If your Shark FlexStyle has weak airflow, first switch it off, unplug it, and clean the filter at the bottom of the unit. For the HD400 series, Shark’s instructions call for brushing dust and debris from the filter with a new toothbrush—not rinsing it. Refit the cover until it clicks, and keep your hand clear of the inlet when using the styler.
How to clean the Shark FlexStyle filter
These steps come from the Shark HD400-series manual. The filter cover is at the bottom of the unit.

- Slide the filter cover off the bottom of the unit.
- Brush the filter with a new toothbrush. Gently remove dust and debris. The manual specifies brushing; it does not instruct users to wash the filter.
- Slide the cover back into place until it clicks.

Check for dust or a blocked inlet
Start with the lower filter and inlet. The HD400-series manual says that a change in airflow or air power, an airflow blockage, or visible buildup at the bottom inlet indicates the unit needs cleaning. Brush the filter using the steps above.

Keep your hand away from the filter cover while styling
Shark warns that covering the lower inlet with your hand can block airflow and reduce it. Adjust your grip so the filter cover and inlet remain unobstructed during operation.
If airflow stays weak after cleaning
The cited instructions do not give a complete diagnosis or repair procedure for weak airflow that persists after the filter is clean. Check the instructions for your exact model or contact Shark support for model-specific help. Do not assume that a styling attachment or a replacement filter will fix the problem.

The cleaning directions above are for the HD400 series, and Shark’s FAQ is specifically for regional HD400EU models. Check the model number on your unit and use its own manual if the cover or inlet looks different. The Shark FlexStyle product page provides product-family context.
