How to Clear the Cache in Chrome on Any Device

Clear Chrome’s cached images and files on desktop or mobile, choose the right time range, and avoid removing cookies or other data by mistake.

In Chrome, open More (the three-dot menu) and choose Delete browsing data. Pick a time range, select Cached images and files, and confirm. Leave cookies and other categories unchecked if you only want to clear the cache.

Clear Chrome’s cache on a computer

  1. Open Chrome and select More (three dots) in the top-right corner.
  2. Select Delete browsing data.
  3. Choose a time range, such as Last hour or All time.
  4. Select Cached images and files. Leave other categories unchecked if you want to clear only the cache.
  5. Select Delete data.

You can also type “Delete browsing data” in Chrome’s address bar and select the suggested Action chip to open the deletion controls. Button labels may vary slightly by Chrome version.

Choose what to delete

Chrome’s cache consists of parts of pages, such as images, saved to help pages load faster on a later visit. Cookies and site data are separate categories. Google describes the cache this way: “The cache remembers parts of pages, like images, to help them open faster during your next visit.”

Choice Useful when What to consider
Cached images and files only A page looks stale, loads incorrectly, or you want to free some local storage. The next visit may be slower while Chrome downloads page content again.
Cache plus cookies or site data You also intend to reset information a site has stored in Chrome. Site preferences or sessions may be affected, and you may need to sign in again.
Other browsing-data categories You intend to remove additional items such as history or autofill data. Read each category before selecting it; passwords and other data are separate from the cache.

On Android, Google says deleting cookies while signed in to Chrome does not sign you out of your Google Account. That does not mean site sessions or settings are unaffected. On Android and iOS, data saved to a Google Account may also be removed across signed-in devices when deleted from the device. Check the category choices and their effects before confirming.

What clearing the cache can—and cannot—fix

Google recommends clearing cached data to troubleshoot loading or formatting problems, prompt Chrome to fetch the latest version of a site, or free local storage. It is a useful first step for a stale page, but it is not a guaranteed fix. A slow first load afterward is expected because Chrome has to fetch removed content again.

Loading problems can also come from a device setting or software, a network connection or equipment, Chrome cookies or extensions, browser memory, or a site outage or maintenance. Google’s troubleshooting sequence includes checking the URL and connection, updating and restarting Chrome, and testing the page in Incognito. If it works in Incognito, deleting browsing data is one next step to try.
