Clean suede approach shoes dry first: gently brush away loose dirt, then use a suede eraser on dry marks. For a stubborn stain, use a cleaner labeled for suede or nubuck sparingly and only where needed. Let the shoes air-dry away from heat, then brush the nap lightly. Check the shoe maker’s care instructions before using liquids or sprays, since approach shoes can combine different materials and finishes.
What to check before cleaning
Approach shoes are not all built alike. Suede panels may sit alongside other materials, coatings, membranes or adhesives, and the general suede-care guidance from ECCO, Sebago and Diemme is not specific to every approach-shoe model. Check the maker’s instructions for your shoe first, and keep suede cleaner off other surfaces unless its label says it is suitable for them.

Work on dry shoes, and remove laces if they get in the way. Avoid starting by soaking the shoe: excess water can affect the suede’s appearance, and the cited makers do not prescribe one universal wet-cleaning method.

How to clean suede approach shoes
- Brush off loose dirt. With the shoe dry, use a soft suede brush and gentle strokes. Follow the nap’s natural direction where possible; Sebago specifically recommends brushing that way. Avoid pressing hard or scrubbing aggressively. Sebago’s suede and nubuck care guide explains its brushing recommendation.
- Try an eraser on dry marks. Gently work a suede eraser over surface marks before reaching for liquid cleaner. ECCO and Sebago both include brushing or erasing in their suede-care advice. ECCO’s suede shoe guide describes its cleaning approach.
- Treat stubborn stains cautiously. If a mark remains, choose a cleaner explicitly labeled for suede or nubuck and follow its directions. Use as little as practical and target the affected area rather than wetting the whole shoe. Product directions differ: ECCO describes cleaner used with a damp cloth, while Diemme advises minimal liquid and targeted treatment. Do not assume either method is right for every shoe or cleaner. See Diemme’s suede care guide and the cleaner label.
- Air-dry completely. Let the shoe dry naturally away from radiators, direct heat and other heat sources. Do not apply protector or brush to revive the nap while the suede is still damp.
- Lift the nap after drying. Once fully dry, brush lightly to raise the fibers and even out the surface. If the suede is flattened, gentle brushing is the appropriate first step; avoid trying to restore it with polish or cream.
What to avoid
- Leather cream and polish: Sebago warns that these can flatten suede’s nap and change its texture.
- Hard scrubbing or soaking: Start with dry, gentle methods and use liquid only when needed. Follow the shoe maker’s directions because construction and materials vary.
- Heat drying: Air-dry naturally rather than placing suede near a heater or other direct heat source.
- Unverified sprays or cleaners: Use products intended for suede or nubuck, and confirm they are compatible with the shoe’s care instructions and any adjacent materials.
Should you apply a suede protector?
A protector spray intended for suede or nubuck is an optional preventive treatment, not a cleaning step. Apply it only to a dry shoe, and follow both the shoe maker’s guidance and the product label. Manufacturer guidance describes protection against wet weather or stains; it does not establish that a treated shoe becomes waterproof. ECCO and Sebago include protector products in their care advice.
