

Choose the setup that matches your WordPress site

Standalone payment forms A compatible form plugin such as WP Simple Pay can use Stripe Tax for location-based automatic calculation, fixed rates entered by the merchant, or no tax. Manually maintained Stripe Tax Rates The merchant creates and maintains rates and applies them to invoices or Checkout sessions; Stripe does not calculate which tax applies. That you have determined the applicable tax codes and rates and can keep them current.

Set up tax for a WooCommerce store

  1. Connect Stripe to WooCommerce. Use the Stripe extension and check its current requirements before installation. WooCommerce lists supported Stripe countries, recent PHP, WordPress, and WooCommerce versions, and an HTTPS site among its requirements.
  2. Install and configure Stripe Tax for WooCommerce. The connector integrates Stripe Tax with WooCommerce for automatic calculation and reporting. Follow the plugin’s current connection and setup instructions.
  3. Configure Stripe Tax and your registrations. Set the relevant jurisdictions in Stripe so the account reflects where your business is registered to collect tax. A Stripe registration entry is not government registration.
  4. Review test orders and reports. Confirm the tax calculation and order breakdown behave as expected for the locations and products you sell. Establish separately whether you or a filing partner must submit returns and remit tax; the integration’s reporting or filing support does not establish that every merchant’s filings are completed automatically.

Set up tax for standalone payment forms

  1. Connect the form plugin to Stripe. WP Simple Pay documents tax collection on a per-form basis; its automatic location-based calculation depends on connecting Stripe through Stripe Connect.
  2. Activate Stripe Tax in the Stripe Dashboard. This is required for the plugin’s documented automatic calculation option. Confirm your current plugin plan and account eligibility before depending on a particular feature.
  3. Configure the form to collect relevant customer details. The form can request address information and show an amount breakdown. Collect the information needed for the tax calculation and checkout experience you have configured.
  4. Select the form’s tax method. Choose automatic calculation with Stripe Tax, fixed rates you maintain, or no tax. A fixed rate is not an automatic determination of the customer’s applicable tax.
  5. Check the customer-facing total and records. Verify the displayed breakdown and resulting payment in your account before relying on the form for live transactions.

Automatic Stripe Tax versus manual rates

These options do different jobs. Stripe Tax can calculate tax automatically when correctly configured. Stripe Tax Rates are rate values that you create and maintain; they do not determine which taxes apply to a transaction. Stripe’s help documentation states: “With Tax Rates, Stripe does not calculate relevant taxes for you, and you maintain your log of applicable tax codes and rates.”

Use manual rates only if you can determine the relevant tax treatment and maintain the rates as requirements change. The right choice depends on the places you sell, what you sell, and your registrations—not just on which plugin is easiest to install.

Registration, filing, and remittance are separate responsibilities

Stripe Tax configuration is not a substitute for registering with a tax authority. Stripe’s Tax Calculation API documentation says: “Stripe doesn’t register on your behalf with the relevant authorities when you create a Tax Registration object.” The object records where you are registered to collect within Stripe; it does not complete a government registration.

Taxability and registration obligations vary by jurisdiction and product. Determine where you are required to register and collect before configuring those locations in Stripe. Also identify who files returns and remits collected amounts: your business or a filing partner. Stripe’s general guidance recommends consulting a qualified accountant for obligations specific to your circumstances.

Check these details before launch

  • Site route: Confirm whether checkout is handled by WooCommerce or standalone payment forms; their integrations and configuration differ.
  • Jurisdictions: Configure only locations that reflect your actual tax registrations and obligations.
  • Product treatment: Verify how the goods or services you sell are classified for relevant tax rules.
  • Checkout information: Ensure the payment flow collects the customer information needed for the selected calculation method.
  • Operational ownership: Confirm who monitors reports, files returns, and remits tax; do not assume these tasks are automatic.
  • Compatibility and availability: Check current plugin requirements, supported jurisdictions, account requirements, and plan features, since these can change.

What Stripe’s historical coverage announcement means

Stripe’s June 10, 2021 launch announcement described Stripe Tax coverage as “over 30 countries” and all U.S. states at that time. That is a historical launch figure, not a current coverage total. Check Stripe’s current availability information before relying on support for a particular jurisdiction.
