For ordinary sweat after wearing over-ear headphones, start by turning them off and gently wiping the pads with a clean, dry, soft cloth. Check the instructions for your exact model before using water, detergent, alcohol, or removing the cushions: cleaning rules vary by material and manufacturer. Keep moisture away from openings and drivers, and let any damp parts dry fully before wearing or storing the headphones.
Clean sweat from over-ear headphones in five steps
- Turn them off and disconnect them. Unplug the audio cable or charger, if applicable. Check the model’s manual for its pad material, removal instructions, and approved cleaning method before taking cushions off.
- Wipe fresh sweat promptly. Use a clean, dry, soft, lint-free cloth. Wipe gently rather than scrubbing; Sony recommends dry, soft tools for routine pad care, and Sennheiser advises wiping damp earpads with a clean, dry cloth. Sony’s headphone maintenance guidance and Sennheiser’s cleaning guidance describe these approaches.
- For visible dirt, use only a method approved for your model. If its maker permits a damp cloth, wring it out well and keep liquid away from seams, mesh, ports, and openings. Do not soak the assembled headphones or spray cleaner directly onto them.
- Air-dry before use or storage. Leave the pads exposed to air in a dry place. Do not put damp headphones in a closed case. If you removed the cushions, wait until they are completely dry before reinstalling them; follow any longer drying time specified by the maker.
- Replace worn or persistently soiled pads. If odor or staining remains, or the pads are peeling, torn, or flattened, check the manufacturer’s replacement parts and installation instructions for your exact model. Avoid sharp tools and do not touch exposed drivers.
Choose the method by headphone brand and model
There is no safe universal liquid cleaner for every over-ear cushion. Manufacturers differ on whether detergent, water, or disinfectant is suitable, and even a brand’s instructions may be specific to one product. Follow the manual for your exact model whenever it differs from general brand guidance.

AirPods Max: follow Apple’s measured cleaning process
Apple’s process below is specifically for AirPods Max, not other headphones. Its instructions, published 13 September 2024, call for mild detergent, separate wiping cloths, and at least a day of drying.

- Remove the cushions.
- Mix 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of liquid laundry detergent into 1 cup (250 ml) of water.
- Lightly wring out a lint-free cloth. Gently wipe each cushion and the headband for one minute each.
- Use a separate cloth slightly dampened with fresh water to wipe the cushions and headband.
- Dry them with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth, then lay them flat to dry for at least one day before reattaching the cushions.

What to avoid when cleaning headphone sweat
- Alcohol or solvents on cushions unless the exact model’s instructions permit them. Sony warns against solvents, including alcohol, on earpads. Apple’s permission for specified disinfectant wipes on some exterior surfaces does not extend to the AirPods Max cushions or knit mesh canopy.
- Soaking or spraying the assembled headphones. Liquids can reach drivers and other openings. Keep moisture away from ports, seams, and inner screens; a damp cloth should be well wrung out when the model’s instructions allow one.
- Scrubbing, prying, or improvised pad removal. Follow the model’s cushion-removal directions, and do not use sharp tools or touch exposed drivers.
- Putting damp headphones away. Let cushions dry fully in open air before wearing, reinstalling, or storing them.
When to replace the ear cushions
Cleaning may not restore pads that remain soiled or have developed odor, peeling, tears, or flattening. Sennheiser advises replacing soiled pads for hygiene. Match replacement cushions to the exact headphone model; fit and installation can differ. For the Sony WH-1000XM5, Sony provides model-specific replacement instructions and recommends an authorized service center if you do not want to replace them yourself. For other headphones, check the manufacturer’s manual and parts information before buying or removing pads.
