How to Clear The Microsoft Teams Cache [On Desktop & Mobile]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft Teams keeps local copies of messages, attachments, thumbnails, and sign-in/session state to make the app feel fast. When that local cache gets stale or corrupted, you can see symptoms like spinning loaders, missing chat history, broken attachments, or repeated sign-in prompts.

Clearing the Microsoft Teams cache is often the fastest self-serve fix—especially when Teams is behaving inconsistently across devices or after an update. The process differs by platform, so you’ll find Windows, macOS, iPhone/iPad, and Android instructions below.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Good news: clearing cache typically doesn’t delete your actual Teams content. It resets what’s stored locally on the device so Teams can rebuild it from the server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why clearing the Microsoft Teams cache actually helps

Teams caches multiple things locally: conversation metadata, cached media thumbnails, attachment previews, and sometimes GPU/graphics-related assets used by the client. When those files don’t match what the server expects, Teams can render the wrong state or fail to refresh cleanly.

Logitech Brio 101 Full HD 1080p Webcam for Streaming and Meetings - Black
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
  • Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works

Common “cache-like” symptoms include:

  • Chats or channels show blank/older content that won’t refresh
  • Attachments fail to preview or download
  • Calls or meetings open intermittently (or not at all)
  • Teams keeps prompting for sign-in after you already signed in
  • Search returns incomplete results or stalls

Before you start: what to know (and what you won’t lose)

Clearing cache is about local files. It should not delete your organization’s Teams data (messages, files in SharePoint/OneDrive, or your mailbox). What you may notice after a cache reset:

  • Teams may take longer to load the first time (it rebuilds cache)
  • You might need to sign in again depending on the cache location cleared and your platform
  • Custom app settings are usually preserved, but a full reinstall may reset some preferences

Also, make sure you close Teams completely before clearing desktop cache folders—leaving background processes running can prevent the files from being removed.

Clear the Microsoft Teams cache on Windows

Windows has two common Teams desktop experiences: the newer “New Teams” and the “classic” client used historically. You’ll see one or both of the following options depending on your account and rollout state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Method 1: Use the built-in Clear cache option (if available)

Some Teams builds include a built-in cache reset button. If you see it, it’s the cleanest approach because it handles the right folders automatically.

  1. Open Microsoft Teams on your Windows desktop.
  2. Click your profile picture (top-right).
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Look for Clear cache (often under an About or similar area, depending on build).
  5. Confirm the action and allow Teams to restart.

If you don’t see Clear cache, use Method 2 below.

Method 2: Manually clear the Teams cache folders

This method targets the most common cache directories inside your user profile. You’ll remove local cached data so Teams can rebuild it.

  1. Fully quit Teams.
    • Click the Teams … menu in the system tray (near the clock) if present.
    • Select Quit.
    • If it won’t quit, open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), then end tasks for Microsoft Teams and any Teams-related processes.
  2. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
  3. Paste this path and press Enter:
    %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams
  4. Inside the Teams folder, delete these cache folders if they exist:
    • Cache
    • Code Cache (if present)
    • GPUCache (if present)
    • blob_storage (if present)
  5. Now also check the following folder and delete the same-style cache folders if they exist:
    %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams\Cache
  6. Optional but useful: clear local media/preview caches by deleting tmp or other cache-like folders if present in the Teams directory.
  7. Reopen Microsoft Teams. Sign in again if prompted.

Why the exact names matter: Teams cache layouts can change slightly between versions, but Cache, GPUCache, and blob_storage are common offenders.

Method 3: Clear cache after a controlled restart with the right shutdown order

If Teams is misbehaving after a system update, files sometimes remain locked until you stop every background component. This variant focuses on ensuring everything is actually shut down.

  1. Close Teams via the tray icon or menu: Quit.
  2. Open Task Manager and end:
    • Microsoft Teams
    • Any Teams-related processes showing continued CPU usage
  3. Use Method 2 to delete the cache folders.
  4. Restart Windows (optional, but helpful if file locks persist), then open Teams.

Clear the Microsoft Teams cache on macOS

macOS uses different user-library paths. The principle is the same: close Teams, remove local cache directories, then relaunch so the client rebuilds them.

Method 1: Use the built-in Clear cache option (if available)

If your Teams build includes the cache reset control, use it first.

  1. Open Microsoft Teams.
  2. Click your profile picture or Settings.
  3. Find and select Clear cache if present.
  4. Confirm and restart Teams.

If you don’t see it, follow Method 2.

Method 2: Manually remove Teams cache folders

Start by quitting Teams fully, then remove the cache directories inside your user Library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Quit Microsoft Teams:
    • Click Microsoft Teams in the menu bar.
    • Select Quit Microsoft Teams.
  2. Open Finder → Go → Go to Folder…
  3. Navigate to:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams
  4. Delete cache-like folders if they exist:
    • Cache
    • Code Cache (if present)
    • GPUCache (if present)
    • blob_storage (if present)
  5. Optionally also check this folder and clear cache-like subfolders:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.microsoft.teams
  6. Reopen Microsoft Teams. Sign in again if prompted.

Clear the Microsoft Teams cache on iPhone and iPad (iOS)

iOS doesn’t let you manually delete app cache folders the way desktop OSes do. The reliable reset is to remove the app (or offload it) so iOS can purge cached content.

Method 1: Offload or delete the app (most reliable on iOS)

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap General → iPhone Storage (or iPad Storage).
  3. Find Microsoft Teams.
  4. Choose one of the following:
    • Offload App (keeps documents, removes the app binary and cached data)
    • Delete App (removes the app and its local data)
  5. Reinstall from the App Store.

Method 2: Re-sign in after reinstall

After reinstall, sign in with your work account and wait for Teams to rebuild local caches. If you use multi-factor authentication, keep your verification method handy.

If you rely on pinned chats or local notification settings, you may need to re-check those after reinstall.

Clear the Microsoft Teams cache on Android

Android gives you more direct control. You can clear only cached data (safer) or clear storage (more aggressive), depending on what’s failing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Method 1: Clear cache from Android App info

  1. Open Settings on your Android device.
  2. Go to Apps (or App management).
  3. Find and select Microsoft Teams.
  4. Tap Storage (or Storage & cache).
  5. Select Clear cache.
  6. Open Teams again and sign in if required.

Method 2: Clear storage + reconfigure sign-in

If clearing cache doesn’t fix the issue—especially persistent sign-in loops—try clearing app storage. This removes more than cache and may reset some local app state.

  1. Repeat steps 1–4 above to reach Storage.
  2. Tap Clear storage (or Clear data).
  3. Confirm the prompt.
  4. Reopen Teams and sign in again.

What to do after clearing cache (so Teams starts clean)

After cache removal, Teams needs to rebuild local state. Do these checks immediately after launch.

  • Give it 1–5 minutes to download thumbnails and refresh message indexes.
  • Verify you’re on a stable connection (Wi‑Fi can be enough, but avoid captive portals).
  • Trigger a refresh by opening a chat, scrolling, and waiting for new content to load.
  • If you cleared mobile storage, confirm your sign-in method and any required MFA prompts.

If Teams uses a custom proxy/VPN, reconnect it before checking results—otherwise the client may rebuild cache using blocked endpoints.

Troubleshooting: what if clearing cache didn’t fix it

Cache fixes are effective when the local client state is corrupted. If the issue is actually a server-side problem, identity mismatch, or a networking block, cache clearing won’t fully resolve it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Teams still fails to sign in

  • Windows/macOS: after clearing cache, fully sign out if available, then sign back in. On desktop, ensure you don’t have multiple Teams instances running.
  • Re-check system date/time (wrong time can break tokens). On Windows, Settings → Time & language → Date & time → set to automatic.
  • Try a different network (mobile hotspot) to rule out firewall/proxy token inspection.

Chats load slowly or keep spinning

  • Wait longer during the first rebuild. If it never finishes, clear cache again and force a full app restart.
  • Check storage on your device—low disk space can prevent cache rebuild.
  • On desktop, try disabling VPN temporarily and relaunch Teams.

Meetings won’t open or screen sharing fails

  • On desktop, confirm Teams permissions: camera/microphone access in OS privacy settings.
  • Update Teams to the latest available version; meeting components sometimes change independently from cache logic.
  • If you use hardware acceleration settings (where available), reset them by reinstalling or updating Teams.

You cleared cache but Teams keeps recreating old data

That’s expected behavior to some degree—Teams will rebuild. If you see the same corrupted UI repeatedly, the underlying issue may be a faulty upgrade, a persistently blocked endpoint, or stale account tokens.

  • Clear cache again, then sign out completely and sign back in.
  • If on corporate hardware, check with your IT team for proxy/firewall rules that might break media indexing.

Corporate device policies block changes

Some environments restrict app data deletion or disable local folder modifications. If you can’t remove cache directories, use the supported in-app cache option (if available) or ask IT to assist with an approved remediation workflow.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Deleting folders while Teams is still running. This can cause partial deletion and inconsistent results.
  • Clearing the wrong app’s cache on mobile. Make sure it’s Microsoft Teams, not a device browser or related component.
  • Assuming cache clearing fixes identity issues. If sign-in keeps looping, focus on token/network/time problems.
  • Not restarting the app after clearing desktop cache folders.

Alternatives and related fixes

If cache clearing alone isn’t enough, these options often get you over the finish line.

Repair or reinstall Teams (Windows)

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Search for Microsoft Teams.
  3. If available, choose Repair.
  4. If repair doesn’t help, uninstall Teams, then reinstall from the official Microsoft source.

Reinstalling can remove additional components beyond the cache folders.

Update Teams (desktop) before clearing cache again

If your issue started right after an update, upgrading to the newest version can bring fixes for specific client bugs. After updating, clear cache once more to ensure you’re not stuck with older cached assets.

Check network and DNS

  • Switch between Wi‑Fi and a mobile hotspot
  • Disable VPN temporarily (if your policy allows)
  • Flush DNS and try again (you may need admin rights)

FAQs about Microsoft Teams cache

Does clearing Microsoft Teams cache delete my messages?

No. Clearing cache removes local copies of data the app stored on your device. Your messages live on Microsoft 365/Teams back-end services.

Will I have to sign in again after clearing cache?

Often, yes—especially if you clear storage on mobile or remove larger desktop cache folders. The exact behavior depends on what was cleared and how Teams stored session information on that build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should I clear the Microsoft Teams cache?

There’s no required schedule. Only clear cache when you see persistent symptoms (stuck loading, missing content, broken previews, repeated sign-in prompts) or after a problematic update.

Is there a difference between clearing cache and clearing storage on Android?

Yes. Clear cache removes temporary files; Clear storage (data) removes more local state, which can reset settings and force a fresh sign-in flow.

Why does Teams sometimes rebuild cache for several minutes after clearing it?

Because it needs to re-download thumbnails, message indexes, and media previews from the server. If it takes unusually long, check network stability and device disk space.

Bottom Line

Clearing the Microsoft Teams cache is a practical, low-risk fix for many client-side issues—especially loading loops, broken previews, and stale chat/channel views. On desktop, the most reliable approach is quitting Teams, removing the appropriate cache folders, and relaunching.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On iOS and Android, you’ll typically get the best results by offloading/deleting the app (iOS) or clearing cache/storage from Android App info. If problems persist after a cache reset, move on to update/reinstall and network/token troubleshooting.
