How to Clear the Windows 11 Font Cache When Text Looks Blurry

Restarting Windows Font Cache Service is a reasonable check for blurry text, but the cause may instead be an app, font, scaling, or rendering issue.

Restarting the Windows Font Cache Service is a sensible first troubleshooting step, but Microsoft does not identify a corrupted font cache as the general cause of blurry text. First check whether the problem is limited to one app or font, and whether display scaling or text rendering better explains it. Use manual cache-file deletion only as a cautious, advanced fallback.

First identify where the blur appears

Check whether text looks blurry in one app or throughout Windows, and whether the issue affects a particular font or all text. This distinction helps direct the fix: an app-specific problem may reflect how that app handles fonts, while blur across the desktop points toward display or rendering settings.

Check that the font is installed

Open Settings > Personalization > Fonts and confirm that the font appears in the installed-font list. Windows supports custom fonts, but not every app supports them; a font working in one program does not guarantee it will render the same way in another. Microsoft’s font-management guidance describes viewing and managing installed fonts and notes that app support varies.

Check display scaling before clearing files

Display scaling and text rendering can matter more than the cache. Microsoft documented a specific Windows 11 issue in which CJK text appeared unclear in Chromium-based browsers at 96 DPI (100% scaling), following the March 2025 Preview Update that introduced Noto fonts as fallbacks. Microsoft identified limited pixel density as a factor and said, “Increasing the display scaling improves clarity by enhancing text rendering.” This is a narrow scenario, not a general explanation for blurry text. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 issue notice.

If your symptoms match that specific case, try increasing display scaling in Windows display settings and check whether the text becomes clearer. If the problem is elsewhere, treat scaling as one diagnostic check rather than assuming it is the cause.

Restart Windows Font Cache Service

Restarting the service is a relatively low-risk cache-related check. Microsoft documents this procedure for troubleshooting Windows Search, not as a guaranteed fix for blurry fonts. Microsoft’s Windows Search troubleshooting steps include restarting Windows Font Cache Service.

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter to open Services.
  2. Find Windows Font Cache Service in the list.
  3. Right-click it and choose Stop. If Windows does not let you stop it, do not force the change; restart the PC and check the symptom again.
  4. After the service has stopped, right-click it and choose Start.
  5. Reopen the affected app and check whether the text is clearer.

If the service restart changes nothing, move on to checks that fit the symptom rather than repeating it or assuming the cache is damaged.

Manual cache-file deletion is an uncertain advanced fallback

An anonymous response on Microsoft Q&A suggests stopping the service and deleting files in C:WindowsServiceProfilesLocalServiceAppDataLocalFontCache and C:WindowsSystem32FNTCACHE.DAT, then restarting Windows. The response says taking ownership of the folder may be necessary. This is community guidance; Microsoft’s official troubleshooting pages cited here do not validate file deletion as a blurry-text fix. Read the Q&A response.

Because these are protected system locations and changing ownership can alter access controls, do not take ownership casually or delete files if you are unsure. For most readers, stopping and starting the service is the safer cache-related check. Consider manual deletion only if you understand the system-file risks and can recover from an unexpected result.

Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows file problems

If you are also seeing signs of missing or corrupted Windows system files, Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. These commands repair broader Windows image or system-file issues; they are not routine font-cache clearing steps. Microsoft’s system-file repair guidance gives the sequence:
