If calls or recordings sound muffled, check whether a case, screen film, adhesive, or debris is blocking a microphone opening before assuming the microphone is broken. Turn the phone off, identify the correct opening for your model, and use only a cleaning method its manufacturer permits. Keep liquids and sharp tools away from the opening; compressed-air advice differs by manufacturer. Test the microphone afterward, and seek authorized service if the problem persists.
Find the microphone before cleaning
Microphone locations vary by phone, and some devices have several microphones used differently by apps and tasks. A pinhole is not necessarily a microphone. Check your phone maker’s hardware diagram or user guide before touching any opening. Google says Pixel phones have three microphones and explains their use in its Pixel microphone and speaker guide.

How to clean a phone microphone without causing damage
- Remove anything that could cover the opening. Take off the case and inspect any protective film, vinyl, adhesive, or accessory that might overlap the microphone. Samsung lists covers and protective vinyl among possible obstructions in its Galaxy microphone troubleshooting guidance.
- Power down and disconnect the phone. Turn it off and unplug cables before cleaning. Google gives this instruction for Pixel phones in its Pixel cleaning guidance.
- Inspect the identified opening in good light. Do not probe it or push visible debris inward. Keep liquids and moisture away from openings; cleaning the phone’s exterior does not mean it is safe to wet the microphone port.
- Use only a permitted method. Samsung India advises using a soft brush or compressed air for Galaxy microphone-port cleaning, while warning against sharp objects and excessive pressure. Its article was last updated November 19, 2025, and notes that screenshots and menus can vary by model and software version. By contrast, Google says not to spray compressed air at a Pixel, and Apple says not to use compressed air on an iPhone. Check the current instructions for your exact model and market before choosing a method. A brush, if permitted, should be used gently on the exterior; do not insert bristles into the opening.
- Test the microphone. Record a short clip with the phone’s recorder or camera app, then play it back. Samsung recommends this test in its Galaxy microphone troubleshooting steps. Disconnect or disable connected audio accessories if appropriate, since audio may be routed through them.
- Run the maker’s diagnostic if available. Samsung recommends testing the microphone through the Members app. If a diagnostic flags a fault, or sound remains poor after checking obstructions and accessories, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider rather than trying to clear an internal blockage yourself.
Why compressed-air advice is not universal
Manufacturer instructions conflict: Google’s Pixel guidance and Apple’s iPhone cleaning guidance warn against compressed air, while Samsung India’s Galaxy microphone article includes it as an option. Samsung US also warns against cans of compressed air in its Galaxy cleaning and drying advice. These statements apply to different manufacturers, regions, and contexts; none establishes compressed air as safe for every phone. Follow the instructions for your exact model and market rather than treating another brand’s advice as interchangeable.

When cleaning will not solve muffled sound
Cleaning is a troubleshooting step when an opening is obstructed, not a guaranteed way to improve audio. If removing a case or accessory and gently cleaning by an approved method does not help, a diagnostic or service inspection is a better next step than applying more pressure or inserting a tool. No universal cleaning interval or quantified improvement is established in the cited manufacturer guidance.
