How to Clone Your Existing Drive to a New NVMe SSD

A safe NVMe SSD migration starts with compatibility checks and a backup. Learn how to connect the new drive, choose compatible cloning software, and confirm the clone boots.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To clone an existing drive to a new NVMe SSD, first confirm the computer supports that SSD, back up important files, connect the new drive, and use cloning software that supports your operating system, both drives, and their connection method. Check the source and destination by model and capacity before starting: cloning overwrites the destination. Afterward, install or select the new SSD as the boot drive and verify the computer actually starts from it before wiping the old drive.

What to check before replacing your drive

Confirm the computer supports the SSD

Look up the exact computer or motherboard model and consult its storage or upgrade manual. Verify that the slot supports NVMe over PCIe—not merely the M.2 form factor—and check the drive length, slot key and any physical or thermal constraints. M.2 describes a form factor; it does not guarantee NVMe compatibility. Samsung notes that its NVMe drives use an M-Key and recommends checking the computer’s documentation or asking its provider to verify the slot: Samsung Internal SSD Installation FAQ.

Check capacity and partition layout

Choose a destination with enough capacity for the data and partitions the selected cloning tool will copy. For Samsung Data Migration, the source disk must be smaller than the target; do not assume that requirement applies to other tools. Samsung’s manual also warns that cloning an MBR disk to a drive larger than 2 TB can leave capacity beyond 2 TB unallocated. Check the chosen utility’s partition resizing options and inspect the resulting layout after cloning.

Protect your files and the new drive

Make a separate backup of important files and verify that you can open it. A clone is not a substitute for a recoverable backup. Samsung Data Migration warns that cloning deletes all data on the target and that data erased by the software cannot be recovered. Copy anything you need from the new SSD elsewhere before using it as the destination. Samsung’s Data Migration User Manual, English US revision v6 says to back up anything on the target that you want to keep.

Choose a cloning tool that fits your setup

Use software whose current support information covers your source drive, destination SSD, operating system, and connection method. A manufacturer utility is not automatically a universal drive-cloning tool.

  • Samsung Data Migration: Samsung’s manual limits the utility to listed Samsung SSD models and supported Windows versions. It supports MBR and GPT, but documents configuration-specific limitations. It cannot clone an encrypted drive unless its password is removed first; damaged sources, dynamic disks, multiple installed operating systems, and outdated chipset drivers can also cause problems. These are limitations documented for Samsung’s utility, not universal rules for all cloning software. Samsung says OEM recovery partitions are generally not cloned, with an exception for certain Samsung recovery setups. Check the current guidance and the destination partition map.
  • Crucial’s cloning utility: Crucial’s NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD Install Guide describes cloning software provided with Crucial SSDs. Its guide explains an automatic clone mode and notes that a larger destination can initially appear to have only the source drive’s capacity if partition or space settings need adjustment. Check the utility’s current eligibility and resizing controls.

Do not assume a cloning tool can copy an encrypted, damaged, or unusual source just because it recognizes the drives. Check its specific requirements before proceeding, especially if the source has multiple operating systems or a complex partition layout.

Connect the new NVMe SSD

Use a second internal slot if available

Follow the computer or motherboard maker’s instructions to connect the SSD in a compatible second slot. Confirm that the slot supports NVMe and the drive’s physical length before installing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a USB NVMe enclosure if there is only one internal slot

A compatible USB NVMe enclosure can connect the destination externally while the existing drive remains installed. The enclosure solves a connection problem, but it does not guarantee that a particular cloning program supports a USB-connected target or works with that enclosure’s chipset. Verify both before cloning. Plugable’s enclosure cloning guide lists compatibility information for its own enclosure and named software; those examples should not be generalized to every enclosure or utility.

Clone the source drive to the NVMe SSD

  1. Get the utility from its manufacturer or publisher. Check that its stated support covers your computer’s operating system, source and destination drives, and whether the new SSD is connected internally or over USB.
  2. Identify both drives before starting. Compare drive model and capacity to distinguish the existing source from the new destination. Select the new SSD as the target and read any warning that it will be erased. Stop if the drive identities are unclear.
  3. Review the partitions and resize options. Use the utility’s own controls where you need to adjust or move partitions. Check whether the tool copies recovery partitions and whether its layout can use the destination’s full capacity.
  4. Start the clone and let the software report completion. There is no reliable universal completion time in the cited manufacturer guides; data volume, source condition, connection interface, and software affect duration. Do not disconnect a drive while the utility is working.

Install the cloned SSD and boot from it

  1. Shut down the computer. Follow the device maker’s service instructions before removing, moving, or installing drives. Samsung’s SSD upgrade guidance illustrates locating the slot, removing its screw, inserting the SSD, and securing it; the exact procedure varies by computer.
  2. Install the new SSD as directed. If the old drive will remain connected, make sure firmware is set to start from the new drive’s boot entry. Firmware menu labels and paths vary by model.
  3. Check which drive actually booted. A successful Windows startup does not by itself prove the computer started from the clone if the old drive is still installed. Use the computer’s firmware boot options or operating-system drive information to confirm the active boot drive.
  4. Verify the system and files. Check that the operating system starts, important files are present, and essential applications work. Inspect the SSD’s reported capacity and partition layout; if space remains unallocated, adjust partitions only with an appropriate disk-management workflow.
  5. Keep the old drive intact for now. Do not erase or repurpose it until the new SSD has booted successfully and you have verified the backup.

Common reasons a clone may not work as expected

  • The computer does not detect the SSD: Recheck the exact model’s NVMe/PCIe support, slot key, drive length, and installation instructions. An M.2 slot may not support NVMe.
  • The cloning tool rejects the target: Check brand eligibility, operating-system support, and whether the tool permits a USB-connected destination. Samsung Data Migration has restrictions on eligible Samsung models and supported Windows versions.
  • The source is encrypted or has an unusual configuration: Review the chosen tool’s limitations. Samsung specifically documents encryption, damaged sources, dynamic disks, and multiple installed operating systems as possible problems for its utility.
  • The new drive appears smaller than expected: Inspect the partition map and unallocated space, then check the tool’s resizing options. Samsung Data Migration requires the source disk to be smaller than the target, and Samsung documents an MBR-related limitation for space beyond 2 TB.
  • The computer still starts from the old drive: Check firmware boot options and select the new SSD’s boot entry. Verify the active boot drive before disconnecting or erasing the source.
