For a small, contained spill of known oil on an intact household surface, stop the source, absorb and collect the oil, then clean the surface with a suitable method and dry it thoroughly. The right response changes if the oil is used motor oil, the spill is large or unknown, or it has reached soil, a storm drain or water. Do not wash oil into a drain or treat an environmental spill as a household cleaning job.
First, decide whether it is safe to handle yourself
A simple cleanup is appropriate only when the spill is small, contained, the oil is identifiable, and you can stop the source without risk. Keep people and pets away from the slick area; oil makes floors slippery. If you cannot identify the liquid, the spill is spreading, or it involves a large amount, fuel, a drain, soil or water, do not improvise with household cleanup methods. Contact local emergency or environmental responders, or the responsible facility authority, for instructions.

- Cooking oil on an intact floor: absorb the excess, clean with a surface-appropriate detergent method, and dry the floor.
- Used motor oil in a workshop: contain and recover it if safe, and keep recovered oil and oily cleanup material on an appropriate disposal or recycling route.
- Oil on carpet or upholstery: blot rather than rub; solvents can damage backing or foam.
- Oil in the environment or an unknown spill: keep it out of drains and water, and call for situation-specific help.
How to clean a small spill on a hard floor
- Stop the source. Turn off or close the leaking container or appliance if you can do so safely. EPA’s used-oil guidance begins with stopping the oil at its source (EPA: Managing Used Oil—Answers to Frequent Questions for Businesses).
- Keep the spill from spreading. Use absorbent material or cloths to collect excess oil. Work from the outer edge toward the center, lifting material as it becomes saturated rather than pushing oil across the floor.
- Clean the residue with a suitable method. Use detergent and water only if the floor’s care instructions allow it. University of Georgia Cooperative Extension describes absorbent material followed by detergent and water for certain hard-surface oil stains, but its guidance covers multiple surfaces and is not a guarantee for every floor finish (UGA Cooperative Extension: Removing Stains from Clothing and Other Washable Fabrics).
- Collect the cleanup material and dry the floor. Avoid leaving an oily film or wet patch that could cause a slip. Dispose of used cloths or absorbent according to the oil involved and local rules.
Do not pour the collected oil or oily wash water into a storm drain or surface water. If the spill cannot be contained on the floor, stop and seek local guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCarpet and upholstery need a gentler approach
Blot up as much oil as possible with absorbent cloths; rubbing can drive it deeper into the fibers. UGA Cooperative Extension advises applying solvent to a cloth rather than directly to carpet, and stopping if the stain is not transferring. Solvents may damage carpet backing or upholstery foam. Read the product label, pretest in an inconspicuous spot, and ventilate if using a commercial product. For a valuable or delicate item, use a professional cleaner instead of experimenting with solvents (UGA Cooperative Extension stain guidance).
#1 Best Overall
- Sufficient Quantity: you will get 100 pieces of oil spill mats; Ample quantity meet your various uses and replacements demands
- Grade Fluid Absorption: the oil dry absorbent is made of quality polypropylene, the oil absorbing pads instantly lock in engine oil, coolants, transmission fluids, and water grease; Keeping your workshop or garage concrete floor pristine and slip free
- Suitable Size: each oil mat for garage floor measures about 25 x 33 cm/ 9.8 x 13 inch, big enough for you to wipe garage tools, machine, car or serve as a mat
- Trimmable Fit for Tight Spaces: no tools required, and feature a flexible structure that allows you to easily tear or cut them into any shape; Ideal for lining narrow corners, oily toolboxes, automotive workbenches, or placing directly under leaky engines without fraying
- Multi Surface Protection: these dimpled oil pads are ideal for concrete garage, basement, workshop, kitchen, industrial estate, home and more, They are also suitable for tile, sealed floors, and metal workbenches, suitable for both oil and water and more; Let it absorb completely, and toss it away; A clean, time-saving solution for mechanics, DIY auto enthusiasts, and homeowners alike
Used motor oil: contain it, recover it and route it correctly
For a manageable workshop spill, stop the leak first. EPA recommends containing used oil with sorbents—such as a sorbent berm around the spill or sorbent spread over it—then recovering the oil. Keep recovered used oil separate for an appropriate recycling or disposal route; some garages accept it, and local agencies can explain household collection options. Acceptance and rules vary by location (EPA used-oil handler guidance).
Cleanup material matters too. EPA says sorbent material with free-flowing used oil must be managed under used-oil standards. Once free-flowing oil has been removed, the material may be managed as solid waste if it does not exhibit a hazardous-waste characteristic, subject to applicable rules. State requirements may be stricter, and EPA’s business guidance is not a complete statement of household or local disposal rules. Check with your local environmental or solid-waste agency rather than assuming oily pads or rags belong in ordinary trash.

- Brady's value priced oil absorbing sheets used for petroleum based spills and leaks
- Proven to effectively absorb liquids and repel water, and is effective in both industrial and environmental applications with oil only class
- Absorbs up to 20.5 gallons of liquid per bale, with perforation and dimples for reduced waste and added durability
- Single ply melt blown polypropylene to resist chemicals, repel water, and float on water
- Perforations allow you to quickly and easily select the perfect size absorbent for your application
For small spills, purpose-made oil absorbent pads may be useful when their label and the spill conditions are appropriate. EPA describes useful oil sorbents as oil-attracting and water-repellent; that property does not make a pad suitable for every liquid, surface or spill size (EPA: Sorbents).
If oil reaches soil, a drain or water
Do not hose or rinse oil into a storm drain, sewer or surface water. Stop any continuing source only if it is safe to do so, keep people away, and contact local emergency or environmental responders or the facility responsible for the spill. Give them the location, what the oil is if known, whether it is still flowing, and whether it has reached a drain or water.

- Heavy-Duty Absorption: 8-layer polypropylene pads soak up oils, coolants, solvents, water, and chemicals for all-purpose spill control.
- Durable & Lint-Free: Strong construction resists tearing and fraying, leaving surfaces clean without loose fibers or residue.
- Fast Spill Response: Dimpled surface accelerates wicking action, locking in leaks quickly to reduce slip hazards and cleanup time.
- Custom Fit Design: Perforations let you tear pads to size—ideal for small drips, large spills, or as disposable workbench covers.
- Safe & Organized Storage: Packaged in a dispenser box for fast access, keeping garages, shops, and factories prepared for emergencies.
Environmental response may involve booms, skimmers, sorbents, manual removal or other methods chosen for the spill and surrounding conditions. NOAA describes these as responder options, not a do-it-yourself procedure (NOAA: Response Tools and Techniques). Keep clear and follow the instructions of the responders or responsible authority.
