Clean open-ear earbuds using the care instructions for your exact model. Methods differ: Sony LinkBuds Open instructions allow a 99% water-based wipe on sound openings and surfaces, Shokz OpenFit 2 guidance calls for dry tools on mesh and charging contacts, and Bose Ultra Open guidance permits a water-only damp cloth on the earbuds. Keep liquid away from openings and contacts, use only gentle tools, and let the earbuds dry fully before charging.
Before you clean: check the model and its instructions
“Open-ear” describes how earbuds sit; it does not mean their mesh, microphones, charging contacts, or case can all be cleaned the same way. Identify the exact model and follow its manufacturer’s care guidance. In particular, do not assume that an earbud’s water resistance also applies to its charging case or means it is safe to charge while wet.

A safe cleaning routine
- Take the earbuds out of use. Keep them disconnected from charging while cleaning.
- Remove surface dirt gently. Use the dry, soft cloth or model-approved wipe. Do not soak a cloth or let liquid run into sound openings, microphone ports, or contacts.
- Clean mesh and openings only as directed. Use light pressure and move debris outward. Do not push dirt into the opening or use needles, sharp picks, or other improvised tools.
- Clean charging contacts with a dry tool. Use the dry cotton swab or soft cloth specified by the manufacturer. Keep moisture off the contacts and clear any liquid before charging.
- Let the earbuds dry at room temperature. Wait until they are thoroughly dry before returning them to the case or charging.
How the instructions differ by model
These manufacturer examples show why one cleaning recipe should not be applied to every open-ear earbud.

What to avoid
- Sharp objects or forceful scrubbing: they can damage mesh or internal parts, and can push debris farther into an opening.
- Unapproved liquids or chemicals: follow the model’s rules; the cited makers give different directions, and Sony and Bose warn against particular solvents or chemicals.
- Air blasts or vacuuming near microphone ports: Sony says not to use canned air, and Bose warns against blowing air into or vacuuming its microphone ports.
- Charging before the parts are dry: moisture can cause problems at the case or charging interface. Follow the device’s instructions and wait until it is thoroughly dry.
Tools you may need
A clean, soft cloth and cotton swabs cover tasks named in the manufacturer guidance, but the right choice depends on the model and component. Use a dry swab where the instructions specify one; do not treat a cotton swab as permission to wet a port or press into mesh.
