How to Clone a Handheld Gaming PC’s SSD Without Reinstalling Windows

Cloning can preserve a Windows handheld’s existing setup when you replace its SSD. Confirm the exact model and drive format, back up files, find your BitLocker key, and verify the new drive before reusing the old one.

You can move a Windows handheld’s existing setup to a larger SSD by cloning the old drive to the new one, then installing the clone. First confirm your exact device model, Windows installation, and SSD size: drive formats and replacement steps vary. Back up important files and find your BitLocker recovery key before you begin.

First confirm your handheld and its operating system

This is a Windows-drive procedure, not a universal handheld-PC upgrade guide. Check the device’s exact model and the operating system currently installed before choosing an SSD or opening the case. A Steam Deck running SteamOS follows a separate SteamOS installation and repair path; do not apply Windows instructions to it. See Steam Support’s SteamOS Installation and Repair.

SSD dimensions differ even within product families. ASUS’s October 15, 2025 guide specifies these sizes for the covered ROG models:

These specifications apply to the listed ASUS models, not every handheld gaming PC. Match the replacement drive and any enclosure to your own model’s documented M.2 size and NVMe interface. ASUS’s ROG SSD upgrade guide describes user replacement and enclosure-based cloning for its covered models, but does not provide a cloning-software walkthrough.

Cloning or factory recovery: choose before you start

Route What happens to the existing setup? What you need Important trade-off
Clone the old SSD to the new one Cloning aims to copy the existing Windows installation, files, applications, game installs, and configuration. A compatible enclosure to connect the target SSD, cloning software, and a compatible replacement drive. Clone procedures, partition handling, and boot behavior depend on the software and device. ASUS acknowledges enclosure-based cloning but does not document its steps.
ASUS Cloud Recovery Restores the OS storage device to its original state and erases data on that device. A supported ASUS device, network connection, and power. This is a factory-recovery route, not a way to retain the old setup. ASUS estimates about 1–3 hours, depending on network quality and system configuration.

ASUS’s Cloud Recovery FAQ, updated February 24, 2026, explains the erasure and recovery requirements. Cloning and recovery serve different goals; available recovery support depends on the model.

Prepare the data and equipment

  • Back up essential files independently. Do not make the old SSD your only copy of anything important. ASUS says BitLocker-protected files need to be unlocked with the recovery key to back them up.
  • Locate your BitLocker recovery key. Do this before the hardware change. The key may be needed to access encrypted data; do not assume every clone will handle encryption identically or avoid a recovery prompt.
  • Check enclosure compatibility. The enclosure must support the target drive’s physical M.2 size and NVMe interface. An enclosure that fits a different M.2 size or drive interface may not work.
  • Use the cloning software’s current instructions. Follow its directions for selecting the source, target, partitions, and completion checks. The old SSD is the source; the replacement SSD is the target. Reversing those selections can overwrite the wrong drive.
  • Keep the old SSD intact. Do not erase, format, or reuse it until the replacement boots and you have verified the result.

Clone the drive and install the replacement

  1. Connect the new SSD to the handheld. Put it in a compatible NVMe enclosure and connect the enclosure to the device. The old internal SSD remains the source and the external replacement is the target.
  2. Run the cloning software according to its instructions. Confirm the source and target carefully, include the required partitions, and wait for the software to report completion. Exact screens and partition options vary by tool, so there is no safe universal button-by-button sequence.
  3. Shut the handheld down fully. Do not open it while it is running or merely asleep.
  4. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model. For the Ally-family models in ASUS’s guide, discharge the battery to 25% or below and remove microSD cards before opening the unit. ASUS lists a size 0 Phillips screwdriver and a thin plastic pick for its covered procedure. Disconnect the battery before replacing the SSD, and handle any back-panel ribbon cable carefully; ASUS warns that pulling it carelessly can tear it.
  5. Swap the SSD and reassemble the device. Follow the model-specific directions for disconnecting and reconnecting the battery and other components. Do not treat a guide for a visually similar model as interchangeable.
  6. Boot from the replacement drive. If Windows starts, check the installation and files before making any changes to the old drive.

Verify the clone before relying on it

There is no universal manufacturer-certified clone-validation checklist in the cited guidance. Use these practical checks before erasing or reusing the original SSD:

If cloning is not suitable or does not work

For a supported ROG device, ASUS Cloud Recovery is an alternative when a fresh factory setup is acceptable. It requires Wi-Fi or LAN and power, and ASUS estimates approximately 1–3 hours depending on network quality and device configuration. It restores the OS storage device to its original state, erasing its data, so back up files first and do not mistake it for a data-preserving migration. Consult the model-specific ASUS instructions for availability and steps.
